Driving school for elders
 

I would love a driving refresher course ... I'm 66 .. any ideas of where to go?

I don't really care but today must have been our day in the barrel. Driving around the general vicinity was outrageous today. Observing it and not getting hurt is free entertainment. Whatever, it will never change.

Having 6 eyes would make driving here a little less stressful. Order of the day is, watch out for everybody.

Of all the roads I've driven in my life I've never understood how some drivers as old as they may be how they survived this long running a stop sign, turning right while without looking left in their turn. I've observed that about 90% of the drivers doing this are in their 80's or above.

At least you didn't say they were women.

Which may be true.

I think they are folks from the city who never owned a car.

Driving up St. Charles today in my cart (yes, I was in the diamond lane), a senior citizen in a baby Buick SUV pulled out in front of me and I get the finger for honking my horn. Someday........

i simple request turns into bashing others. such is the way here. triple a may be your best answer

Everyone who posts on TOTV are perfect drivers who never speed, stop at signs, use turn signals etc

An amazing coincidence that all the bad drivers do not post here. It's the other guys. Or gals.

Drive north and south on Buena Vista and/or Morse Blvd during season and if you make it without cursing, using your second finger, horn, yelling at the other driver or having your automobile bent, you passed any driving class offered anywhere... :thumbup:

AARP classes are great! They also offer it online, and I learned a lot from it. By taking (and passing the test) them, you will get discounts on your insurance premiums.

One of the things I learned that it can be very difficult for an elder to turn his neck to see what was behind the car. Hence they tend not to bother to turn their necks, hoping nothing would happen.

At 66, you're a kid compared to many on the roads in TV. But perhaps you'll want to take a defensive driving course to learn how to avoid getting tangled up with the super, super seniors that can't hardly walk, don't see well at night, but still drive.

I was there this morning and saw a notice for a class this month. I think it cost twenty bucks.

Edit...being somewhat of a grammar cop, I just realized my post implies that the notice cost twenty bucks. Of course, I meant that is the cost of the class.

Kudos to you for even admitting...that you could use a refresher course. :thumbup:


My totally unscientific observation, is that probably 60%-70% of drivers around here (both autos & carts)...could benefit greatly from the same thing.


And yet, maybe only 2%...will admit it. :oops:

I’m only half joking, the older you get the smaller your car should be. It happened with my father, the older he got the bigger his car got. By the end he was driving huge Lincoln land yachts. He was terrible driving them as his skills diminished. Too many super seniors driving way to big of a vehicle.

The elder senior citizens tend to be overweight so they find the bigger cars to be more comfortable or easier to get in and out. Also they feel they have a smaller chance of getting killed. If I had to be in an accident, I would hope I were in a big car rather than a mini-Cooper, no matter how much I may love them.

When I had a hip replacement surgery, I had to give up my beloved Jeep Wrangler.

We are new to TV ... closing on a house in April. I am 66 and have no illusions about getting older ... (well, only a few) ... I'll be checking in on AAA's driver course when we get there in a few weeks ... Definitely, Villages driving poses unique challenges! Thank you for the good advice.

I took the AAA driving refresher and it was worth 5% off my car insurance (State Farm)! When husband takes it, we'll net another 5% off! Good deal!

I recently took driving lessons at a place called All Florida Safety Institute and I actually enjoy driving now instead of dreading it like I used to. They even taught me how to drive manual transmission and gave me some great tips. Driving lessons aren't just for youngsters!

Just took some lessons at All Florida Safety Institute and loved every second of it! They were patient with me and taught me how to be more confident.

More important than any class is to get a vehicle with as much safety features as possible, auto lane keeping, blind side monitoring, diatonic ( this is what MB calls auto distance and stopping when using cruise control)

Basically get a car to protect you self and others

If I had to get a driver's license based on my ability to parallel park well. . .let's say I wouldn't be living in the suburbs with few public transit options.

In the old days-when you were tested in NYC--if you touched the curb when parallel parking--you failed--time for a retest

Same in PA and Ohio. Plus you had to be less than 12 inches of the curb.

If the suggestion is for senior driving school to help teach seniors to adopt to safer driving, as we all inevitably age, it would probably be popular. However, Seniors tend to be very afraid of anything that evaluates ones driving skills, with any kind of course pass or fail grade, for the fear of having their license revoked. That would be a life changing event that most seniors fear.

Does the class offer a 2nd major in "how to turn off (or turn on) ones turn-signals" with a minor in golf-cart? ;)

As I read any of these threads I don't recall a single post where someone said HEY I WAS WRONG.

In days of old, it used ot pay to take the NY safe driving course. If I recall we would save like 10% on our compreh4nsive insurance and it would last for like three years so it was a great saving. The course was taught by retired police officers and was always interesting. AND ALSO SCARY AS TO WHAT SOME PEOPLE THINK IS OK.

As polite as I can be, WE HAVE SOME TRULY INTERESTING DRIVERS AROUND HERE.

I've found the back-up camera view has taken most of the guess work out of parallel parking. Just follow the projected yellow curve line and then straighten as you need.

Our car self parks, front and rear warning you are parking to close, has backup cameras, self breaks for pedestrians, warns a car is moving into my lane, warns you if I do not stay in my lane, and steering wheel gently brings you back to lane. Auto breaking system for front collision.
I am pretty much protected from doing damage to you, sadly I have zero protection from those who do not have the ability to make quick and safe decisions, while driving. I did have an hour of lessons on how to use all of the cars features, and stayed in a Holiday Inn.
