Who watches Major League Baseball

After years of not watching MLB I decided to come back and try this year from the start. You know really get into it. Since I am in Florida now and trying to break the mold of your old home town is the favorite I picked Tampa Bay Rays. I gave it three innings. Probably the grossest thing I've seen on television in years. I timed it. In five minutes I seen 10 exhibitions of spitting in HD. One was inside the dugout. My choice is not to watch and that is my choice. I didn't count the amount of testicle tugging although not as much as projectile saliva heaving that I observed. How do you fans watch this stuff without getting queasy ?

karostay 03-31-2018 06:43 PM

I don't watch or support in any of the so called professorial team sports ending with Ball
College different story

manaboutown 03-31-2018 06:58 PM

The hundreds of HD spitting events in any major league baseball game literally turns my stomach. The fields and dirt must be saturated by spittle from the years of it occurring. I imagine it started with the tobacco chaw and gum chewing so prevalent in baseball

I am watching the Tampa Bay - Boston Red Sox game right now. I notice in the Sox dugout three one gallon or so size barrels full of Dubble Bubble chewing gum!

CWGUY 03-31-2018 08:27 PM

:ohdear: Spitting? Bubble Gum? Professional Testicle Tugging? :faint:

I sure am glad my T.V. came with a power button!

Well, as far as baseball-the game.... I simply cannot watch that sport for too long anymore. sloooooooooow. The nation's pastime is simply way too slow and way too long. The old 'watching paint dry' is so true. And with many pro sports now - I tend to not get into watching multimillionaires playing a game and still complaining. done.

Nucky 03-31-2018 11:17 PM

As long as they are standing when its important to me before the game they can carry on as necessary. My dad used to say leave it alone it will grow. About a million jokes are going through my mind I better conclude now.

CFrance 04-01-2018 12:59 AM

I love baseball. Love it. I even love watching pitching duels. I also love watching my home team who, unfortunately, rarely had a winning season in the last quarter century. (There's always a new year.)

I love every technical thing about the game, plus the fact that it's on almost every day. I just ignore the spitting and the tugging. I actually don't see too much tugging anymore, so that piece of sports equipment must have gotten better design down through the years. I could do without the spitting, but it doesn't keep me from enjoying the sport.

To each his own.

Rapscallion St Croix 04-01-2018 08:44 AM

Do not watch MLB. I watch college baseball once the CWS starts. I watch college softball all season long, through the regionals and CWS.. during regular season, I only watch SEC teams.

2BNTV 04-01-2018 09:56 AM

Only if the Yankees are playing but this thread isn't about sports watching, it's more about what players do between pitches. IMHO

If one is a Tampa Rays fan, Dish covers almost all of their games on channel 412.

Kenswing 04-01-2018 10:06 AM

Spitting doesn't bother me too much. It's the "snot rockets" that gross me out.. Then they wipe the remnants on their sleeves.. barf

The between pitches thing is why I stopped watching years ago. It must be 90% of the time it takes to play a game. Nothing has changed except the size and clarity of my TV screen.
I settle down in front of my 60 inch HD beauty in my man cave. Got a bowl of ice cream with maple syrup on top. Can't get better than this (at my age).
Picture gets ball and fiddles with it in his glove. Camera zooms in but my new TV amazes me, I can count the stitches on the threads. Picture stares at catcher. Shakes head, no. Pitcher looks to first base, stare down. Pitcher looks back at catcher. Fiddles ball inside glove again. Looks like we are going to do it. No pitcher throws ball to first base. Now pitcher keeps touching brim of hat before starting the whole routine again. Here it comes again but wait pitcher seems to be stalling a bit more than normal and the batter steps out of the box. My TV working perfect I can even count the whiskers on the batters three day old unshaven face. Batter steps back in box, umpire motions for pitcher to throw in ball for examination. Umpire looks at something gives ball to catcher to throw back to pitcher. Routine starts again. Looking good. Pitcher stares at ground with a TV camera closeup and there it is - he curls his tongue up and heaves a honker so vivid it appears to be in 3D with a force that could knock a buzzard off a s--t wagon at 100 ft. Totally ruined my ice cream sundae. Pitch was wide outside. Let's do it again. I switched to the golf channel.

justjim 04-01-2018 02:54 PM

I watch the game and enjoy it between sips of my beverage and snacks. It don’t get much better except an occasional trip (After the monthly check comes) to the ballpark for a hot dog and cold beverage. PLAY BALL!

Cedwards38 04-01-2018 05:43 PM

I love it, and watch every day. I wish spitting were the most obnoxious thing I watch on television. Ever check out the nightly news?

Fredman 04-02-2018 09:49 AM

]Buccos are 3-0! A good start. (We always seem to do well against Detroit.)

sallybowron 04-03-2018 02:11 AM

I like MLB and we watch it often. I was told by the high school boys I taught that the reason they spit is that the dust from the field gets in their mouths and they need to get it out. They also chew bubble gum to help them focus and it creates a lot of saliva. They also told me about the testicle tugging but I am too much a lady to address that in public. I was a bit embarrassed when they shared it with me, but I must say it did make sense. I just look away.

Timothy 04-03-2018 08:02 AM

Funny how this thread about baseball has evolved from spitting and jewel-tugging to the game being boring to watch. Especially considering we are in the capital of what many consider the most boring spectator sport on earth -- GOLF! Don't get me wrong -- I love playing golf (not any good at it but I love it). When it comes to watching sports not playing them, it's all about having something to root for -- a team....a player.....a country. Watching some guy you don't care about walk around a green lining up a putt is like watching someone figure out their next chess move. BUT if you are rooting for him/her it is exciting! Same with baseball...despite the occasional lack of manners. So support and root or find something else to complain about.

