Banking/ATM usage in TV

My wife and I will be spending the month of March in TV. What is the recommendation for cashing a check and/or using an ATM? I have never paid an ATM fee and never will. With that being said, if I need some cash, are there banks that will cash a check for me? I would be happy to open a small savings account to make check cashing easier. What do snowbirds do for banking needs in TV?

2newyorkers 01-05-2018 01:55 PM

What bank do you have now? Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Chase all have branches in TV.

TJLAMPHERE 01-05-2018 02:08 PM

0 for 3.....have a Chase Visa Card, but no savings or checking account. Nothing for the other 2.

N44125 01-05-2018 02:11 PM

There’s a Chase bank in TV. Located on Parr Dr. across from Rt 466.

And another Chase branch in Pinellas Plaza on 466A.

Suntrust is also here

Open a Citizens First account. Not sure what the rules are if a savings account for ATM fees but a free checking account would take care of your fee issue. Otherwise, You are going to have to resign yourself to paying ATM fees or bringing a large amount of cash. If your banking institute is only local to your area, you’re going to have problems writing a check without paying a fee around here.

Most snowbirds have a Citizens account or their bank is one of the big national ones.

Allegiance 01-05-2018 03:15 PM

I don't remember the last time I "cashed a check." Use Credit cards for 99% of everything. If you actually need cash, bring some with you or just ask your bank where the debit card fees are the least. There are banks that have reciprocity and do not charge fees.

Worst case you pay a couple dollars, if you plan on living here one day open an account at citizens or suntrust. If you use an atm a lot open citizens, they are everywhere.

If you want to make an easy $500, open a chase checking and savings with direct deposit.

It's just one month. Vowing to never pay a fee is not a good reason to open an account For a one month visit.

Open a Schwab investor checking account. Comes with a debit/credit card and you can use it in any ATM any where in the world, at any bank and all fees are reimbursed.
I just use the ATM I find closest to me where ever I am and never pay a fee. Every transaction says there will be a fee, but 100% are paid by Schwab.

Yup, we love our Schwab Account. We make deposit on our iPhone. Who would have ever believed the way we Bank in today’s world.

kfierle 01-05-2018 05:19 PM

Why not use your debit card at the grocery store when you shop and hit the cash back button. Never a fee when you do it this way.

New Englander 01-05-2018 05:20 PM

For one month, I would bring enough cash with me and what you don't use bring back home. I have Citizens First accounts, but I live here full time.

:agree:

When in The Villages I use my Schwab card at the Citizens First ATMs (the bank owned/controlled by the developer) which are convenient and literally all over the place. With Schwab one never pays a fee at either domestic or foreign bank ATMs. I lost my Schwab card in Turkey (the country). I called them collect and they offered to overnight me another free of charge. Now THAT is SERVICE!

If you have a Debit Card, you can make a withdrawal of cash at the ATM's at Publix with no ATM Fee. I think that may be the case at all Publix locations in Florida. There are multiple Publix Supermarkets in The Villages.

Great tip. All banks? What is limit?

I love our Schwab investment account. Even in Europe, we incur no transaction fees for using the debit card--just the foreign exchange rate. However, you do have to make an investment or two with Schwab in order to qualify for an investor account.

For a month, I wouldn't go to the trouble of opening another bank account. How many times would you make a cash withdrawal? You could possibly figure out how much you need for each two-week period and limit your ATM charges. But that's just my opinion.

I hope you have a lovely, warm time!

If you purchase something at a store, you can use your Debit card and get cash back - no fee to do it at the cash register. That is what I would do or else use a credit card!

asianthree 01-06-2018 06:11 AM

We use our AE when we travel, I plan out how much cash and take it with us. Thankfully both of our banks are located in TV

Depending on the bank that issued the debit card, THEY may have a charge for using an ATM other than theirs though.

While a couple of dollar charge for the convenience of just using any ATM is well worth it for me...there is another easy way you can get cash back without any fees.

Just buy a pack of gum at Publix and get cash back...without any charges.

Be advised though, that the only Publix that I'm aware of that allows more than $50 cash back...is the one at Southern Trace shopping center on 466.

They will give up to $100 cash back.

And if you want more than that, I've never had a cashier deny me (or even complain about it) purchasing a couple of packs of gum separately...to get $100 back from each purchase.

Quick and easy. :ho:

If you have a debit card you can always get cash when you are checking out at just about any store.

Fidelity offers the same. Free checks. Never pay ATM fees. They are reimbursed 100%. Deposit checks right from your phone. Comes with debit card that you can use everywhere. :a040:

What is a check?
To be serious try Schwab

DigitalGranny 01-06-2018 06:10 PM

We use PNC. They have an ATM in the Walmart/Sonic parking lot on US 441 and a branch on the main drag in Leesburg. BUT, they also offer that you can use any ATM, and they will refund the fees to your account. We travel a lot and find that feature to be very handy.

We keep a checking account with Bank of America because just about anywhere you go you can find a B of A ATM. When at the Villages, I can drive my golf cart up to a drive through ATM on Parr Drive. Very convenient.

simpilot 01-07-2018 06:24 AM

I have an Ally bank card. Can be used at any banks ATM with all fees reimbursed.

Not true anymore--free for withdrawals made at an Allpoint ATM, plus reimbursed up to $10/statement cycle for withdrawals made at ATMs outside Allpoint.

Find Allpoint ATMs in TV here: Find An ATM Near Me: Ally Bank ATM & Cash Back Locations | Ally Bank But mostly Citizens First Banks and a Winn Dixie. There's a Walgreens that will give you cash back without a fee.

We have the same service with Ameritrade.

5/3 bank

My 5/3 ATM card works in the network supported at the ATM at Publix. Never a fee. Check the network on your bank card. We moved down here and never changed our bank even though there is no branch here. Closest branch is Clermont but that's OK.

Chatbrat 01-07-2018 09:22 PM

Boys & girls you are throwing away lots of free $$ & warrantee & protection by using cash, debit cards & checks

With credit cards you get cash back with the proper card, you get extended warrantees/guarantee & you can dispute problems with purchases; also if a debit card is hacked --you can lose what ever is in your checking account--you have very limited protection if you use debit cards--we don't have any

Get rid of your debit cards

EPutnam1863 01-07-2018 09:49 PM

Gee, who would want to go through the hassle of opening and then closing a local account just to avoid paying $2.00-$3.00 ATM fee? If one can afford to rent a place, then he should be able to afford the fees.

Cobh521 01-08-2018 06:43 AM

Ask your bank if they have a sister bank here. Our credit union are not here but we can use ATM for free at publix and Wawa. Also campus USA gives us the courtesy of banking there is we need to make deposits into our accounts

mrf6969 01-08-2018 08:49 AM

All-Point ATM machines in most Walgreen and CVS stores here in TV and they never charge me a fee.

My ATM card is both a debit and credit card. Two in one and sometimes there is the option to select either one when making a purchase.

It's hard to travel without a debit card for getting cash. The minute you use a credit card for cash, the cc company starts charging you interest on the cash.

Rga20 01-08-2018 01:24 PM

Maybe someone made the point and I missed it, but I just get cash back when I buy things at the grocery store etc. I know at Publix, you could buy a pack of gum and get up to $400 cash back....never any fees.

Rga20 01-08-2018 01:27 PM

My apologies...suggestion already posted.
