Hawaii volcano shoots lava into sky; evacuations ordered

Quote:

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted Thursday, sending lava shooting into the air in a residential neighborhood and prompting mandatory evacuation orders for nearby homes.

Hawaii County said steam and lava poured out of a crack in Leilani Estates, which is near the town of Pahoa on the Big Island.

I have a friend who is currently on the Big Island vacationing and playing golf, but since he's basically on the other side of the island (Kailua-Kona area)...hopefully he will not have any issues.

fw102807 05-04-2018 06:55 AM

I read that they had many earthquakes prior to the eruption. Very unstable area right now.

valuemkt 05-04-2018 07:59 AM

I'll be there in less than a month .. If you get any feedback from your friend, pls let me know .. thanks

Wow. If it’s not sinkholes, it’s lava. I guess every place has its challenges.

What is sulfur dioxide? Residents warned of exposure after Hawaii volcano eruption - CBS News
Quote:

Hawaii's most active volcano, Kilauea, is erupting with a fury, and dangerous levels of sulfur dioxide gas are being reported. Molten lava and ash were thrown hundreds of feet into the air and onto the streets of the mountainside community near Hilo, and residents under a mandatory evacuation tried to outrun the volcano's flow.

The eruption started after hundreds of small quakes hit the area earlier in the week. Residents began documenting the growing cracks on the streets in front of their house.

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit on Thursday and the volcano began to erupt shortly after that. Lava could be seen bubbling up on the streets in the community of Leilani Estates, 25 miles east of the volcano. Drone footage showed two houses on fire and a red line of lava snaking through trees several miles away.

Residents on the Big Island are now being warned about the exposure to high levels of sulfur dioxide from the lava, a gas that can cause intense coughing and burning throats. Volcano expert Paul Davis says the gas occurs during the melting process.

Hope it stays that way for you.

Although I've since come to appreciate Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park...I'll never forget my first flight from Oahu to the Big Island.

We were mostly in the clouds going over and as we broke through the bottom of them to land, our first peek outside the window...looked like a moonscape! :22yikes:

Thinking back, I believe the pilot had a script because you could hear the audible gasp of the passengers who had become used to the lushness of the vegetation and beautiful beaches on Oahu...and are now looking at basically nothing but cooled lava and a barren volcanic landscape.

His comment included... "the stark beauty of the lava fields."

Great marketing! :D

It looks like things are still active.

Hawaii volcano destroys 21 homes, spews lava 200 feet in air
Quote:

The number of homes destroyed by Hawaii's Kilauea volcano jumped to 21 Sunday as scientists reported lava spewing more than 200 feet (61 meters) into the air.

Some of the more than 1,700 people who evacuated prepared for the possibility they may not return for quite some time.

Hawaii officials said the decimated homes were in the Leilani Estates subdivision, where molten rock, toxic gas and steam have been bursting through openings in the ground created by the volcano. Officials updated the number of lost homes after an aerial survey of the subdivision.

"That number could change," Hawaii County spokeswoman Janet Snyder said. "This is heartbreaking."

As of this morning, 26 homes, and incredible photos (from a drone?) showing red hot lava flowing through the housing development.

Any updates from the people in Hawaii? I know that the pictures look terrible but I also know that the media has a way to make it look much worse.

Yes very bad for the people involved but how big an area is this affecting and is it affecting any of the other islands? When we had the hurricane last year my friends up north thought the whole state was being blown away. Even the keys were not as badly affected as the media made it seem. Puerto Rico however was spot on.

Possible major eruption possible. :(

I couldn’t agree more. The media has made it sound like the whole place has a major issue. We just got back a couple of hours ago from the Big Island. We toured the whole island for 10 days and no issues at all except they were closing Volcanoes Natl. Park the day we visited there. I wouldn’t hesitate going to the island right now unless you really want
to see the active volcano and lava as that area is pretty much off limits. There are so many other beautiful spots to visit there that are perfectly safe.

ColdNoMore 05-12-2018 06:40 PM

While I realize that science and facts aren't in vogue these days with a certain demographic...this doesn't sound too good.

Let's hope it's just an abundance of caution...and not something that will happen.

