splashes 03-29-2018 01:55 PM

Pdq in colony plaza next to mcdonald

starflyte1 03-29-2018 01:56 PM

IMHO, Publix, McCalls and Metro Diner, at this time, but am still looking. I wish I could find a really good place that I liked that cooks chicken like the restaurants used to many years ago.

Ronnie Bear 03-29-2018 02:20 PM

Tkx,,,will try a few out,,,

Publix without a doubt. I'm qualified to answer, trust me.

bagboy 03-29-2018 02:40 PM

McCall's at Spanish Springs Lanes is good.

Rapscallion St Croix 03-29-2018 02:49 PM

In the absence of a Piggly Wiggly, the best fried chicken is always going to be at some little gas station. I can attest to the yummyness of the fried chicken livers at the gas station at the crossroads in Pedro.

If you're down in the Sarasota area, there are a handful of Amish restaurants that don't exactly fry chicken "southern" style, but they do make very, very good fried chicken. Yoders and Der Dutchman come to mind (as I've eaten at both in the last week!).

Big Der Dutchman fan! McCalls is excellent IMO.

McCall's Tavern in Spanish Springs. They tell you when you order it to be patient and that it takes 25 mins.

DonH57 03-29-2018 04:30 PM

Definately McCall's is the best fried chicken worth the wait.

villagetinker 03-29-2018 05:29 PM

Another vote for McCall's.

Mleeja 03-29-2018 05:42 PM

McCall’s here also. Order with your drink order to cut down the wait time. It is worth the extra few minutes!

rustyp 03-29-2018 06:06 PM

I believe the secret to McCall's chicken is the pressure fryer. I was told they have one of these ancient devices. Day of old many a diner had this device that looked like a stainless steel cooler with a big ships wheel on top. The chicken is fried under pressure. Crisp on the outside juicy on the inside. Anyone else remember these monstrosities ?

Chi-Town 03-29-2018 06:09 PM

McCall's and Metro Diner. 1and 2. No #3

Used to be you ordered wings by how hot you want them. Now they have 36 flavors and with the exception of pineapple thay all sound good.
We had a block party I ran one time. Maybe it will work for you. I signed up for the Eisenhower pavilion so we could play games. I collected money and Publix sold me 100 wings at a great price. I forget what it was. I made biscuits and neighbors brought beans, salad and dessert. I brought a dart board made out of Masonite set up to play baseball. It was a lot of fun and hardly any work or clean up. A lot of people brought home left over wings too. We don't eat like teenagers anymore.

There was a restaurant in the town I grew up in that cooked their chicken the same way. The first time we tried McCall's really reminded me of the place. I love my yard bird.

vinricci 03-29-2018 07:47 PM

Sorry, but my wife and I thought McCall's fried chicken was very salty. Might give one more try.

JoMar 03-29-2018 07:56 PM

Another vote for McCall's :)

Pat Reilly 03-29-2018 08:05 PM

Mc Calls is the best..

No need to be sorry, no place suits everyone's taste.

leftyf 03-30-2018 08:28 AM

Cracker Barrel is my favorite

Carla B 03-30-2018 08:59 AM

I can't pass up a Popeye's. Happy there's one nearby but not on campus. Too much of a temptation.

True about Popeye's. It would be hard to pass by with the drive up window calling you. The full name is Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen. Had the best fried chicken of my life in New Orleans.

I prefer Popeye's to McCalls.

Vladimir 03-30-2018 11:13 AM

Will have to try Mccalls but Maryland Fried Chicken on rt 27 in Leesburg is really good. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside and not greasy or fatty. Take out 8 piece chicken for $9

Two Bills 03-30-2018 11:19 AM

thetruth 03-30-2018 11:36 AM

I too like popeye's

Truth. for better or worse, we all seem to crave fried foods.
I don't think I've ever had bad fried chicken.

Both winn dixie and publix have a standard sized chicken fried by a timer so there is no chance of it being under cooked.
Winn dixie uses far smaller chickens but still far larger than the tiny chickens served at Popeye. Publixs fried a really large meaty chicken and so will be and should be more expensive..

How to read a chicken. If, you see a brown black area at the joints you know it has been frozen; ,pst likely it will be tougher and dryer.

thetruth 03-30-2018 11:38 AM

Beware

I've heard that Maryland Fried Chicken is really good. Someday we will try it but it is right across the street from Popeye's (hard to pass up). KFC is also next door to Maryland Fried Chicken but that's not hard to pass.

TheVillageChicken 03-30-2018 02:44 PM

This barbaric practice must stop.

Golden Corral has the best fried chicken (bone in) in The Villages hands down. We have tried them all... McCalls, Publix, Winn Dixie, PDQ, Demshars, Mallory CC.

Carla B 03-30-2018 04:53 PM

This is an upbeat thread - it's not the downer like the various pizza threads, as in "Who Has the Best Pizza in The Villages" followed by "There is no good pizza in The Villages, it's not like New York pizza or Chicago pizza, etc. etc."

kstew43 03-30-2018 05:31 PM

Publix 20 pieces wings for $10......can't go wrong
