Fenney Property

Does anyone know if The Villages bought the property below The Village of Fenney around the Federal Prison? From Google Earth it looks like the prison will be in the center of The Villages if they continue to go south.

Soxman 09-23-2017 10:07 AM

I think that prison will be in Fennys backyard. Wonder if buyers know that?

600th Photo Sq 09-23-2017 10:24 AM

FYI....Whitey Bulger the convicted Mob Boss from Boston is housed @Coleman, along with some other rather nasty individuals.

vintageogauge 09-23-2017 10:44 AM

They are putting in a cattle farm down there somewhere, I think between the prison and the homes. There is nothing buyers have to fear about the prison, the greatest fear in TV would be sink holes. It is very, very, rare that someone would escape from a Federal Prison and if they did do you think they would hang around here. Might hear some cattle but doubtful you'll ever seen a prisoner wandering around. We live in Fenney and don't give the prison a second thought, it's sort of like a tourist attraction down there if you have never seen one. They should add that to the Trolley Tour.

on paper......it looks to be that the prison will be in the center of the villages area down there.

they purchased all the way down 501 to the right of fenny and then south across the street from 470....allot of that land as well.

So I would say yes.... but.....,where we have a home in Broward County Florida...Weston.....we had a federal womens prison that housed the worse of the worse....same as Coleman up here, that was actually moved when the expensive subdivisions came close and wanted more space and the city and county thought they could get more revenue from homes. so you just never know...

I love your attitude......making lemonaid out of lemons with the prison tourist attraction.......but
Escape wouldn't be my issue.....its the lights and alarms going on all threw the day, that one of the fenny residents complained about that might be a deterrent, to some anyway.

graciegirl 09-23-2017 11:03 AM

Sometimes people say negative things about new areas because of their own agenda. For instance, time after time people will diss new areas and bring up smells and prisons and waiting a long time for business nearby and sometimes I think it is because they work for a competitor or may be a realtor who cannot sell new homes IN FENNEY. Or maybe they live off campus and are just plain jealous of Villagers.

I so dislike negativity...just generally dislike it but I really get mad when someone uses it to help their views or plan.

Real people have chosen to live in those new areas and they love their homes and their choice.

When we bought in our home here, someone said "Why in the world would you buy so close to that traffic noise on 466?" That made us feel like fools, until we saw how much our homes have escalated in value. The homes at Fenney seem to be priced quite nicely. When those folks decide to move to their second home, like many do here, they will make a lot of money.

Hide and watch.

Or WAIT FOR THEM TO Live there for years and never have a prison break or a disaster. Or hear sirens or bells...............WAIT AND SEE.

Who says they wouldn't head for the easy pray across the pasture? After all they had years of pumping iron to over power guards and any old retirees close by. :undecided:

I haven't seen a light or heard a siren since we move in down here.

We just like to refer to it as "the other gated community".

Just wondering; any of you who purchased in Fenney......did your sale's rep let you know there was a prison near by? If not; were you already aware there was a prison near by; if not did you find out there was a prison near by after you closed on your home?

You do realize Coleman federal Prison will be VCDD 13, however I don't think there will be golf cart access! :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

graciegirl 09-23-2017 12:01 PM

Those damn sales reps who aren't real realtors didn't tell US that there were so many negative, trouble starting old people who lived here either.

I want my money back.

Schaumburger 09-23-2017 12:56 PM

I visited Fenney during my visit to TV 3 weeks ago, I thought Fenney was lovely. Everyone using the pool near the rec center looked quite happy. Hope all the new residents in Fenney are happy and enjoying their new homes and the walking/nature path.

But is Coleman getting any pickleball courts or an adult pool? :)

Don't worry, the dogs will get them. Didn't you watch any prison break movies? And if they get past the bloodhounds the local Bijons and Peek-a-poos are an excellent second line of defense.

