"tip" bucket at Brownwood

Has anyone ever heard of the entertainers looking for "tips". The solo guy at Brownwood tonight (Wed) mentioned to feel free to drop tips in his bucket. I've never heard of this before

TheDude 12-07-2016 07:41 PM

Next Uber is going to ask for tips... ugh.

Sorry.

Personally, if The Villages pays for the entertainment, then I wouldn't tip (and if I was The Villages, I would be upset and may never bring them back), but if they are freelancing, I may tip. Its like someone playing in the subway, if you like it, drop a dollar.

Tipping is a thing you give; no pressure, and if pressured, myself I would say 'Are you serious, Dude?'.

Yea, let me just jump in my Lexus and drive home to my golf course home. No sense dropping a buck in the tip box. Geez its Christmas...we are so lucky....lets try to help everybody out a little bit.

Yes I've seen it at BonifY entertainment I was surprised too

redwitch 12-08-2016 07:23 AM

It's unusual to hear of a tip jar in the squares, but why not. The performers get paid by the stores, not TV, although the Entertainment Department hires them. They usually get paid much lower here than when playing in other venues in Central Florida. It is, however, a steady gig. So, I'd say if the entertainment was good, you enjoyed yourself, you requested a song and it was played, tipping doesn't hurt. Tip if you want, don't if not. It's a no harm, no foul kind of thing.

BTW, I've always given money to a band when requesting a song.

Deseylou 12-08-2016 07:53 AM

It's not about not being able to afford a tip.
When does it stop?

outlaw 12-08-2016 08:56 AM

When I go to the town squares, I always take a wad of singles and "tip" people for just being themselves. I also tip people for not doing something bad. I feel good doing it.

Chi-Town 12-08-2016 09:06 AM

Saw Beautiful Bobby Blackmon and the B3 Band at LSL and requested Hey Joe, which is not a dance tune but a listening one. He played about a seven minute version. He had a tip jar which I contributed to happily.

Here's Hey Joe at Brownwood:

I think it makes no difference if they have a tip jar or not. Give if you have a reason to, don't if you feel you don't want to.
I think I will be putting a tip jar on my golf cart. Just incase someone going by wants to tip me. I will even say thank you.

Yes tipping has gone over the top for a while now. When you go to dinner and all the waiter does is deliver the food and drinks. They feel you should give them 20% tip .
That is 20% of the bill for what? I very rarely get good service in the villages, never mind that the quality of food is at best mediocre. You have to ask for a refill of your drink etc.

Yes I tip. But only based on the service.

Watched the YouTube link and that's a band I will have to keep an eye out for. I love me some Hendrix! Of course, you really don't want to listen to the lyrics of that particular number as it's misogynistic as can be...

Most of Bobby Blackmon's music is bluesy. Some B.B. King, Wilson Pickett, maybe a little Buddy Guy. Hey Joe gives him and the band a chance to show off their musical talent.

wait staff get paid a very low hourly wage. They depend on tips.

Sandtrap328 12-09-2016 02:36 PM

In The Villages, your drinks are around $2.50 and meals around $15. This is CHEAP if you come from any metro area. The server still makes a very small wage and depends on your tip.

Average income of Villagers is around $95,000 in retirement benefits and investments.

Give 20 percent! The servers do not control the quality of the food. If you don't like the quality, go somewhere else, but tip the servers!

I'd like to know as well......I'll save your chair whilst you dance for a tip, dance with your spouse...for a tip.....just let me know...LOL

$95,000 is the average......dang....

that means 60,000 Villages make over $95k.....that leaves me out....

Kathrynsews 12-11-2016 11:23 PM

Tip if you wish, or don't. I think we are all so lucky to have all this free entertainment, I don't begrudge anyone with a tip jar, and am happy to contribute. As far as waitstaff, they are paid peanuts and depend on tips for their livelihood. Consider it part of the price of dining out.

justjim 12-12-2016 12:25 AM

Don't blame the Server

Why do people want to take it out on the Server when the food is bad? Low wages, few benefits and complaints----20% gratuity is the least we can do when we go out for dinner and get reasonable service.

TheDude 12-12-2016 02:16 AM

This started with a tip bucket and snowballed.

No one is forcing anyone to tip, and if you are able to not have feelings, then don't tip. Some older people (I know I said that in TV website) grew up tipping 10%. I usually tip 30% on the food (I don't tip on the taxes). If bottles of wine are bought then it is a game day decision but I am not tipping 30 dollars on a 100 bottle of wine. I don't even know what is right in that case.

As to the basket, tip the guy then ask why in a kind way he feels the need, he may have an interesting story to tell.

fred53 12-12-2016 06:46 AM

It should never be about...

Exactly!

No one is being forced to tip (for anything) and if you're offended by just the mere presence of a tip jar/can...then I think other serious issues are at play IMHO.

I always add at least a 10% tip to my federal income taxes each year as a little "thank you" to the federal government. I feel it is patriotic.

Your kidding...right?

if your not.....just so you know....As a ex federal employee.....we are not allowed to accept tips of any kind......

daveczo 12-12-2016 11:55 AM

Excellent response Gerald, I agree.

Paperboy 12-12-2016 05:42 PM

What pumpkin wagon did U fall off of to get this $95K figure? This isn't Frisco or New York city! There must be quite a few billionaires living here to make this average so high. Maybe the CFO of Wells Fargo bank with his $125 MILLION golden parachute helped INFLATE this OUTLANDISH sum of $.

"tip" bucket at Brownwood

Asking for a tip is begging. The last time a begger asked me for money I took him into a diner on Delancy St. , gave the owner 20 bucks and told him to give this guy whatever he wanted until the 20 bucks was spent. That was 40 years ago. I felt he needed the food more then the money. As a rule, I don't tip.

Perhaps residents tend to exaggerate their income?

xcaligirl 12-13-2016 09:31 PM

It just never stops. I tip a lot of people during the year but it seems like pressure during the holidays! I'm so stirred of Publix asking for donations every week for a different cause!

Nucky 12-13-2016 10:08 PM

I like to tip someone who you can just tell is lumped up. It's not easy for a lot of people. There are a whole lot of rough stories out there. It does upset me when I see people running a scam collecting for months at the same traffic lite and resting in the parking lot in a beautiful car with shiny rims. Since I go to the Walmart on 441 occasionally in my car because I'm trying to be a team player...(golf cart path violation..ooh) these are the people that send me into orbit. People who work deserve to be tipped but things are different here, a man named Javier busted his butt loading our car with heavy stuff at Lowes because I can't lift these items and I tried to tip him and he turned it down and got serious about it. I felt very bad but I backed off. It's the Holidays, if you can do it let er rip!
