Red Sauce

I don't remember writing in regarding a Village restaurant before but I think this is appropriate. I have ordered the white sauce and clams from Red Sauce a few times and it was always fine. Yesterday I ordered it (take out dinner) and it was terrible. The clams were still dirty with loads of sand in them, there were only the shell clams and they were thrown in the dish like scrap, there was no bread and the pasta was very large in size but not in volume. All in all it was so bad it could turn you off from ever eating white clam sauce again. We did call the restaurant when we got home to let them know of the terrible dinner. Of course we will not go back as why risk another high price meal that is terrible. This is a strong indication as to why most residents we run into say there is no real good restaurant in the Villages. Of course there must be one or two but this is the kind that ruin it for the "good ones"!:icon_hungry:

Personally, I feel, if you've had, as you stated, many good meals there, and only one bad one, you should probably give them at least one more try, if you truly enjoyed it the other times. After all, everyones entitled to one mistake, could have just been a bad day all around.

tedquick 01-24-2018 11:22 AM

I love Red Sauce and eat there at least once a week. Sometimes it is not as good as it is most of the time, but then, I'm not always the best that I can be either. Don't give up on them. Do yourself a favor and give them another shot.

Zoomie1955 01-24-2018 11:28 AM

In my opinion, a restaurant should never have a bad day!!!!

Kerry Azz 01-24-2018 11:39 AM

Bad days happen

Unfortunately all restaurants have a bad day having owed one I know there are times when somethings just slip by Call the owner Jack or the manager he’s a pretty good guy give him a call his name is Jack. One bad experience shouldn’t make you not want to dine there again.

BRN_RI_FL 01-24-2018 12:23 PM

I guess consistency is the key to having a successful and long-lasting Restaurant. We go out to eat often and back in RI, there are only maybe 3 or 4 restaurants where the meals have always been good. We also go to Cody’s often here and have always been pleased with the food. Yesterday we stopped at lunch for soup and salad. Salad was great like usual. The chicken vegetable soup was the worst I’ve ever had. No chicken, few vegetables, fat floating on top and salty as hell. I did speak to the manager about it.

MikeV 01-24-2018 12:50 PM

We don’t go there anymore. Food is mediocre at best.

At the gym I go to I met a person who owned a world class Italian restaurant in Manhattan-I asked what restaurant does he go to-he said" the best of the worst is RED Sauce"-can't comment on Red Sauce because we like Northern Italian style food & red sauce is in general southern style and have never stepped foot in Red Sauce

Neither should our marriages but they do, every business has humans for employees and sometimes they have a bad day. Of course you might be one of those that never do then I could you understand your position. Red Sauce is one of the best and I sure wouldn't let one bad experience negate all the good experiences I have had there. I wish you the best on your search for that perfect restaurant or other business that never has a bad day.

I would have taken the meals back to the restaurant.....not just called.

Reeactions

Some reactions to the comments are. In all fairness we did call the restaurant back and the only comment was sorry and we will talk to the server for not including bread. No mention of the poor quality of the food. The cost of the meal was approximately $18+ and a $3.00 tip for the person who handed it to us. I am not ready to spend another $18+ to risk a decent meal. I agree with the comment there should be consistency to food and not a possibility of serving a bad meal. Understand this was lacking in all areas. e.g. sand in the shells, shells just tossed in the dish, no non shelled clams which were historically in the meal,no bread or butter that was served in the past, etc. As one person said the proper response by the person receiving our call back would have been to call the Manager who would ask that we bring the meal back as opposed to a desire to get us off the phone. Just felt it was appropriate to respond to the comments sent in regarding my original note. :icon_hungry:

Have eaten at Red Sauce many times and have not had a bad meal

Bogie Shooter 01-25-2018 10:03 AM

What again was the reason you did not take the meals back?

PennBF 01-25-2018 12:59 PM

Response to "Reason"

It's a fair question as to why I did not take the meal back. I spent 15-20 minutes driving to the restaurant and another 15-20 to go home where I opened the container that had the meal. I did call the restaurant and the lady who answered had me wait while some man came to the phone. I explained the problem. He had little interest in the quality that I received (see a previous note) and said he would speak to the server for not including bread and butter which was the lesser of two evils. Why would I waste another 1/2 hour or so to go back when it was clear they had little interest in my concern. I spent $21 for a bad meal and service and it did not make good sense to invest more time and money in a lost cause. It remains we will probably not go back to Red Sauce and also hope they clean their act up!!!:ohdear:

Sand in the clams to me is like nails on a chalkboard...just can't stand the feeling on my teeth! My Mother always said it reminded her of the beach and didn't mind too much! Gross!

Miles42 01-26-2018 11:46 PM

I dont do take out there , But have eaten there and always had great food.

Jdmiata 02-08-2018 05:27 PM

Went to red sauce last night . First time in over a year. Same problem as I’ve always had there.......the red sauce. Way too spicy , not smooth and ever so slightly sweet. Not the sauce I grew up with in an Italian family from the East . I have tasted tomato sauces in many Italian restaurants and homes from coast to coast. Never one like this.
On the other hand the service , atmosphere and the bread were good.
I will go there again , but no red sauce for me.

Carla B 02-09-2018 12:31 PM

What do you think of Carrabbas' red sauce? I imagine their version may be too spicy, too, since it came from an Italian family by way of Texas.

Chatbrat 02-09-2018 01:31 PM

none of them are close to a real good "gravy"

PennBF 02-09-2018 08:48 PM

A good Italian meal

After not going there in quite some time I called and ordered a meal out at Giovanni's and it was a pleasant surprise.. The meal was excellant, it was not spicey, it was ready when I went to pick it up! Since then I have ordered meals out 3 more times and each time they were great. I would really suggest it to my friends.:mmmm:

simpkinp 02-09-2018 09:53 PM

It’s a matter of taste. My complaint is that most restaurants serve bland food. I love spice and I have to add it to most restaurant foods. My buddy is Cayenne Pepper.

I enjoy eating our meals at home too. AND really like to cook and we eat at home most of the time. We had a nice take out dinner last night from Bob Evans; Grilled chicken breasts, mashed potatoes and gravy and cole slaw. Comforting and hot and tender and yummy. LOVE their cole slaw and hate cole slaw from other sources.

I am German descent from Ohio, so the first I knew Italians argued about southern or northern "gravy" was three years ago. I do admit to loving Italian food and we really like Carrabbas.

We will try Giovanni's take out. Thank you for the recommendation. What did you select?

Choices

We ordered Chicken Cutlet's, and Carbonerra, both with angel hair pasta. One of the things I like the most is that the sauce seems more like good italian basic sauce. It is not loaded with spice and is not hot. We have spent a lot of time in Italy including renting villa's in Tuscuny and a number of other places and never had "hot" sauce pasta, etc. If you ask the waiter in the villages if it has a lot of spice they will say no which is a "young person's" idea of Italian sauce while it is has a lot of spice. Giovanni's is the first place we have found it is not loaded with spice. You may also want to try their "Italian Cookies":icon_hungry:

That sounds good. Things can get too spicy for me easily.

Giovanni’s is really good. Try the linguine with clam sauce. Only wish it was more like a restaurant than a coffee shop.
