Are you a 1 car, 1 golf cart family......?

Just a couple of things I'm pondering on as I dream about my move to The Villages.......

Do most of you downsize to just 1 car and a golf cart?

Are there some who choose not to have a car at all and just use a golf cart for their transportation in TV? I imagine some might do that and then just rent a car when necessary.

What about his and hers golf carts? Are there people who choose to do that, or would that be overkill?

I anticipate we would keep one vehicle and get one golf cart to begin with and then see how it goes.

TIA!

Car? Cart?

That is our plan... we have a new car and hope to purchase a golf cart in December. I think we might end up a one car two cart family.

villages07 10-14-2009 11:58 AM

Betty,

We started with 2 cars and one golf cart and were always 'negotiating' for who got to take the golf cart while the cars sat idly in the garage.

So, we sold one of the cars and bought a 2nd cart. The car still sits in the garage for days at a time but we are both happy out buzzing around independently in our golf carts.

It's good to have a car for trips off campus, chilly/rainy days, guests, trips to the far end of the Villages, etc. But, our first choice will always be to take the golf cart out.

That is our plan also for when we become fulltimers. Right now have 1 car and 1 truck, plus the Golf Cart. The truck is definitely coming in handy now with moving things down from our home in Alabama. But once in TV, we have decided we will have no real need for a truck anymore. So plan to trade both vehicles in for one new car, and the Golf Cart.

We're not in TV yet, but as we see it now, here is our plan...

We have a full-size sedan (3 yrs old) and a full-size pickup truck (12 yrs old). We plan to sell both and get a mid-size crossover (like an SUV) and a golf cart.

By the way, I'm gonna miss my pickup... at least for a little while.

I think that will probably be how we end up. Definitely want to keep one vehicle...and like the idea of having 2 carts for independant use around TV for those times we are pursuing different interests and going in separate directions.

otherbruddaDarrell 10-14-2009 01:15 PM

We went from 2 cars and 1 cart to 1 car and his-n- her carts. I traded in my Smart car and her Scion for a loaded Buick Rendevous that we both like for trips.
She has an electric Clubcar (Fl Gatormobile/orange&blue) I have:pepper2: a 4passenger gas yamaha. 2 carts are better....if we have company we have room. We also drive our carts to work in TV.:pepper2:

katezbox 10-14-2009 01:19 PM

Betty,

We are not retired yet - so need the two cars. Once we do, I think V07 has it right if you are both "goers" and like to do things independently as well as together. We are thinking of making gone street legal so we can go to places near TV without having to use the car (DDRR etc.) We are also thinking of having one with the sliding doors - so if my hubs takes it to work we don't need to worry about the rain.

golfnut 10-14-2009 01:25 PM

1 car, 2 carts............GN

dp000 10-14-2009 02:35 PM

cars vs carts

We did as village07 did...we started with 2 cars and a golf cart. We now have 1 car and 2 carts. If you are actively involved in The Villages, you will find that you need 2 carts. We only use the car when we go off the "reservation".

Fourpar 10-14-2009 02:53 PM

Came to TV with 1 car. I sold mine before the move:cryin2:. Bought new cart (electric) when we moved in. Have since bought another, also electric. Life is simpler now :pepper2:

MelZ 10-14-2009 03:49 PM

Currently we have two cars in NY and one in Fl, when we move to TV we will have sold one of our NY cars and will get a golf cart.

My MGTD in Florida is not for sale :coolsmiley:

k2at 10-15-2009 07:25 AM

We will have one car, one cart, and one motorcycle (for me).

Can one fit a car and two carts into a standard two car garage?

otherbruddaDarrell 10-15-2009 09:06 AM

Yes

Campbell soup 10-15-2009 10:41 AM

We just have a GEM which is an electric car..it gets around just fine. If we want to take a trip ...we just rent a car for a few days.

The Great Fumar 10-15-2009 07:20 PM

We have one Car , 2 golf carts , and a scooter...........To be honest we probably don't need two golf carts and definitely don't need a scooter......so we may start parring down some of our rolling stock........
If you do feel you need two carts , you might consider one electric and one gas............The Villages are getting very large now and sometimes the gas cart will come in handy for its longer range..........