So when you purchased here....did they tell you a Federal prison was about 6 miles away.....after they overpower the guards and car jack transportation and head north to Publix (they will need food) and then find a snowbird empty house to hide in and break in to the house next store to get their TV. I'm nervous now :)

Schaumburger 09-23-2017 02:16 PM

If the prison is the real reason you don't buy a home in Fenney then I feel sorry for you. The chance of a problem is small. We lived a few miles from a Maximum security prison in N.J. with no problem ever.

buzzy 09-23-2017 02:33 PM

The prison will be the next town square. And, every night the band will start by playing Jail House Rock.

Guess our reps were pretty forthcoming in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014

Yeah, they'll be happy until they get that first tax bill and figure out what that bond will cost.

Of course there was a bond. You happened to be able to pay it off. That obviously added to the price of the home. No escapes it. You either cough up the big bucks or you pay for it for many years with interest. Either way, there is a bond down there.

This is an interesting thread. As a person who inspects over 400 new homes in The Villages every year top to bottom, on roofs, in attics, Lanai's, etc, I think some here are not seeing something that the hierarchy of The Villages clearly and wisely see.

The simple fact is this. Folks are different. Folks want different things. For a developer to be successful, they need to understand this. The Villages as a developer gets it.

What do I mean by this? Simple. I see folks who happily pay a large premium for a pond view. Or a conservation view. They love it. They love waking up everyday and seeing that tranquil view. For them it is worth every penny. Down the road years from now when they sell they will sell to another person who has that same mindset.

I see other folks all the time who would HATE that view. They tell me "no way, the bugs, the snakes, etc....it is a swamp!" Others love a golf course view. Others tell me, "No way! Golf carts driving by your house, golf balls hitting your house, etc, etc."

Others do not mind kissing lanai's, some would prefer not to have them. Some folks want a wood frame vinyl sided house, some stucco.

I have met people who think their 4000 sqft. Premier home is too small for just 2 people. I met a lady the other day who is thrilled with her 1200 sq ft cottage. Some love their courtyard villa, some love walls, some crave the wide open spaces.

People are thankfully very different, and The Villages does a great job of having something for everyone.

Fenny is beautiful, and I look forward to doing one year warranty inspections there soon.

We all have opinions, but perhaps we should be careful that our opinions do not "rain on someone's parade". EVERY home has good and bad points, and a feature that someone would NEVER live with may be in your opinion the best part of your home.

Anyone who lives anywhere in The Villages is probably in the top 1% of the worlds population......we are ALL very blessed.

Just my two cents....may not be worth even that.

Respectfully, Frank D.

If you were made to feel a fool because you bought near traffic noise, imagine what those who bought near the dump feel like when told their lanai smells like a sewage tank? This is not about dissing TV, we're all obviously here because we like the place. This is about smart people trying to do their due diligence so that they don't end up living in a home that is not in their comfort zone. A dump is a big deal, a prison is a big deal! Maybe not for some folks but for many it is. The realtors don't seem to be disclosing this information so it's up to us disclose it to one another and that is where TOTV comes in. If we don't, then we truly live in La La Land inside The Bubble.

Thank you Frank. Some people wake up every day and never look up at the sky to see what a wondrous world we live in. The negativity gets old. I have a friend who lives close to Sing Sing built in 1826, in Ossining NY and his home is worth $800,000.

well said and extremely true......knowledge and due diligence is very important when spending a significant amount of money.
Most educated people want to know what and where they are buying, before they pay and its too late.

I firmly believe that forums and neighbors are the best way to get the information. Weeding thru those with the rose color glasses and getting to the reality is essential.

Trusting sales people (homes or cars, what have you) is no longer the qualified answer.

I bet The Villages will market Coleman Jail as a 'Gated Community' as a reason to buy near there.:girlneener:

newknees12 09-24-2017 10:15 AM

We bought a home in Fenney in May and TV real estate agent told us up front that the Federal maximum security prison was due south of Fenney - about five miles by car and less as the crow flies. Since we showed real interest in the property from the first time we saw it, he disclosed this information during the first viewing. We appreciated his veracity and discussed the prison's proximity that night and decided that was not enough of a deterrent to look elsewhere in TV.
