Speeders
Does anyone out there know who to contact concerning speeding vehicles in our community? I called the Sumter Co Sheriff's Office and left a message, but no return call. We live in the Village of Pinellas very close to the entry gate on 466A and Pinellas Pl. Pinellas Place is a virtual speedway on a daily basis. Mainly contractor vehicles, but also residents. They speed from the gate coming into the property and speed to the gate while exiting. Would sure like some reasonable suggestions.

I did the same, with the same result, NO return call. My next step will be to call the Sumter County Commissioners or stop by their office in Pinellas Plaza. Tjasc1411, you are correct, our house backs up to Pinellas Place, and there are many cars and possibly MORE golf carts going over the speed limits.

They put an electronic speed sign on Eisenhower Way.
It got my attention and it's a good reminder. Good to know my cart's speedometer is accurate. |
Sheriff Buford T. Justice would be my first option.
|
I think they should put some speed bumps there about every 5 or 10 feet, that will slow them down.

We've been coming down here for the last three years and this trip I've noticed a large increase in speeding and aggressive driving

Sad to say The Villages is growing Growing Growing.Becoming like any town in USA
Don't get me wrong still love it here..but changes are part of the expansion. Remember when you first got here everyone would :wave:said hello. Road trash was nowhere to be found Back just 6 or seven years ago law enforcement was seen quite regularly on our streets. You didn't dare make a rolling stop Today not so much I haven't seen the motorcycle patrol in at least a year. My take too big to patrol with out expanding :police:dept |
:1rotfl: Take up a collection and put these down. . :D Rubber Speed Bumps - Portable & Recycled | Traffic Safety Store http://www.trafficsafetystore.com/i/...-6-160x208.jpg |
Put it in writing.
I suggest an intensive letter writing campaign.
1. Letters to the Editor of the Villages Sun. 2. Letters to the CDD in which the offenses are taking place, asking that they contact the appropriate law enforcement agency. 3. Letters and e-mail messages to the appropriate law enforcement agency, remembering that The Villages lies in three different counties and in the town of Lady Lake. In the letters: Be very specific about the location and time of day when the offenders are at their worst. Ask for enhanced enforcement of the traffic laws to curtail these offenses. Drive very carefully yourself; it will be embarrassing if you end up getting caught in the increased enforcement effort. |
NO Speed Bumps!

However, worse than that, they wreck your car, even at a slow speed. Boo-Boo, Hiss-Hiss to speed bumps! |
Call 911 and report that there are speeding vehicles in the area. When the deputy arrives, have a conversation with him and ask if the area can receive special attention. Offer the use of your driveway for him to park in, to monitor vehicles.

Good idea, except I would call the non emergency number. |
If you are complaining about the speeding because of the noise I wouldn't ask for speed bumps. They make much more noise.

I have seen many similar threads regarding speeding by contractors and regular drivers.
Then, when speed enforcement does begin, there are threads started about being caught for exceeding the speed limits and Villages being a "cash cow" for the police. There was even a thread by a Villager who got his own radar gun and would write down plate numbers of speeders and notify the police. You can't make everyone happy. |
I wish the sheriff would consider TV to be a cash cow and place a radar unit on Morse Blvd. several hours a day, every day. The speeding is really out of control where I live north of 466, and seldom do we see a sheriff's car anymore. I'm betting there will be a golf cart fatality soon, as the speeders can't seem to keep their right wheels out of the cart lanes on Morse. I continually see speeders traveling at 50 in the 30 zone, who drive right up to the bumper of the car in front of them doing 30, then they hit their brakes. Idiots.

If you feel the contractors are beginning work inordinately early, perhaps the Developer, who has the work being done, can limit their starting time. Construction work in Florida traditionally begins around 7AM. |

I saw three cars pulled over by police on Morse this week so they are out there. I also saw someone driving his unlicensed golf car south of 466A on Morse (not on the cart path) while talking on his phone. I also have noticed there are just as many really slow drivers as there are those that go really fast. I do agree that the workers trucks seem to speed from job to job and don't yield at the round a bouts. I set my cruise at whatever the speed limit is and rarely have anyone on my bumper, more often I have to turn it off for very slow drivers.
|
I nearly got cut off by a lady in a red porsche today at the round-about on Canal St. near TooJay's at LSL. She seemed to be in a great hurry but got "stopped" in traffic at the roundabout at BV. Saw a guy going FAST on Morse/south and made a very fast left hand turn from the straight left lane going south at 466a. He turned in front of traffic as well as the person legally in the left turning lane. Some day Karma will (or might) be their lot in life.

Where in the country does everyone come from where no one speeds? Why do you expect no speeding in the villages?

How do you know they are speeding? If the police wanted to stop it, they will. If you are in danger that is a different story, but if not, best to mind own business and let the professionals do their job. Have trust, if they are that bad, they would have so much points on their license that it would revoked. You don't know the situations.

I am a slow driver and never exceed the speed limit. I just cruise along at a comfortable pace and let the faster drivers do whatever they want to do. People who exceed the speed limit never cause me any problems and I do not understand how they cause a problem for you. |

There is little you can do to stop habitual speeders. |
It would be nice if golf carts would slow down when using neighborhoods as short cuts.

One post made reference to establishing a continual speed
trap on Morse............ Setting up speed traps solely to earn profits creates a conflict of interest or at least the appearance of A Court in New Jersey stopped the state use of red light cameras because they were centered around "profits" the same situation north of here on 301 where a town deliberately set up speed traps. This topic "speed" whether by car, cart or bicycle is a constant topic on this forum. It is always blown out of proportion. I don't believe there are many towns, cities where if you were not at or above the speed limit well you got the one finger salute. the woman in the diamond lane on St Charles that was traveling at about 10mph because she had a large cup of coffee in one hand and one hand on the wheel concerns me more than some guy doing 5-10 mph over the limit on Morse DISTRACTIONS ARE THE LARGEST REASONS FOR ACCIDENTS |
The "speed traps" in Lawtey, Starke, Waldo and other communities on Rte. 301 have decreasing speed limits every hundred yards or so, stepping down from 55 to 45 to 35 etc., and they catch people who aren't paying attention to the unreasonably fast slowdown. That's a speed trap, and is nothing like what I suggested. What I suggested on Morse is a police presence to enforce the single speed limit. There is no legal precedent prohibiting the police from enforcing the speed limit. Just yesterday I drove my golf cart to the mail station on Morse and was passed by a white Cadillac doing at least 50 in the 30 MPH limit, with his wheels on or over the center line. The sheriff's deputy was busy driving through the Hacienda Hills clubhouse parking lot in his marked SUV, looking for who knows what.
|
Would this be the same place to complain about slow drivers too? You know the ones who drive 30 mph on Route 42 which is a 45 mph road.

I agree with your description of Stark, Waldo, etc as a speed trap... However my reference to "conflict of interest stems for your comments that TV residents be used as "cash cows". if "cash cows" is the only basis then it is a "conflict of interest"because "cash" is their only motivator which leads to corrupt policing. Again DISTRACTION is the biggest cause of mishaps and for what is is worth there is a difference between speeding and reckless speeding just as there is between passing and unsafe passing. going 50mph in a 45mph is not the same as going 60+ mph in that same speed zone After several years on this forum I have read where some residents here actually believe no one should exceed the speed limit ever either by car or cart nor should they be able to pass them for any reason. I am not arguing that speeding and passing are not an issue only the degree thereof The only absolute I deal with is death and like all of us I am trying to avoid that one too Personal Best Regards: |
