Water in TV

I have excellent water here in Minnesota. Open the faucet and out come the goods. However this may be different in TV? I won't have a side by side for drinking water. What kind of water system do most people seem to choose in TV? Ie: for coffee, soup, drinking, washing vegies? :cold:

k2at 10-28-2009 05:17 AM

If u live in TV, everyone uses the same drinking water which is Municipal water system. Each home has the option of then adding to that an in-house water purification system if they so desire.

water in TV

The water that comes out of the tap is undrinkable, IMHO. The first thing I did after moving into my new house was to get a whole house water purification system installed.

BUC 10-28-2009 06:23 AM

Does the water taste bad? My youngest daughter goes to Valdosta State in Valdosta,Ga. When we go down to send a weekend or just visit, The water is terible even the ice taste bad. I guess it'll be bottled water in the T.V. Can you taste the bad water in he ice at restauts?

Army Guy 10-28-2009 07:01 AM

Being military I have lived all over the world and with that have drank the water straight form the tap, in most places. The water in TV tastes fine to me, no problems, and me and the wife drink a lot of it.
We did have a filter system put on our sink with a faucet in our villa, just because we do worry about the things you CAN'T taste that may be in there!
The city we are moving from into TV, bottles their water and sells it under various names, and I see no difference between the two!

I think the tap water tastes fine, although we mostly get our drinking water from the side by side fridge, which includes a filter.

The one downside to tap water is that the cold water is usually lukewarm so it's not very refreshing right out of the tap without some ice.

otherbruddaDarrell 10-28-2009 07:37 AM

The only thing I have noticed is a taste of chlorine from the tap. The filter on my fridge removes that taste/smell.
We had a regular (no dispense) fridge because of the size limitations in our kithen and the door going to the garage.
Sears had a smaller sized double door fridge with filtered water/ice disp. that we had them install in place of the regular fridge.
The door going to the garage was right next to the fridge and swung in and would hit the fridge everytime, so we had a carpenter remove the frame and door and change it so it now opens in to the garage and does not hit the fridge. :highfive:

I just checked a lot of your answers and I thank you. But I have another question. Wouldn't a purification system like PUR be ok on the kitchen sink rather giving the entire house a purification system? I'm trying to rationalize this. Why have shower water purified along with laundry water? Wouldn't an entire purification system for the entire house cost so much more than one sink outlet?

EdV 10-28-2009 01:36 PM

Check out PUR's slender space saving refrigerator dispenser. Now not only is your drinking water filtered, but it's nice and cold too.

Tweety Bird 10-28-2009 06:19 PM

Thank you VERY much. I really appreciate the info

otherbruddaDarrell 10-28-2009 07:17 PM

On my condo up north I have a reverse osmosis filter system under the sink that works very well for my renters.
Clean filtered water on a seperate faucet for drinking & coffee.
I had mine installed, but Lowes and home depot have similiar under the sink sets also.;)

Muncle 10-28-2009 07:57 PM

Warning --- the marketing of water purification systems is one of the most shyster-ridden industries in the state of Florida. These sales people make the Congress look ethical by comparison. If you decide to go with a water system of any kind, check both the national product and the local agent out with the BBB, Seniors Against Crime, and the FL AG.

water in TV

I also think the water in TV tastes just fine and is not particularly hard. I've also lived a lot of places. Realize that whatever you are used to is what tastes normal to you. Taste is very personal.

We use a Britta pitcher with charcoal filters that we keep in the fridge up north, but only "just in case" - right now we drink the Villages water from the tap. I personally can't tell the difference between Columbus, OH water and The Villages water. Will move the Britta pitcher down with us when we retire.

I have lived places where I thought the water did taste awful - usually well water. Got used to it after many months and then city water (chlorinated) would start to taste bad when I visited friends/family and smelled awful. Moved back to a city and vice versa.

I must say that the water at one of my daughter's apartments (Orlando close to Winter Park) had undrinkable (IMHO) water - tasted extremely salty to me. They disliked it also. Now she lives in Kissimmee and it tastes fine.

jblum8156 10-28-2009 09:12 PM

To Tweety Bird: I wanted all the water treated because I have very dry skin and hard water makes it worse. The softened water does wonders for my skin, and also helps with the laundry.

bluedog103 10-28-2009 09:34 PM

Where I live in New York State we sometimes get sediment in our water from municipal wells. I installed a whole house filtration system which removes the sediment as well as that annoying chlorine taste. I got mine from a plumbing supply dealer but they are
available from Home Depot for less than $50.00 and are easy to install. If you can sweat a joint, you can install the filter housing very quickly. There is a bypass position so if you are using water you don't need filtered, such as washing a car, you can easily bypass the filter. Filters last a few months and are very inexpensive.

sschuler1 10-28-2009 10:02 PM

Tweety - I have been in TV for a couple of months now, and I have to agree that I originally thought the water tasted awful. But i drink a lot of water and decided to see if i could make myself get used to the taste because i'm just too cheap to buy bottled water. I don't really notice as much anymore. I'm sure that i will eventually not notice at all. I guess it's up to you to decide if you can stand the taste until you can get used to it.

zcaveman 10-29-2009 07:36 AM

I had a water softener in NJ because I had a well and I liked the feel of the soft water on the body when taking a shower. It did not make me feel sticky. When I moved down here I got a water softener and liked it. I had the potassium chloride version and when the wife had to go on low potassium I shut it off. The showers felt crummy and there was a smell and taste of chlorine in the water on occasion. I replaced the holding tank and went to the salt version and all is well again.

Maybe it is just a spiel but you use less detergent in the washer, and the pipes are cleaner and you do not need to replace the aerators as often with a softener.

