When driving your golf cart, how often are you passed?
I have been passed a few times in the past year and passed someone a couple, three times.
How about you? I suppose it depends on how much you drive it and what time of the year it is. When I was driving much more in my cart than I do now...it was still rare to pass or be passed. Interested in other's experiences on this... |
I pass often, electric power rules.
|
I asked my husband and he said that he (in the past year) has passed several people and several people have passed him. He plays golf four times a week and frequently will drive from 466 where we live to below 466A to play.
In my opinion, my husband is a good driver in cart or car. |
I just get passed. The older I get the slower I go.... time just goes faster
|
I have checked and double checked my carts speed. And it will go 19.8 uphill and 20.7 downhill with only one person on board. So just a bit more than legal down hill. I do have a speedometer installed and it matches the checked mph at those sheriff speed signs every time.
There are many carts out there who drive or chose to drive at about 17. Not sure if they realize they are going below the legal limit, but I will pass them. And have even been yelled at by a few when you pass. They must not realize they are going slow. I have also been going the speed limit and have had carts zoom past at what had to be over 25 mph. So I would guess in the past year I have passed 3 or 4 and have been passed by 3 or 4. And probably about the same for several past years. I do use the cart a lot and go just about every where possible in it. |
If you're talking about being passed by other golf carts doing over 20 mph ,yeah, too many times to count by so many different carts on Morse, San Marino, Enrique, Madero, Palo Alto and countless side streets I can't keep track. I've been in my car on Enrique doing 25 and been passed by golf carts doing well over 25 and they weren't street legal carts.

When I am driving my cart which has a top speed of 22 MPH on a flat surface, I am passed often but I usually catch up at the next stop sign or tunnel. |
Being passed by golf carts
Hi Gracie,
I get passed pretty much on a daily basis (I love just driving around in the cart). I don't go slow, but I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of the passing carts were doing a tad bit more than 19.8 miles. |
The newer golf cart has a governor on it which does not allow me to get it past 20 or so. I get passed often by other carts but only pass the carts going quite slow.
Old golf cart had the governor adjusted up by the maintenance people so it would go up to about 25 mph but I still had carts passing me going much faster. |
My Cart is set by the shop at the legal limit period. If I need to get somewhere faster I take the car. Yes I get passed everyday I drive the cart by more then one believe me. What's your hurry ?
|
I drive every day except Sunday on Morse, north of 466, to pick up mail. It's about 3/4 mile, and I get passed on average every other day. I also get tailgated nearly every day, which is far more aggravating to me than getting passed. My electric cart tops out at a GPS-verified 19.5 MPH.
|
We get passed on a daily basis. Our cart is from The Villages carts so I don't know how fast it is but it seems fast enough.
Most of the time I have to hold hubby back from giving them the finger.......luckily he always does but waits till there too far away to see or even care, but it makes him feel better. Frankly, I could care less, living in South Florida it is a multiple daily occurance and I am so over it. if it makes men feel better....and it is 100% men who have done this to me, if it gives them a little more umph in there ego.. and gives them a cheap thrill.....then by all means....go ahead pass me....I could care less.... I just think to my self, my insurance bills are sooooo...low, I wonder what the speeder is paying..:police: |

We were passed by 3 carts just yesterday and none of which had street legal plates. We have a speedometer and do 20 and 20.7 downhill before governor kicks in. We are passed daily but most times you catch them either at a light or a stop sign. What's the rush? Wish the sheriff would nab some of these people. They are going to cause an accident.

It has gotten out of hand

Originally, golf carts were designed to do 15 mph. They only have brakes on the rear wheels. Like your old Schwinn bike with brakes on the rear wheel only, when you hit the brakes hard the weight moves forward and it easily skids. Golf carts are also top heavy. We've all seen them with four people each well over 200 lbs in them. Folks that is 900 lbs almost equal to the empty weight of the car, well above the center of gravity. The golf cart paths are clearly not designed for these speeds. ARE WE, ARE YOU, IN SUCH A RUSH TO RELAX???????? |

Oh, and we have been passed by men, women, and kids. It certainly hasn't only been men. |
What few times I pass someone I always smile and wave. When I get passed, no one ever even acknowledges that I"m there. Strange
|
I find that I probably get passed more than I pass other carts. Most of the time it seems that the passing occurred on a street rather than on a MMP. The thing that really frost me is when on the MMP that runs by Freedom Point, I am stopped at a stop sign and someone blows around me!
|
I get passed pretty often. My cart is fast and I could outrun most of the passers but it really doesn't usually bother me when they pass. The two exceptions that have drawn curses from my lips were last year when a guy passed me in the tunnel from Laurel Manor to Saddlebrook and the other night when a fellow passed me while I had my left turn signal on.

