Active Shooter in the Villages? Now Contained. No Threat.

Has anyone heard this? There was a blurb in an email version of the other on line newspaper reporting an active shooter at the Villages VA clinic and the FBI called in. Clicking the link on the internet and in the email do not work.

Just got it to work:

The FBI has been called in to investigate an “active shooter” incident which took place this morning at the VA Outpatient Clinic in The Villages.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office was summoned about mid-morning to the clinic at 8900 SE 165th Lane.

Preliminary information indicates that this incident is contained and there is no immediate threat to the public. Officials are asking the public to avoid this area at this time to prevent additional traffic and congestion.

An employee reported that doctors and staff have been evacuated from the facility.

No one has been injured.

Multiple agencies were on scene, including the Marion County Fire Rescue HAZMAT unit.

Here's more:
According to one witness, a patient allegedly walked into the clinic early Tuesday morning with a gun with the intent on killing his doctor.

A single shot was fired according to the witness, however, the shooter missed and was taken down.

Occupants in the building were evacuated as Marion County deputies and SWAT cleared the scene.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the shooter is in custody and the situation is has been contained.

The FBI has assumed control of the investigation and deputies are assisting agents during the investigation.

Officials are urging all residents to avoid the area to prevent any further traffic congestion.

This is a breaking news story and officials are still on scene. More information will be provided as soon as it is released. Check back here for updates soon.

I must have missed the part where it said "mental health patient".

It was still on "lock down" at 2 pm.

I worked at a VA hospital and this doesn't surprise me. Some of the patients get really mad when the doctor doesn't give them what they want (usually pain pills).

John_W 12-13-2016 06:09 PM

It must of been my doctor. I told him I was allergic to statins, what else can I take. He said, take the supplement red yeast rice, which I did for a month until I got a reaction. When I checked it out, RYR is a blend of 5 statins. I know it's not a joking matter, but neither is doctors who don't know what they're doing. My first doctor at Mulberry VA said, why are you still taking Plavix 5 years after getting a stent, he said after 18 months you can stop. Three weeks later I had chest pains, after a quick trip to the VA Hospital in Gainesville we learned there are two kinds of stents, chemical and metal. He was correct for metal stents, however mine was a chemical stent which requires Plavix for life.

I have learned a long time ago to be my own advocate. If I don't watch out for myself no one will.

I read this in the online newspaper and I took it more as a cry for help than anything else. I believe I have read that depression is more prevalent at this time of the year than any other. His personal life seems to have been shot and I am thinking he was at the end of his rope.

Looks like someone angry because of loss of control over his life. Not so much mentally ill just full of rage. He was dealing with a recent divorce and the loss of his beloved cat of 20 years. Pets sure have a very calming effect for many. Wish this guy would have just adopted a pet rather than doing something stupid and very criminal like this.

Local Section Article by Leah Schwarting about VA Incident.

There's a detailed article about this matter at the VA with the active shooter in The Villages Daily Sun 12/14/2016 by Leah Schwarting on page C1 and C13. The VA staff responded very well in this situation due to training and keeping their composure.

We need a law that prevents people with mental illness from having guns.

Oh wait! We already have that law. Once again it is demonstrated that laws don't prevent crimes.

In this case, by the way, the guy never actually fired a shot at anyone. He pointed a rifle at his therapist and told him he wanted him to listen to him. A struggle ensued and the gun accidentally discharged.

He was armed to the teeth and may have had plans to do a mass shooting, but we won't know that until the investigation is completed.

I wonder what was so important that the therapist might have been ignoring? Sounds like another failure of the VA Health System. It's time that we dismantled the VA Health System and just give our veterans Medicare and a free supplemental plan just like those of us over 65.

We do need more education about mental illness and the like. He really does not look mentally ill to me. Which is the same with many of these people who use violence or the threat of violence to express their rage about something or other.

It certainly looks like he planned something more from the article in The Villages Daily Sun today. They stopped him though.

The mentally ill are usually the victims of crimes and not its perpetrators. Study Shows Mentally Ill More Likely to Be Victims, Not Perpetrators, of Violence | NC State News | NC State University

Given that he just went thru a divorce it could just as easily been a denial of service connected benefits because the therapist wouldn't write what he wanted in the records. To automatically blame the VA Health System without the facts is again insulting to people that worked there and saw all sides of the problems and how often people try to manipulate the system.

We probably will never hear all the facts unless we are on this man's jury and even then they will be spotlighted in certain ways by the lawyers.

:boom: My thoughts on this fella are truly mixed and I wish him the best care he can get! However, my rant is how in the "hell!" did he get inside and to the center of the building, armed to the teeth and no one slowed him down!!?? Normally, there are two to three volunteer greeters at the main entrance plus the VA Police office is right there on the right as you enter!! Looks as though a lot of people were not paying attention! This could have been a major situation with multiple fatalities! VA Police, this is on you! Get out of your office and watch what happens at the front door! I do think replacing the ones on duty at the time and more training is in store for the volunteers!!! Got lucky this time!!!

So you're putting most of this on the unarmed volunteers? Seriously? And as many times as I've been to the VA with my dad, I don't recall seeing any officers. It would be the same as if someone had walked into the hospital. Would you want the nice ladies at the front door to intervene with an armed person?

Yep you need to really be aware of some medical tricks now.
1. At one clinic, I told them that Cipro was very bad for me, put it in your computer, have it on record, no Cipro, an Antibiotic. OK the PA then specified Cipro, the Pharmacist caught it, on the paperwork, in bold print, Cipro is not recommended for some patients with an allergy to it.
2. At another clinic the doctor stood us up twice, not once, twice. Then his PA tried to convince us we did not need the doctor, wow. Then the PA started ordering a batch of tests,,,,,,,, a big batch.
Be careful, as others have said, better be careful and be aware. Now, if we go into a clinic, first Question is?
Is the Doctor here and present to see me? IF not, then leave.
Really strange what is going on in Medical.

No photo1902! I am putting this on the folks that are responsible for security at this clinic! Whether it be greeters that can plainly see something suspicious or the VA Police, whose office is directly on the right as you walk in the front door!! You're right, maybe you have not seen any the times you were there because they were out glad handing around the building instead of paying attention to what and who comes in the front door! I suspect their office is located at the front door so they can monitor what and or who is passing through! I go to this clinic on many occasions and only ask that these folks do their jobs and keep it safe for all! If you want to twist my statement to suit yourself, feel free!!!

Most of us go to our own chosen Primary Care Physician.

Where do you go to a "Clinic"?