Also, the amount of salt that gets through the softener is minuscule and the other chemicals in the water are filtered out also.

As I have said in lots of other posts on water softeners, it is to each his own. I prefer the softener. Others don't.

Very interesting thoughts on the matter. Everyone is so different and taste is so relative. I will have to tend to these decisions when I move to TV in January. I think I will buy a Brita filter to take with me and then see how the water works for my laundry as I literally LIVE there. Decisions...decisions

I am a water addict. It's honestly about all I drink, and I always have a water bottle with me. Having lived in several Florida cities, I believe the best water in Florida is right here in TV. I usually open up a fresh bottle of water every morning, then refill it throughout the day from my fridge, which does have the filter through the door.

I think most of the restaurants must sever filtered water as well, because I can't think of one place that has served water that wasn't good.

Freeda 10-31-2009 01:08 AM

Another great thing about the water supply here in TV is that it does not have fluoride in it.

Why would that be considered "great"? I always thought fluoride is important to prevent cavities in teeth.

Fluoride in Fluorida

Depends upon your source!
We just ran across a 'story' grandstanding for the cash cow High Fructose Corn Syrup - sponsored by \who else? the corn growers.

Same thing about 'Clean coal', 'Bottled Water' and the like.
Look in the right (or wrong) places and you can make a case for most anything.

This Article
http://www.mbschachter.com/dangers_o...d_fluorida.htm
seems to have some well-credentialed sources like JAMA, NEJM,(acronyms explained TH and Tony!) Mayo Clinic......And we have heard the same from many docs through the ages - both natural and AMA.

Whatever fills yer cup!!:mornincoffee: :beer3:

Fluoride is the reason for the poison control warning on toothpastes. There is extensive research on fluoride's dangers, and on the lack of any true science behind the claim that it reduces cavities. Dr. Joseph Mercola's website, http://www.mercola.com and many other sources contain this information.

A little tip re the chlorine.....after the water has sat in the pipes for a while the chlorine can leech out and when you first run the water, the odor is very noticeable; however, let the water run for several seconds to let the settled chlorine pass through and all is good again.:coolsmiley:

Why not wait until you taste the water. It's fine for me. We do use a dispenser on the fridge, but water from the tap is fine. There is a company next to The Villages that sells bottled water so it must be o.k.

Yoda 01-25-2010 11:15 PM

One thing that can be said for sure, you will recieve the most calls from people trying to fix your water before you find out there is nothing wrong with it.

Just say no.

tastes fine to me right out of the tap, however, as others have said we do have a brita pitcher we fill and keep in the fridge for things we can't detect..gn

What does this discussion have to do with area restaurants??

ldj1938 01-26-2010 11:03 AM

Flouride

My dentist, Kathleen Williams, recommends a flouride rinse after brushing because there is no flouride in our water. Is she really trying to poison me? She seems to be a first rate dentist. I will continue to rinse. Thank you:wave:

Russ_Boston 01-26-2010 11:25 AM

I would think the fluoride in a rinse and spit would be far less dangerous than drinking it (even assuming it was dangerous to swallow).

It goes to whether they serve filtered or unfiltered tap water.

Nothing. It is in the wrong category.

The original question was: I have excellent water here in Minnesota. Open the faucet and out come the goods. However this may be different in TV? I won't have a side by side for drinking water. I prefer a water softener. I turned it off a year ago for health reasons and thought the water sucked. I had the water softener renovated and am now happy.

From reading all of the TOTV forums on water, I find that everyone has different taste buds when it comes to water. I agree with one poster who said to try the water out of the tap and decided if you like it or not.

I did not like it. Too chlorine tasting to me. And too hard. I like the water softener because it saves me money on soaps and detergents. And my skin feels better after a shower. But then that is my preference.

Here's some more recent information on fluoride; even the CDC and ADA now concede that it is not good for teeth. This info is from www.mercola.com, the website of Dr. Mercola, MD

CDC and ADA Now Advise to Avoid Using Fluoride - Posted By Dr. Mercola |
November 13 2010

A new study in the Journal of the American Dental Association finds once again that, contrary to what most people have been told, fluoride is actually bad for teeth.

Exposure to high levels of fluoride results in a condition known as fluorosis, in which tooth enamel becomes discolored. The condition can eventually lead to badly damaged teeth. The new study found that fluoride intake during a child's first few years of life is significantly associated with fluorosis, and warned against using fluoridated water in infant formula.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is of a similar opinion. According to their website:

"Recent evidence suggests that mixing powdered or liquid infant formula concentrate with fluoridated water on a regular basis may increase the chance of a child developing ... enamel fluorosis."

Freeda - If you believe everything Dr. Mercola writes on that website well I have some land....

I'm not saying everything is hogwash but there is a lot of exaggeration and slightly misleading info going on. I used to follow him and for the most part I think the main idea is to get you to subscribe to the monthly bulletin so you'll buy their products.

jblum8156 01-07-2011 04:51 PM

One reason to have your shower water softened is that hard water is very irritating and drying to your skin

gongoozler 01-07-2011 08:37 PM

Hard water is also very hard on the pipes . . . over time it can cause pin hole leaks.

Cathy H 01-07-2011 09:03 PM

Water in the Villages is pre-treated before delivery, but as in many such systems taste is an issue. We easily resolve this with a Brita filter on a pitcher kept in the refridgerator.

elevatorman 01-07-2011 09:27 PM

The water tastes fine to me but the Vet said use bottled water for Rover.????

ducati1974 01-07-2011 10:18 PM

For myself I think the water here tastes fine (through the fridge). It's a non-issue for me.