PS, we live on the north end of TV :cold:

Ohiogirl 10-15-2009 07:46 PM

Did you add another dedicated golf cart circuit/plug? If so, approx how much was it? We have a 2 seater electric and are either going to add a 4 seater (probably gas) or if we buy another 2 seater, might add the flip seat to one of them. Any thoughts on that?

villages07 10-15-2009 09:14 PM

We have 2 electric carts. We plug one into the dedicated circuit and plug the other into a standard 110 outlet in the garage. No problems so far.

OMG... you just took me back to when I owned a Yamaha 250 Enduro. <sigh> That was a long time ago.

nkrifats 10-17-2009 04:25 PM

We are not in the villages full time but plan on 1 car and 1 cart.

Happy Villager 1 10-17-2009 10:18 PM

We have one car and "had" two electric golf carts. We use the golf cart all the time and usually we are together so we traded in the two electric and purchased a new Yamaha gas cart. We took possession of the Yamaha on 3/31/09 and now have 3000 miles on the cart.

TomW 10-19-2009 10:40 AM

We are planning on one car (Mazda 3), 1 cart (Electric) and two scooters (Burgman 650 Exec, Honda Metro 50.) I expect this stable will evolve over time. What I wonder about most is the value of a convertible in TV??

Mintjulep 10-19-2009 12:11 PM

We started with 2 cars and 2 carts.
After putting less than a 100 miles on one of the cars in over a year, we sold it, and kept one car (SUV).
We have a gas Club Car that is convertible to a 4 seater, and an electric Club Car. We mostly use the gas cart if going somewhere together.

Jazzper 12-15-2009 02:04 PM

Parking for 2nd cart in CYV

Moved to a new thread -- sorry...should have started a new one.

My brother let me use his new Candy Apple Red Mustang convertible when we were in TV in October - turned a lot of heads and we really enjoyed using it.

Convertible

Well, My wife told me my truck was not coming, and her car and convertible were, and that she was expecting to have her own golf cart too,
so I guess we'll be two cars and two carts,
We had her convertible there in June and it was a blast to tool around in the early evening with the top down,

I guess it is what ever makes you happy! er, um, Her happy!

whoooo!

tpop1 12-15-2009 05:34 PM

2 cars, 1 cart....

Got to TV in November with 2 cars, 1 cart.

Car no. 2 used only to make sure it gets started weekly.

Its gonna' go quickly; highly redundant!!!

downeaster 12-15-2009 06:13 PM

Sold the second car eight plus years ago just prior to moving here. Been a one car one cart family ever since and content with the arrangement.

chuckster 12-15-2009 09:29 PM

1 car and 1 electric cart work just fine for us. Been here 6 years and sold the second auto after 1 year. One of us works and uses either the car/cart depending on who is golfing that day. Amazing how the decision lowered our insurance and maintenance/operating costs/year. Have talked about a second cart but don't see the need yet...........

eremite06 12-16-2009 03:54 PM

1 car, 1 truck, 2 motorcycles, 2 recumbents, 1 mountain bike.

Cart and car

One car and 2 carts.

Tom Hannon 10-19-2010 06:40 AM

We plan on having my Mini cooper and one cart until we have a few extra $$$ to buy a second cart. I feel once we get familiarized with TV, wifey and I will be going different places and may need a second cart. We'll worry about that issue within a few months. My biggest decision is whether to but a good used cart in the $5-6 thousand range or to spring 10 grand on a new one. I have two weeks to decide.

otherbruddaDarrell 10-19-2010 07:43 AM

Split it............... and buy a reconditioned Yamaha for around $7500

elevatorman 10-19-2010 08:42 AM

2 carts and 1 car. Carts are new electric and about $8200 each.

teachnmo 10-19-2010 09:08 AM

Ditto here

We had a car and a pickup and an electric golf cart. Pickup was in Missouri but had difficulty with licensing and insurance since we are full time Florida residents.

Ended up selling the pickup and purchasing a gas golf cart. We are extremely happy with that arrangement. If you are both active in activities you will fight over the golf cart. So really depends on your activity level.

It's WONDERFUL not to be filling up the car with gas. We use about 1/4 tank of gas a week.

You will love it here!:BigApplause:
