Lung Cancer

Good Afternoon....I've just be diagnosed with very early lung cancer that is only in my left nobe...Just wondering if anyone out there has been through this while in the Villages and what specialists they have used. Thanks

KathieI 06-12-2009 03:04 PM

Sue, I'm very sorry to hear that you have this illness and I do know there have been other members who have had this problem. Perhaps you could search it on the above link and find out the doctors that were used. Good luck to you and we'll keep you in our prayers. Let us know how you are doing..

suebanj 07-12-2009 02:18 PM

Thank you for your reply Kathie...I ended up having surgery and my upper left lode of my lung removed. Fortunately, the cancer was caught early and looks as if no more treatment will be needed....I have to be grateful for all the prayers and thoughts from my friends.

JeanneBeannie 07-12-2009 03:23 PM

Thank goodness.....

suebanj:

My thoughts are with you, always.

My theory is that a positive outlook cannot be beaten, so ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE BRIGHT SIDE!

And, remember that you are always welcome at my favorite support groups:

The Airheads, a group helping those who deal with day-in-day-out breathing problems, regardless of how those problems began. Second & Fourth Tuesdays at 10:00am, Classroom 1, Second floor, The Villages Clinic on the east side of Highway 41/27, across from the Sharon Morse Medical Building.

And, the Airheads COPD and Breathing exercise classes, where we learn how to best cope with breathing difficulties, be they caused by long-term smoking or other afflictions. First & Third Fridays at 10:00am, Classroom 3, same location as above.

VP, The Airheads

Sue, I'm so glad you let us know how your doing. I have often thought about you and were hoping that you were doing well. It sounds like your surgery was very successful and for that, we are grateful. Good Luck and please let us know if there is anything that you need or we can help you with. And I agree with SW, the positive outlook will help heal more than anything. God Bless You and stay well.

Just so you know - another one of your neighbors sends his very best to you. May God bless and give you renewed health.

joannej 07-12-2009 09:41 PM

I am very happy for you that you will not have to face any more surgery. I am sending you positive thoughts and prayers too. Just curious.....How was the cancer detected? Did you have a cough?

Muncle 07-12-2009 10:58 PM

Obviously, you know the critical point is to get a competent oncologist with whom you build up a rapport. I think your GP is the best person to make that recommendation since he/she knows you and your situation better than others. Mine sent me to Dr. Iyengar at Lake County Oncology & Hematology in the Sharon Morse Bldg. She is great and I couldn't be happier with her. For my MANY radiation treatments, I went to the Robert Boissoneault Oncology Institute and my treatment was supervised by Dr. Mabanta. They were absolutely wonderful. Like the Morse Bldg, this place is directly next to the hospital and golf cart accessible.

I don't think you could do wrong with this combo. Good luck.

Muncle.

I have forwarded this post to my next door neighbor and dear friend Ruth who is a snowbird and currently in Chicago. Her breast cancer recently returned in the form of lung cancer and she is receiving once a week chemo treatments in Chicago and she wondered about the oncology treatment centers nearby in TV. Her oncologist knows about Motts in Tampa and the University of Gainesville oncology center but I am glad to know about a treatment center nearby. We are hoping that she can return for the winter and continue her treatments in The Villages.

I wish BOTH of you continued health and intensely care and hope that you are doing well. I hate cancer, and I hope and pray to live long enough to see even more breakthroughs against this awful disease. I am GLAD that stem cell research can continue without any conflict now that they can clone cells. That will be the biggest difference and ultimately trigger the information for treatment of most cancers I firmly believe. Here is a big hug from someone who has been there kinda. Each kind of cancer is different I know. I had breast cancer and so did my daughter. My port was removed last December.

Thank you all for your posts..People are wondering how I found out about the lung cancer... Well, I was a smoker but really had no other symptoms. Play alot of pickleball and got out of breath as anyone else who plays in 85 degree weather!!! Just went to see my dr., Dr. Angel Tafur for an annual physical..When he heard that I was still smoking he had me go for a chest x-ray...that's where the cancer was spotted.. I thank Dr. Tafur so much for having me have that chest x-ray. I know a few of my friends who are smokers that have never had an x-ray on their chest....I'm just one of the lucky ones who caught the cancer very early and all other tests show that the cancer was contained and has not spread anywhere:pepper2: I'll talk more with my surgeons this Thursday but it appears that no other treatment will be needed...This was a tough way to quit smoking but as of today I have been a non-smoker for 26 days...YEAH!!!

Thinking of You

Sue,

You're in ALL our thoughts. Your TOTV family.http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/b...th_Teddy11.jpg

Shirleevee 07-13-2009 02:37 PM

Special prayers are being sent your way. God Bless!

Whalen 07-13-2009 08:56 PM

Prayers and good thoughts heading your way.
They work!

As a former smoker I still make sure I have a chest exray with my annual physical. My doctor always insisted on it.

To all of you smokers & former smokers, take a morning, schedule an exray,
it may save your life.

suebanj 07-14-2009 08:41 AM

Thanks for all your good thoughts and prayers..They do mean alot to me...

And, as others have said, please if you are or were a smoker, get a chest x-ray...You probably don't have anything, but as you can see from me, you never know!!

Enjoy today!!!!

Kalwinmack 07-24-2009 10:29 AM

I am also sending prayers. God may give you enough Strength and ability to fight against this critical time.

suebanj 07-24-2009 11:08 AM

Hi Everyone...Just an update....I went to see the oncologist this week...Of course, they never really review all your reports until after you see them atleast once!! Anyway, reviewing everything while I was there, he said it appears that I was one very lucky woman and that it looks like everything was taken out with the surgery. He does want me to see a radiation oncologist next week to just go over everything and see if he agrees or would suggest a few rounds of radiation to be "sure" they got all the cancer. My medical oncologist is also putting my file with a panel for review...Guess everyone needs to cover their a-----!!!! Which is fine with me!
Thanks again to all for your prayers...now I'm concentrating on getting my stamina back!!

Sue, this is excellent news. I am so happy for you and will continue to keep you in my thoughts. Getting your stamina back after lung surgery is very hard but just take it day by day. In 1984 my dad had lung surgery (the docs thought he had cancer but thankfully he didn't) he was 68 then and it was very hard for him to get back his strength but being the determined man he is, he would just go inch by inch and returned to playing golf in a short time. He just turned 93 yesterday. Its a very difficult surgery, one that takes a lot out of you, and don't be too hard on yourself. Take care and good luck, keep us posted.

suebanj 07-24-2009 03:48 PM

Thanks Kathie...Yes, it will take time and I just need to be patient! The golf course and pickleball courts will have to do without me a little while longer!!
Have a great evening and weekend!

lung cancer

I am so happy that you are doing well. I agree that a positive attitud is essentle. I was diagnosed with lung cancer almost 8 years ago and the local hospital gave me one year and I'm still here after wonderful care at Mass General Hospital in Boston. Mine was advanced and I had radiation and chemo before undergoing surgery to remove the lobe and four ribs that were also affected and then another round of chemo. It returned and I was on a clinical trial for 6 months which was two weeks (one day per week) on chemo and one week off and the cancer cells were killed. It returned again and that time I had the lobe remove in my other lung and no treatments needed. I then was diagnosed with small nodules in both lungs and had another 6 months of chemo and have now been cancer free for over three years. I can credit Mass General for great care and my family and friends for so much support and the most important person in my life was my husband who took over just about every house chore and was the best caretaker. I think that my attitude that I wasn't going to let this damn thing get me has helped me give it a good fight and so far I am winning. Keep your chin up and a sense of humor and remember that your friends and family are there for you. Good luck and my prayers are with you.