The eruption of a Hawaii volcano in the Pacific "Ring of Fire" has experts warily eyeing volcanic peaks on America's West Coast that are also part of the geologically active region.

America's most dangerous volcanoes are all part of the Ring of Fire, and most are on the West Coast, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Besides Kilauea, they include: Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier in Washington; Mount Hood and South Sister in Oregon; and Mount Shasta and Lassen Volcanic Center in California.

I personally haven't seen any articles saying that... "the whole place has a major issue."

Do you by any chance have any links...where 'they' are saying such?

I do recall those who pooh-poohed the warnings regarding Mount St. Helens...and we all know how that turned out. :ohdear:

When St. Helens blew my brother was living in Olympia, WA. There was a blizzard of whitish ash drifts up there, as if a huge snowstorm had hit. At that time I was living in White Rock, NM and my yard received a light coat of light gray - almost white ash. I bottled some of it but forgot where I put the bottle. lol

My close friends have resided on the Big Island for almost two years now and want off for several reasons. They live near Kona and the Vog has been terrible there most of that time - nothing to do with Kilahuea's recent activity which has only affected them via two large earthquakes. It of course all depends on how the wind blows...

Mount St. Helen's ash made it all the way to NM? :22yikes:

Wow, I didn't realize that.

As for your friends on the Big Island, I also have two married couple friends that have retired...and have lived there for about 15 years.

So far, they say they're staying, but their Facebook posts indicate...that they are a bit nervous.

I mean after all, who wouldn't be a little nervous given that the whole island (all of the Hawaiian islands actually) are just the exposed peaks of a great undersea mountain range (Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain)...formed by volcanic activity.

And if you ever want to win a bet, ask someone what is the tallest mountain in the world...from base to summit.

Watch the look on their face, when you tell them that it's NOT Mt. Everest...but Mauna Kea on the Big Island. :D

manaboutown 05-12-2018 07:44 PM

Yep, those islands are the tips of volcanoes having bases in some of the deepest part of the Pacific.

BTW my friends made the mistake of buying into a condo complex of 87 units. Only 9 are owner occupied. The vast majority are Air bnb units. Their HOA is $1,200 a month! The Vog has really gotten bad in that area. It has been a nightmare.

My concern is that if that volcano really blows no one will be able to get out by air! Of airplanes and ash clouds: What we've learned since Eyjafjallajokull | EARTH Magazine

Living full-time, in basically a hotel with everyone else coming & going...would definitely suck. :(

As for the VOG, it is certainly a major concern..for my friends also.

Well, my friends are not bashful and are opportunistic. They regularly dumpster dive to obtain and cook some very expensive frozen protein such as abalone, lobster, steak and lamb chops which the tourists buy :mmmm: but don't get around to eating as they tend to survive on their 'bottled' groceries. They almost never find any booze ::wine: although from time to time someone will knock on their door with an unopened bottle. The complex gets trashed by the "guests" who are there to party at the pool, hot tub, beach and golf course. The renters also leave snorkeling gear, sunscreen, beach towels and flip flops behind which my friends take to Goodwill.

Hawaii issues warning for '''explosive eruption''' of volcano as 18th fissure opens

Quote:

An 18th fissure began spewing magma on Sunday as officials in Hawaii warned of the possibility for an "explosive eruption" as lava continues to withdraw from the summit lake at Kilauea.

manaboutown 05-14-2018 01:37 PM

Really, really scary!

"The new danger comes from the lava level that is dropping inside the volcano. If it falls below the water table, water will pour onto the lava, generating steam that will likely explode from the summit in a shower of rocks, ash and sulfur dioxide gases."

Hawaii volcano: 'Explosive eruption' at Kilauea summit spurs concerns
Quote:

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted from its summit early Thursday, shooting a huge plume of ash miles into the sky and prompting authorities to urge area residents to take cover.

The Hawaii Volcano Observatory said the explosion within Kilauea's Halemaumau crater -- the biggest since the volcano became more active on May 3 -- had produced a volcanic cloud that reached as high as 30,000 feet (9,000 meters) and was drifting downwind to the northeast.
