Music on the Squares
I was listening to some old classics today (70's& 80's) and it got me thinking.... There are some songs that groups on the squares never play. Are the play lists approved by The Villages Entertainment?

If Petrina ever gets back to playing the squares, go see her. In the meantime it seems she fills her schedule with village club shows and golf country clubs and rec center performances. She's a great one woman show with a band in the box backup. When I first started seeing her about six years ago, I had no idea who Adell was but Petrina was singing her hits. She was the first and probably the only act to perform Lady Gaga. I'm a classic rock guy who owned over 4,000 albums before moving here, but it was refreshing to hear something new once in awhile and the way Petrina presents herself you'll be entertained. She has a tremendous memory. Once she put a pair of her flashing glasses on my face, she sells them at her shows, then I hadn't been able to catch her act for a year and a half, and she saw me at a show and came up and asked, where are your glasses? She gets out and performs and mingles with the crowd during her show, she doesn't just stay on the stage. See the link above and you'll get an idea. She was for a while performing regular at the Waterfront Hotel and Bonifay Country Club. If you've see 'Just Mike' at City Fire, she is a female version of something like that. |

To answer your question about the Entertainment Dept approving the playlist, no, they do not have any input on that. I performed with 3 For the Road for a couple years and we often played the Squares (as they still do, usually as 3 For the Road Plus 1 after adding a drummer) and there was no discussion of playlist. In fact, they are at Lake Sumter square tonite. Speak to one of the guys between sets and let them know what you would like to hear. They enjoy doing songs from different eras.

the 50s and 60s music isn't interesting to me, I wish more 70s on up music would be played
|
In thirty years bands will be playing hits from the 80s and 90s. Until then I am very happy with songs from the 50s and 60s. OK, maybe a few from the 70s.

We really like Mark Seymour and also his band, Second Slice.
He and they play a nice mix and do lot of the new popular songs. |

Supposedly the first time in The Villages @ Spanish Springs tonight was a group called American Martians. Well they are now my Favorite Martians. They were on the money and mixed it up well. They started playing Led Zeppelin song that nobody liked and they transitioned into something that got everyone moving again. Fantastic. 8 to 10 song Beatles tribute at the end, almost as good as the Beatlemaniacs if they practice for another couple of years. Did I say we were impressed?

I thought Johnny Wild and The Delights were really good. A nice twist on older songs.

I thought the group were excellent musicians and liked the song mix. Could have used less of the crowd interactive part of the performance. Agree they may be more appealing to a bit younger crowd and bet they would be a bigger hit at Brownwood. Returning to Spanish Springs May 1st, would encourage all to give them a look see. Hope they become regulars at the squares.

Music on the Square
If you want variety and a change of pace tonight at
Lake Sumter is Blue Stone Circle . . . they'll play anything from Charlie Daniels to Def Leppard . . .6 members they all sing and sing well. And now and then do a great Fiddle act, we enjoy them. |

For some more insight, this band performed under the name "Mulch, Sweat and Shears" for more than a decade at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. They were themed as a group of landscapers, and would drive out into the park in a truck and perform. That's where a lot of the crowd interaction in their show comes from. And the Disney connection is also why they are top-notch musicians. Their run at the park ended last year. I agree, the vocal mix was not good, hopefully the sound tech works on that for next time. I'd encourage everyone to go out and see them as well. |
We have lived here for 22 years and in the beginning we were thrilled to hear 50's & 60's music because we were 50 & 56 which was geared more to us during our teenage years. Music has always seemed to be stuck in a rut here, which is why we stopped going to the squares. Although we are now in our 70's, we like 70's, 80's and 90's music. I even like some of the hits from more recent times. Entertainment needs to keep up!

I grew up listening to 70's and 80's music. Would love to listen to more of that era -- Not too interested in listening to the same 'old' songs. And throw in some current country music!

Everyone knows that rock and roll achieved perfection in 1974. It's a scientific fact.

Petrina just performed for the Hadley social club and she was fantastic !!! Great music and a wonderful performer. I agree we need more 70's and 80's music. One of our clubs was going to have a 50's hop for their meeting and could not sell tickets. Then they changed it to 60's 70's and 80's and people starting buying tickets.
