Yard ornaments and junk

How can it be that yard ornaments are wisely not allowed, but yet an owner can have an entire yard chock full of about 50 different, scroungy cactus plants that look like a big junkyard??

Why are neighbors and guests made to look at such an eyesore, right on the street and sidewalk? It’s a community embarrassment!

I know exactly the property you are talking about. It is a backyard which faces a busy street. This backyard has had these cactus plants for a few years.

So then...either:
a) nobody has complained to ARC; or
B) this is acceptable after complaints were made?

BobnBev 02-28-2018 08:57 PM

I'll vote for "B". Looks kinda like the Southwest, kinda neat.:coolsmiley:

golf2140 02-28-2018 09:25 PM

The one on Odel. It looks like crap.

N44125 03-01-2018 05:44 AM

I think it’s exempt since it’s the home’s backyard. I agree, looks terrible.

stan the man 03-01-2018 07:30 AM

I love the look, reminds me of Arizona

So....Arizona looks like an eyesore and a junkyard, and that’s how TV should be also?!?

JSR22 03-01-2018 09:11 AM

I live near the house with the cactus and I like it. I think all the different cactus are interesting and I like the containers.

Cedwards38 03-01-2018 09:14 AM

"Eyesore" is in the eye of the beholder. I don't think you can complain about cactus. You might complain if they are not being kept well.

It’s not that they are cacti. It’s the cluttered messiness and brownness of so many.

Retiring 03-01-2018 11:14 AM

I’ve had a home in Scottsdale since 2003. The last thing my neighbors or I would install is a cactus. They are a scorpion, tarantula and insect hotel. Cactus is what builders put in for the snowbirds that don’t know any better. Like putting a palm tree up against the house. A Floridian knows that’s a rat ladder, a snowbird learns that the hard way.

Personally, I don't like it but I never complained to anyone. Just observed the landscape and think it is very out of place here in Florida.

Definitely a prickly subject. :D

Jdmiata 03-01-2018 07:29 PM

I like it. A little variety.

kcrazorbackfan 03-01-2018 09:29 PM

I pass it quite often whenever I take another route to the Colony area. IMHO, I like the looks of it.

Looks better than some of the crap-brown lawns that people seem to be content with.

manaboutown 03-01-2018 10:14 PM

This is a thorny issue, perhaps even prickly, but it seems the subject landscaping is incongruous with adjoining terrain.

Thank You.

ricthemic 03-02-2018 02:57 AM

I think the reason the entire yard is covered with the cactus is to be cost saving maintenance free.. Sort of like replacing all the grass with river Rock which I believe that type of house is not allowed to do.

ricthemic 03-02-2018 02:58 AM

And IMO, it does look totally ridiculous

I don't think plants are considered lawn ornaments? Plus I don't backyards are as restrictive as front yard. I don't care for cactuses, unless their pipe organs. if you've ever been to SW some castus are impressive. , so each their own. One thing if you don't like it just look the other way.

salpal 03-02-2018 07:04 AM

I agree that it is eyesore and I pass it daily. I have often thought that no burglar would dare to tramp through that mess. I know that above 466 folks can have lawn ornaments. The one that drives me crazy is the giant blue angel on Del Mar and Panama, just before Spanish Springs.

Chatbrat 03-02-2018 07:06 AM

Best one is the Dalmation starring at a hydrant also on Delmar

Jim 9922 03-02-2018 08:54 AM

It is all in the eyes of the beholder. Consider the junk vehicles, rusty gas pumps and "farm equipment", bronze cows, derelict and half swamped boats, "genuine" phony "historical" placards, and artificially faded signs and "advertising" posters strewn around our town squares.

biker1 03-02-2018 08:56 AM

And you paid for all of that stuff. New old stuff is not cheap ;-)

Sorry, but I disagree completely. I think it’s quite beautiful with an interesting variety of types of cacti.

Because you can not regulate taste and opinion with rules.

You consider those eyesores? Wow

autumnspring 03-02-2018 10:51 AM

Wow

Do you people really want to start this?

You object to his/her/it's cactus THAT IS ON THEIR PROPERTY. Perhaps, they object to your dog, your parties,
your golf cart, your trash bags, your swimming pool, your motocycle, or whatever.

THINK.

Luckily in my neighborhood people are nice but I have heard many stories of people who were not.

Not eyesores. My point is the beauty is personal opinion. Some people like fire hydrant dogs, or pink flamingos or painted driveways with Mickey Mouse in the center, or cactuses in their yard garden. If it is not too obnoxious, live and let live and find your vision of beauty elsewhere.

lafoto 03-02-2018 04:37 PM

I cant stand folks who haven't looked in the mirror.
You are ugly for saying such things about your neighbor.
So judgmental, so self righteous, such conceded snobs.
Walk in their shoes, why dont you.
live and let live.....rant over

We are all entitled to our opinion.

thelegges 03-02-2018 06:43 PM

The house few doors down from the cactus yard stayed on the market for awhile compared to 5 other houses in same price range farther down the street. The cactus yard backs up to Odell Circle, most houses were built in 08 and 09 on that street. At the time I am sure it was approved by someone since the percentage of grass is only about 10%.

There are a few houses in that area painted in approved colors mid 2017, but in October 2017 those colors have been removed from the approval color chart.