Agree. I like to watch both sports, so this is just an observation...

At least in golf, the broadcast can switch between numerous golfers and holes for current "action". As baseball drags along, there is no alternative to the "action" currently on the screen.

redwitch 04-03-2018 08:19 AM

I love live baseball (football the exact opposite). On tv, not so much. Yes, it is a slow game but those seconds of a great catch or a triple play make up for it. As Sally explained, there is a reason for the spitting. Not the greatest thing to see but it’s part of the game. So is the pitcher stall. There is a beauty to baseball that the fast-action games can never meet.

As to college ball over the pros — why? Collegiate athletes are semi-pros at the very least. Few get an education and their scholarships are an insult to those with scholastic scholarships. The schools make big money off their student athletes. At least the pros are honest about the money they get.

tomwed 04-03-2018 08:46 AM

The NFL’s popularity is all the more remarkable when you inspect the fare it has to offer each week on television. An average professional football game lasts 3 hours and 12 minutes, but if you tally up the time when the ball is actually in play, the action amounts to a mere 11 minutes.

I could not find the same information pertaining to baseball.

I seem to recall a golf swing is a second and a half. So with a par of 72 and assuming no practice swings that's less then 2 minutes of action.

Come on, tom. Your premise doesn’t hold up for golf. How about time the ball is in the air and bouncing around? Much more than a-second-and-a-half of action per swing. And the fact that there are dozens of players, not just one. A broadcast can easily have player shots on the screen almost continuously. Not so for baseball and football.

And I repeat, I like watching baseball and football...and golf. :)

Polar Bear 04-03-2018 09:49 AM

Might as well throw basketball into the mix...

I rarely watch basketball on TV. College is tolerable. Pros not so much. (Non-contact sport!?! Right!!) And just for the record, I played college basketball.

I think basketball suffers from one major thing compared to any other major sport...no single play early in the game really makes that much difference in the outcome of the game. You could see the greatest spinning, twisting, slam-dunking move in the history of basketball early in the game and yes...it's great to watch the athleticism. But did it really, dramatically impact the outcome of the game? Not really. Even if the game ends up close, you won't look back and say that move won the game. It was just another basket.

But in baseball or football, a 1st inning home run might be the only run of the game. And if the game ends 1-0, that home run hitter is the hero of the game. Or if an opening kickoff is returned for a touchdown, or there is a long, spectacular touchdown run or pass in the first quarter, and the games ends up a low scoring battle, maybe 10-7 or something like that...that play will be looked at as the deciding play of the game.

You never know when the "big play" is going to happen in football or baseball. In basketball, the "big play" can't happen until the clock is winding down near the end of the game.

I worded my thoughts incorrectly.

I should have said when someone plays golf and shoots 72 they are swinging the club, exercise?, for around 2 minutes.

I enjoy watching golf on TV, just like my dad. He took it more seriously. When Jack or Arnie was putting, as kids, we had to whisper in front of the TV.

Heheh. I remember reading once...I can't provide any specifics or backing for this, I just thought it was funny and probably accurate in its own way...that a person would pass out VERY QUICKLY if they maintained the level of exertion of the moment of impact of the golf club hitting the ball. The exertion is greater than experienced in almost any sport for just that micro-second! :D

Boy, did I crack up reading this. He’s watching the game so a kid shouting certainly wouldn’t interfere with the viewing. Neither Jack nor Arnie could hear the kid noise through the tv. So, I guess you guys had to whisper because the announcer whispered. Ah, the idiosyncrasies of the sports fan.

I remember a friend telling me that she told her husband that her water had broken. He told her to wait until after the 9ers won the game (it. was. the. first. quarter.). Being the lovely soul she is, she took the remote, turned off the tv, held her husband’s head between her hands and repeated through clenched teeth, “Dear, my. water. broke.” Amazingly, they’re still married.

Great thing about these true to life, gigantic, HD, LED, 4K, OLED, Plasma, LCD, etc. televisions..... They all come with a remote control right in the box. And if you can figure out how to properly install the batteries in the remote, you can probably grasp the concept of changing channels or turning it off. That would save you the time of going online and complaining about what you were so painfully forced to endure on the screen.

Excellent point - I've also discovered the on/off button on my computer.

What's even worse is my team, the Orioles, they haven't played this bad since 1988. I hope they don't fire Buck Showalter, he's a great coach and have made them a decent team the last few years even when they don't spend the money. When you have the Yankees, the Red Sox and the Blue Jays in your division, it's not easy. The good thing right now is the hockey playoffs, my two favorites the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Washington Capitols are both still going good.

If the Red Sox are playing then I am watching, but I wish they would institute a pitch clock. Baseball is much more fun to watch when two fast working pitchers are playing (Chris Sale is a great example) The last couple of weeks I have not been able to find much the time to watch the Sox with either the Celtics or Bruins having a playoff game almost every day.

I rarely see anybody scratching their crouch [sic] anymore. The pitching coaches are now limited to the number of times they can come out to the mound. Some measures have been taken to speed the game up. But I think the time limit thing bombed.

You either love the game or you don't. I personally love the mechanics of the game, the fact that the ball remains in the hands of one team for a specific period of time (unlike soccer & hockey where it's constantly changing sides), and the color guys are interesting to listen to as they fill you in on the whys and wherefores of certain pitches and plays.

There really is a lot of cerebral, strategic element to the game. It's one of two team sports where I enjoy the sport itself so much I will watch any team playing.
Now... bring on the French Open!

Isn't it the Greatest when The Red Sox Play The Jankees! Life is good. I'm with you, I'll watch any game. Scratch away! You have to be looking for it to really notice it. They are not itchy their nervous.:clap2:
