Well, I just signed up. I hope it works, because it will save me a lot of wasted trips to the mailbox to pick up junk mail. I would rather just opt out of USPS mail altogether, but the government won't allow that.

You should sign up for the services that take you off of "junk" mail lists. The postal service is getting paid by the sender to deliver the mail, not by you. They are just doing what they get paid to do.

Also, keep in mind that advertisers only expect a 3-4% response on a direct mailing. So if they mail to 1000 people, you and 965 other people are tossing the ad.

I think you missed my point. I don't care about junk mail . I only go to the mailbox because I may get a legal notification from someone like the IRS or a court. But, I should be able to cancel my USPS account and require legal documents to be delivered to me by another method. The Government will not allow you to cancel the account, because they want a monopoly on legal notifications.

Thanks much. We have had mail put in the neighbors mailboxes, and if they are traveling, might not receive it for a while. At least now we will know if we should have mail and can "call" the sorter on it to check and see if our mail was misfiled.

I'm curious, What is this alternate method of delivering mail?

How about FedEx or ups? It seems ridiculous that the Federal Government, via USPS, delivers billions of pieces of junk mail to millions of people, and also uses the same system to deliver official legal documents to people who are required to acknowledge receipt for them. If the IRS or a court sends you a letter through the USPS, then you have been legally notified of the content of that letter. My point is that, I should be able to opt out of USPS, so that anyone who sends me an official document would be notified that they need to deliver the document to me by another method. If I could opt out, then I wouldn't ever need to go to the mailbox and they could remove the mailbox. Have you ever wondered why you don't get junk mail from FedEx or ups? It is because your tax dollars are effectively paying for the delivery of the junk mail. So, you as a taxpayer, have to pay for the delivery of junk mail, and you have go to the mailbox and remove the junk mail, while you check to see if someone has decided to send an official document or notification to you that a court will consider legal notification.

I would like to return to the original theme of this thread, USPS Informed Delivery.

It worked like charm for me. This morning, I received an email containing "images of the letter-sized mail that will be arriving soon." Nothing important today.

Thanks OP and others. I registered yesterday. Today my mailbox contained a solicitation from a financial advisor, and a Harbor Freight catalog. No email notification and my USPS on-line account said that nothing has arrived. So, should this take longer, or is it not working right?

I have been receiving the emails for a couple of weeks. It really takes the mystery out of running to get the mail. Several times since we have just let it ride until something worthwhile comes along.

A very good system but I would think once they get people hooked there will be a charge.

You can, Just don't pick up your mail.

USPS.....this is a great idea.

Another day, more letters, but no notification.

Started working today. Must take a few days to get set up. I'm going to like this.

I got my first notice today! Whoopee. This is great. I don't need to make senseless trips to pick up junk mail. Thank you so very much.

It took several days before I received my first email. Hopefully the timing of the email will be improved.....got the email at 10 PM showing me the mail I already had picked up earlier in the day.

Thanks for the FAQ link and to the OP for starting this interesting discussion. Does anyone know if you get email notification when you have your mail on hold while traveling? I ask this because in the FAQ link it mentions "notifications are only sent on days when mail is being processed and delivered to the home". Sounds like a great service for snowflakes/snowbirds who want to keep track of their mail back home while in TV.

Uh-oh. If it sounds too good to be true... Read the attached article. Sounds like we all need to sign up for Informed Delivery merely to get there ahead of the thief who wants to sign up "for" us.

re: Official document and you being responsible for knowing what is in it. I believe that is true if it is sent registered return receipt. The post office needs to attempt delivery three times. At that point, you are responsible for having received the letter.

PRIORITY MAIL- is a great option.
You can track the progress. Delivery is 2-3 days. By the way. you mention Fedex. I read somewhere that Priority mail is mostly carried by Fedex. Not sure if the delivery has legal standing.

As we've all experienced. There are many jokes on the experience. THE CHECK IS IN THE MAIL. More than once I've said it is simply amazing how checks get lost but bills always arrive

If I understand your question correctly, yes - the mail you actually receive in your mailbox is the same, junk mail included. The email you receive that morning informing you of what's coming that day only shows a scan of the pertinent items, not magazines, flyers, etc.

It was helpful to me to use the service while I was in The Villages for 3 weeks. It allowed me to see what was coming in at home up north just in case I forgot to pay a bill or something before I left.

Fenney mail is the pits. The mail addressed to us goes to the Lady Lake post office, not Wildwood that is just up the road. Lady Lake brings it to the Sales Office, then I assume non-postal people at the sales office sort it and we have to go ask for it, if we are expecting a package we have to specifically mention to check packages. We do not get mail on Saturdays and it takes 7 to 8 days to get a first class letter here. We got our water bill yesterday and it was billed on 9/20, we had one day to get it back to them. We also don't get the truth here, yesterday late morning we asked if all the mail was sorted, reply was yes, we got one piece of mail, I knew there had to be more, went' back around 3:00 and they had 8 more pieces for us. We have never received a piece of mail here that wasn't first class, I don't know what they do with bulk rate stuff but they don't give it to us. I really like Fenney but the mail is a real pain.

Sorry to hear about your issues. Hopefully it is just "growing pains" and will get better with time. :(
