Palm Trees
Being new to palm trees. Can anyone give me advice about why the palm trees look yellow? I have fertilized them but they don't seem to green up. Is this normal for this time of year??

The roots go some distance from the tree, so don't just fertilize near the trunk |
Assume you are watering them regularly?

You could try contacting the master gardener and ask your questions. We have 4 palms, 2 Sylvester's and 2 canary. All have been fertilized and regularly watered. The 2 Sylvester's are green, especially when compared to the neighbors, the 2 canary's have very slight yellowing. I get specific palm fertilizer from One Site in Leesburg, 50 pound bag, $50, but I understand there is a firm that delivers for the same price.

Palm trees
The bottom branches turn yellow and then start dying off. These are the branches that get cut off. My landscaper said to look inside the tree, it should be green. The top of the tree with the new growth should also be green. According to my landscaper, Palm trees should be fertilized twice a year. Once in the spring after the potential for frost is gone, sometime after March 15 and 6 months later. If your a snowbird whenever you get back after September 15. If your concerned about you tree take some pictures to the big nursery on 301, just nothing of 466. They are very helpful and sell a good quality palm fertilizer.

Also, palms need Boron. Check the label of your fertilizer to make sure that it is included. |
Epsom salt used only as a supplement to Palm fertilizer ( boron essential )

They need magnesium. Google yellowing palm trees. I use epsom salt and water it in around the tree.

Palm trees also need manganese. A deficiency can also cause yellowing leaves.

It's all dependent upon exactly what fertilizers you do use. Too much is as destructive as not enough. |
Master gardners RECOMMEND using Lesco 8-2-12 ---it is a slow release fertilizer & pricy @ $50.00 per bag BUT is worth it.
NEVER use epsom salt. |

The most important item that can when lacking will cause yellowing... is water.
2nd most important.. is pH. Average in TV is 7.2 and will cause a deficiency in nutrient uptake, even if you are fertilizing.. the palms cannot use the fertilizer if the pH is too far from the target for the species you have. |