BTW - street legal carts make me cringe, they look very dangerous on Morse or Buena Vista when cars are passing at 40+ MPH. And if the driver is going full speed on the multi-modal paths I think they are a danger to the slower traffic. I think they work great in a community with city street speed limits of 25 but not here. |
I get passed few times a week. Only carts I pass usually are the lifestyle carts.

wheel base. That's why they call them "golf carts". |

Someone needs to explain to me what the problem is .Why can't people pass others without getting cursed at? Why is it that the person blocking the faster traffic from flowing not the problem? Driving fast is a choice one makes . No one except the police should be the ones telling them they're wrong. The other day I was passing someone on Pinellas pl in the village of Pinellas and some guy was cussing me out . I wasn't affecting anything he was doing as he was in the diamond lane and I was in the middle of the road passing him . Am I supposed to stay behind him even if he's going slower then I'm capable of going? Folks if I choose to drive fast and if I get caught that's my problem. Before anyone says I'm going to cause an accident I want you to know I would never pass anyone without the proper distance needed to do so. __________________ Very rarely do I get passed but I pass people often only when it's safe to do so .....Have a nice day!! |
Those who have illegally altered their golf carts to exceed 19.6 have never been in a golf cart accident and probably do not use seat belts as well. Almost all the golf cart seats do not have restrains to keep them from flying up and launching you through the windshield if you hit something or get hit. I can tell you from experience that an accident will cure your need for speed.
|
When using loaners, rentals or lifestyle carts I get passed all the time. When sight seeing or making my way slowly home after a tough pickle ball match I get passed often. When concentrating because I have a tee time I very occasionally get passed, and more often am passing folks.
If I see lots of folks behind me because I'm not in a hurry or have a slow cart I pull off on the grass and let them pass. If they are passing me on the road I'll take my foot off the gas so they can pass safely. I'm always amazed at the folks that will speed up when you try to pass. They want a collision. |

These are the folks that have major control issues. Their cart is capable of going as fast as mine but they don't .Only when I try to pass them do they speed up... I'm sorry Gracie but these folks are JERKS!!! |
I thought it was illegal to cross a solid white line hence passing is illegal.

I get passed just about every time I take the cart out. Mine goes 20.3 level ground, 19.2 uphill and can max out at 22 on a steep downgrade. Most of the time I am passed I'm going right about 20, and the passing cart 25+. So what, if they want to chance getting caught, it doesn't concern me in the slightest I also hate to say so, but I agree with the posters that state the slow vehicle causes the accidents. The guy driving 50 on the interstate won't GET into an accident, but he'll CAUSE a whole bunch as others make half-a$$ed moves to get by them |

I've got a new 2017 Yamaha EFI that is clocked at doing just shy of 20 with two people aboard on flat ground. In it, we get passed maybe once every couple of days by people clearly going over 20. It's tempting to get bent out of shape, honk and holler and wonder where cops are when you need them, but we're freshly retired and trying to learn to just relax and let little stuff like that go. I'm just not going to be in a hurry any more and not going to let myself worry about others who are in a hurry.

My cart can do 19.5 mph maximum and the governor stops it from going over that, when going downhill. Probably does 19 mph most of the time.
Getting passed by someone is neither a man or woman thing. It's a human nature thing. Most people feel they are going too slow and they are trying to get somewhere as quickly as possible. Usually, I get passed once or twice a week. I don't let it bother me as long as they don't endanger me. If I need to get there more quickly, I would take my car. Just sayin.............I occasionally stop for a couple of minutes if I am behind a smelly gas cart as I don't want to inhale their fumes. BTW - I always wear seat belts as too many people get injured when ejected from a cart. It's a safety issue for me. |
I get passed , every other mile it seems. and I do 19.9mph.............

A neighbor has an electric cart that goes either 20 or 25 MPH by flipping a switch on the dash. He told me he only flips to 25 MPH to pass slower carts...And he said he rarely uses the 25 MPH mode because at 20 MPH, he is the slowest cart and gets passed all the time.
|
I never once have been passed when driving anywhere on the Hysterical Side but have had 4 near misses with cars and carts going the wrong way around the Water Tower Circle. The main dilemma with getting passed is not the passing itself but the commentary from the passer. When I see someone wanting to get in front I slow down to let them go go go. Why wouldn't I help them before they hurt themselves or others. I don't creep along but I won't be forced into a mistake either. That was my point before.
