Solicitors coming to the door

My understanding is that solicitors are not allowed unless they have permission/approval. Does this rule extend to religious oriented groups going door-to-door and distributing their material?

upstate 04-01-2017 10:33 AM

Just had them show up about twenty minutes ago at our door in Pennecamp, we were thinking the same thing.

vintageogauge 04-01-2017 10:51 AM

I put a small "no soliciting" sign beside my front door. It works very well, have had only one or two people ring the bell in over 3 years. The sign is small enough not to agitate the neighbors or association.

njbchbum 04-01-2017 11:11 AM

Was personally told by Community Watch that religious folk are exempt from the solicitation restrictions because they are not selling something for cash money.

Wouldn't surprise me, just like charities are exempt from the "do not call" registry

If you really want to get rid of them, try this (especially today): When they approach, exclaim loudly "Praise the Lord" "Tonight is the first moon of the 7th Anunaki rectification, and our lord Satan promised to deliver the human sacrifices. Welcome, please step inside" For more dramatic effect, have a 10 inch dagger in your hand. You won't see them again.:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

fred53 04-01-2017 11:42 AM

No solicitation allowed! Period. Religious groups do NOT have permission!

Gpsma 04-01-2017 11:42 AM

Depending on your age and physical appearance, that could either scare them away or encourage them. Bad idea.:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

Nucky 04-01-2017 11:48 AM

I'm surprised that there is not a "Do Not Knock" law like we had in in N.J. We just registered with our town to keep ALL people from knocking and also to keep them from throwing those garbage informational flyers at the end of the driveway. I am happy for the people spreading the word about whatever changed their life but don't come on my property to tell me about it please.

I wonder if you did something along the lines of Seinfeld with The Phone Call and required the knockers address before you speak to them. Would they give it up?

You don't have to answer the door.
It may be annoying, but are we really so busy we don't have time to politely say that we're not interested?

600th Photo Sq 04-01-2017 12:44 PM

Look this is not a gated community, all roads in The Villages are public with the exception of Courtyard Villas, Courtyard Villa roads are private except with one big exception they have " Public Access ".

Now the solicitation in this case Jehovah Witness have been going around knocking on doors, I had a visit 2 days ago, they have a duty to do this now and then. I am not making excuses for them but to me this is not a big deal.

Be polite, take the pamphlet and just say thank you. Just shrug your shoulders, chances are you will never see them again...plus honestly when is the last time someone did any solicitation.

No fair!!

I never get door-to-door solicitors and am therefore...missing out on all of the fun. :D

Jima64 04-01-2017 01:53 PM

Off brand small church group knocked on my door about 6 years ago on Christmas morning, about 10:30 am. Last time that ever happened. They used to drive up in a caravan of vehicles and park everywhere.

graciegirl 04-01-2017 01:58 PM

They don't bother me, they never have. Much rather have them knocking on my front door than nasty folks breaking in my sliders for nefarious reasons. No matter that you are not interested they think they are sharing something good with you.

I say thank you, take the literature, smile and don't say another thing...Well, maybe...have a nice day and then I politely close the door.

They mean well.

Well...... most of the time.

When living in upstate NY many years ago, I once had a group of 5 or 6 people that would not leave my property after I said no thanks and closed the door. They rang the bell again and I had to get my phone and start calling the police before they finally got the message and left.

Rapscallion St Croix 04-01-2017 03:40 PM

I had some young foks knock on my door back home wanting to talk about my salvation. I told them I would listen to anything they had to say if they could get my toilet unclogged. They apparently decided I wasn't worth saving.

GOLOW, I don't think what you heard was correct. If the same solicitors keep coming back & become a nuisance the TV said they would take care of it. Solicitors have permission to be in TV or they wouldn't be here. I've had a lot of yard care people stop but they'll give me their business card & I've never seen them again. As far as religious groups, I never had one stop but I have got their fliers on my door. Actually I've had yard services stop & give me some tips on yard care.

Solisitors

Have been finding business cards from Comcast in my doorbell slot, about once a week.

slamtennis 04-03-2017 11:33 AM

Good Lord, when you first move in, there must be at least a dozen salespeople ringing your doorbell. I wish I had thought some of these tips :icon_wink:

It was in the paper some time ago. Right away, we started having a lot of door to door religious groups showing up in our neighborhood, but none lately. I am almost more offended by the religious groups than I am by door to door sales people.

jflynn1 04-03-2017 03:52 PM

I believe all you have to do is ask them to leave.

pauld315 04-03-2017 07:21 PM

I would be surprised if there really is any rule about any solicitors. Going back to a thread in 2008 a past owner of this forum (Talk Host) answered a similar thread with this and it makes sense to me.

"The Villages is not a political subdivision or governmental entity. It cannot make or enforce ordinances. It encompasses three counties, so the laws would vary in each."

HoosierPa 04-03-2017 07:55 PM

Install a RING doorbell and answer every knock or doorbell with your smartphone regardless of whether you are home or away.

I remember a couple of years ago when a similar discussion popped up on TOTV. One poster replied that he always answered the door while holding his pistol behind his back - just in case.

I sure would hate going through life that paranoid.

Back to topic. If a religious group knocks on your door, why come up with hare brained ideas like acting crazy, threatening to call police, etc? Is that how your parents raised you or what you taught your children? Just take their pamphlet, say you already are a Christian, Jew, or whatever- thank them and politely close the door.

If I'm not mistaken, if they cross the threshold, uninvited, you have a right to shot them no questions asked.

In fact if you remain on your own property, you can have the gun in plain sight. That would probably make them leave and not come back.

That does not sound right. Maybe if they were breaking into your house with a knife in hand. Yes. But just someone at your door who puts themselves over your threshold I doubt if you could shoot them unless they were choking you. And even then if you were 100 lbs heavier than that person.

graciegirl 04-04-2017 12:46 PM

Good grief! These are church ladies and gentlemen that dress like we did in the seventies. They are trying to save your souls. OR

They are landscapers who want to cut your grass.

Maybe they are bad people who want to maim and harm you but I am almost eighty and that has never been the case of folks coming to my door.

Most of us don't answer the door if what we see is a little odd.

Rapscallion St Croix 04-04-2017 01:20 PM

I am grateful the the apex solicitors, the Alphas, who say, "Trick or Treat", don't operate here.

Jim, do you have Jehovah Witnesses barge into your house? No, I don't think so.

Maybe having your gun in plain view is legal but I hope you would not be pointing your gun (brandishing) at the person in your yard. That is assault with a deadly weapon and you will end up in handcuffs.

Stick to your excellent music, please.
