Run in's with Recreation Dept.

Have any of you heard or know of persons or groups that have had problems with the Rec. Dept. ??

I received an interesting answer "throw the book" my question what or is "the Book"

redwitch 05-23-2017 04:57 AM

Only issues I've ever heard of was when a group ran over its time and staff had to almost forcibly remove them. Over all, I'd say the staff go out of their way to be helpful. Guests, on the other hand, have not always been nice when they couldn't have their way.

There is a lady on the desk at Laurel Manor who is less than obliging. I always feel about eight years old when I have to speak to her. Other than that, no problems, always thoughtful and helpful people.

karostay 05-23-2017 06:55 AM

One works at the Seabreeze front desk also

When I deal with nasty people, my goal is to irritate them more than they irritate me.

I just put them on my Ignore List and that seems to really get their goats. Do not give then any control over you.

A troll in real life is another matter. Better to get some extra bacon so to speak by being nice rather than ending up with something else. And the bacon in the Rec Center situation might be some more time on the billiards table or the exercise equipment.

We were playing tennis in the middle of a match at Colony a few months ago on a court we reserved when a Rec Dept guy walked onto our court and wanted us to move so he could stand in the shade while checking in pickle ball players. Note, there was shade on the pickle ball courts. We told him no, we were not going to stop our match to move all our stuff just so we couldn't have shade for our change overs.

He stomped off, and came back 5 minutes later, stopping play again, to ask for our ID cards. Three of us had them, one had left hers in her golf bag. He got very huffy and said he'd have to cite her and fill out a form. We told him to send his supervisor out with the form and she would sign it.

His supervisor came out about 20 minutes later to apologize. No form necessary.

CFrance 05-23-2017 08:15 AM

They aren't supposed to stop a game in play (or get you out of a pool) to show ID. That happened to us once, and we said we would show IDs at the end of the game. The woman got bored and left. This was at Hibiscus. That has been our only negative encounter with a Rec Dept. employee.

I have encountered many librarians on power trips since 1988 or so. I suppose every profession has people who need to take control of things.

village dreamer 05-23-2017 09:32 AM

never ever had a problem, I find them very helpful and nice.

graciegirl 05-23-2017 10:18 AM

I haven't ever run into anyone who was a real problem. What is the problem that you are having, OP???????????????????????????????????????????????? ????

Rapscallion St Croix 05-23-2017 10:34 AM

They were less than accommodating when I wanted to start an indoor mumbly peg league. Other than that, no problems.

Tennis, itself, is a negative experience for me.

I will take it a couple of times (everyone has their bad days) but if it happens more than that, I ask them "Are you always this pleasant?" Don't let them get away with changing the subject, make them answer. Normally, they apologize and you have no further issues with them.

Usually, these people have already been warned by management about their behavior but it takes time to change somebody's demeanor and the more you just let them get away with it the longer it lasts.

I absolutely agree with this. How she can still have a job there is beyond me!

:1rotfl:

Excellent! :bigbow:

The real issue comes up when deciding whether to discipline them...or not.

I can imagine the conundrum of those in authority, while they're thinking.... "Dewey or Don'twe." :D

SFSkol 05-23-2017 01:05 PM

It's an idiom.

throw the book at someone
Fig. to charge or convict someone with as many crimes as is possible. "I made the police officer angry, so he took me to the station and threw the book at me. The judge threatened to throw the book at me if I didn't stop insulting the police officer."

Book .... Librarian
(joke)

Prosecution would be a novel if not storied solution.

I've always been a big fan...of good puns. :D

In fact, a good friend of mine who I've known since about 5th grade brought a 'new' game at the time (yeah, I'm old too ;)) over one evening to play...called 'Trivial Pursuit.'

After the bugger probably studied the entire deck for weeks and our spouses had long ago dropped out...it finally came down to him and me.

With the game on the line, he picks up the card to ask me a question, immediately jumps up...and starts stamping around the living room cursing.

After asking him multiple times what the question was, he threw the card at me and said something along the lines of... "you must have stacked the deck."

When I looked, I couldn't help but laugh at the question which was... "what is called a play on words?" :1rotfl:

Of ALL the questions in the deck, that was one that he knew from our 15 or so years of friendship (and my constant puns)...that I would know. :ho:

"If you don't ask you do not get answers" I do have problems, and a lot of our "villagers" have similar problems but a many do not want to confront this.

There are rules in place which are considerable. When you take responsibility for using a room in the rec centers that means you must see to certain things being done and not done. Groups aren't supposed to use the rooms for money making and even the collection of dues is supposed to be carefully monitored.

The person in charge is supposed to be there early and stay late to see that chairs and tables are properly repositioned and things are fairly neat. People who do not live in The Villages are not supposed to use the rec centers except for certain support groups like AA. There are many rules governing the use of rooms including amount of people, too few or too many. If groups don't maintain a certain number they may lose their time in the room. Too many and that becomes a fire hazard.

Borrowing your theme, I believe a case could be made for said prosecution...as long as they don't find just fictional ties that bind.

jaringg 05-23-2017 01:36 PM

The ultimate person in charge is John Rohan. If you want a copy of the rules go to a regional rec center and ask to see a copy of the rules for use of a room.

It would be fine with me if we don't overdue this.

A librarian love note" "ISBN thinking of you."

jaringg 05-23-2017 01:55 PM

I Have.this is not about rooms, its about a lot of things other than that and and mostly about John Rohan

I guess we will never know the problem. Janet Tutt is the ultimate authority around here.

jaringg 05-23-2017 02:03 PM

You mean she is the "dictator" That's Interesting

My goodness, What has happened? I think Janet Tutt is a fine person. I looked back at some of your past posts. You seemed to have a problem with the use of the pools here?? Is that it???

It is all public information, easy to find with a little effort. Easier than coming on TOTV and posting crazy posts. If you got a problem, state what it is, other wise take it to the 19th hole and buy the first round.
BTW, All you ever wanted to know about facility use can be found right here:

http://www.districtgov.org/images/Fa...20Approved.pdf

jaringg 05-23-2017 03:43 PM

Yes for the many years! Same problem. many "neighborhood pools are having exercises in the water, even every day and are not bothered by " the " dictator "John Rohan" To this date I have documented these facts. There not enough pools to accommodate the folks early in the morning that cannot be exposed to the intense sunshine later in
the day. If you need more info contact me PM like "graciegirl" has through PM
I have video of all of these activities.
The original problem came about as a result of a story in "The Village Sun" in 2014 which featured all of the good stuff that was being accomplished using these pools.
All it was a complaint by one person and many "sages" on this site to instigate the problem

rhood 05-23-2017 03:49 PM

Rules and guidelines for lifestyle groups and room usage are on the District web site.

jaringg 05-23-2017 03:53 PM

Nothing there covers this problem!

Honest question...I'm not trying to be difficult, but...

If nothing there covers the problem, are you sure it's against the rules?
