Getting German Shephard to TV from MI
 

We need to find a way to transport our gentle German Shephard to TV. We will travel from Michigan in the fall and need info. I read the posts about cats (with a few comments at the end about small dogs) but our dog weighs almost 100 pounds. She only travels to the vet or my sisters so this will be a new and maybe painful experience for all of us.

I am also wondering if anyone ever sent their dog by plane - again not a little dog but a big one. We still haven't decided if we will fly or drive. Thanks. Karen

We have found that our dogs travel by car so well that we dont even know they are in the back of the van. Does your dog get car sick? If not, why not try the drive. Almost every dog I have had has traveled just great by car, They just sort of get lulled into a sleepy stuper after a while.

I am very reluctant to ship a dog by plane. I would think that it would be very tramatic for them. I have been on planes that had to land suddenly or not take off on schedule and the poor dog is on that plane for many extra hours in a crate. It has to be a terrifying experience for them.

There are many "dog friendly" motels along the way to Florida. When you stop for gas, the dog can have a potty break. It has always been extremely easy for us to travel this way. Most dogs are excellent travelers.

If your dog gets anxiety in the car, ask your vet for a mild tranqualizer.Good luck!

Canwego, please do not ship your dog by air. Too many horror stories and a very traumatic experience for them. Better to drive since that gives you control over how well your dog travels. We have always taken our pets safety into consideration when travelling and it also prompts us to take pit stops along the way and stretch. Good Luck and Welcome.......

I don't think you need to worry about traveling by car with your dog. We brought our Black Lab down from Illinois....no problem at all. As Nonie said...potty breaks when you get gas and the dogs will find a comfortable spot to lay in your car. Good luck.

I agree; do not ship your dog on a plane. They put them in dog kennel crates and put them in the plane's cargo holds. We have a 100 lb yellow lab who has made the 900 mile trip (both ways) from Cincinnati about 5 to 6 times a year since July 2004. You just have to make extra bathroom breaks and a little exercise time. As a matter of fact we brought our home for our retirement; but also so we could vacation with our dog.

Yes there is. Check your deed restrictions. But if you bring a dog to TV the restriction is waived. The same as is the number pets in a household is waived.

We travel with our dogs alot. I suggest if you can to try to take your dog for a ride as often as you can before the move to get him use to being in the car.
I use a harness on my dogs when we travel so that when we make pit stops I have better control over them. It is better than just a leash around the neck.
I also carry water in the car in the event we get stuck in traffic. You can get a sedative from your vet or just use benadry. Most dogs settle right down once you get going and sleep.

Getting dog to TV
 

We travel with our 56 pound Aussie all the time. We have taken him to NC many times, it's about a 10 hr trip with stops included (actual drive time about 8 1/2 hrs). We just plam on stopping about 3 or 4 times for lunch or short breaks. The dog does very well, he sleeps most of the way.

Another vote for doggie-in-the-car. My husband and I made the drive between NY and Miami several times with 2 large dogs and 2 kids. Believe me, dogs are easier to travel with than kids. Of course our dogs were used to car rides and that might make a difference. We always had water and a water bowl for them, but they didn't get food until the end of the day. They just slept in the back of the station wagon.
Please don't put them on a plane.

You've probably all read about the new airline for animals only (no owners allowed). The airline doesn't fly to all cities ... yet. Animals fly in the cabin, with constant supervision.

Apparently it is fully booked for the next two months.
