Hvac for lanai

Recently enclosed our lanai, looking for a good contractor to add climate control, will probably install mini-split. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Hey, Maynard! Want to help tear down the old Endicott building?

leftyf 06-02-2018 08:17 AM

We use the cheap portable AC unit from Sam's Club, $300.

How well does the portable unit work? Does it have a discharge for the water?

It's only 8,000 btu, but it works great and evaporates the water through the outside exhaust. I have mine mounted on a wood stand I built so the exhaust goes directly through a window vent without using the hose that comes with it.

Looks very nice too.

Just wondering how Zelda and Dobie are doing ?

missypie 06-03-2018 12:15 PM

Bought a Rollicool from Amazon. Wonderful! $500.00

Cools beautifully.

Nick2065 06-04-2018 05:08 AM

As a retired HVAC contractor, you just can’t throw a ductless mini split into your lanai. There are codes and laws especially in Sumter county. There are quality portable AC into that work great. Just purchased a few for friends through supply house. Straight cooling or heat pump. Do remember, these Lanai’s are not insulated. Whoever paid $4,800 got taken, that was an extremely high price.

HVAC for newly enclosed lanai

Unless your lanai is HUGE and has no attic over it, it seems to me that a contractor could simply add duct work from your existing system to handle the lanai. Installing a split system for just one room is very costly and would require a second outside unit and expensive electrical work.

R&A Industries installed my mini-split at much lower cost than SunKool.

I am very pleased with Tropic Air Solutions, Bruce Edwards owner of small business. 352-321-6656 or Tropicairsolutions@gmail.com

I would recommend Kalos Services. We put in the Mitsubish mini split and love it. 352-243-7088

I used Munns. It cost about $4000 for a Carrier unit.
I like it cause it is out of site. You are welcome to ck
out ours and see it in the Lanai.

Does this Mitsubishi unit also heat? if not, what recommendation would you have?

tmiller166 06-04-2018 08:43 AM

Depends on how big your lanai is and how much sun does it get. Mine is large and gets lots of PM sun. Have Mitsubishi "Mr. Slim" model, provides A/C and heat, very reliable, very quiet, not intrusive as it mounts near ceiling on wall. $4800 install, may be cheaper depending on size required. Call Munn"s for free quote.

Far and away, the best unit is the Mitsubishi. It is very quite and efficient. The best contractor (and also the best price by some margin) is DANIELS HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING, INC. 352-726-5845

Daniels Heat & Air. 352-726-5845. Get a Mitsubishi (best unit). For a cheaper price than a “also ran” competitor. I’ve referred several Villagers to them. All were very happy

James T. 06-04-2018 09:53 AM

Our portable unit ( Haier from HD) works much better after insulating ceiling and adding solar roof vent, and installing solar shades outside on west windows. Our unit also heats via heat pump, but needs to be drained when heating.

We have this and I have added R50 insulation above the lanai. It is a compromise approach. The previous owners installed it.

It helps, although you should have no delusions that the lanai will be the same temp as the main structure. Unless you leave the slider to the lanai open.

Byte1 06-04-2018 11:55 AM

If you have attic access to the lanai, you might want to try the less expensive idea of extending the existing vent from you central unit. Only cost me a few hundred bucks. Works great. That was in a home with a small 8x14ft lanai.

I also have a 9x20ft lanai that I do not think has attic access. I am going to try a 1200 btu portable, which should be overkill. It also has a dehumidifier and heat pump. It has a window vent adapter, but I am thinking of venting it via a dryer duct to the outside. While using it on A/C setting, it does not fill the small water tank, because it vents the water via the duct out the exhaust. Portable units are very inexpensive. Split units cost about as much as replacing your central unit, but work very well. In my opinion, split units are overpriced, even if they do work exceptional.

Twodogs 06-04-2018 06:20 PM

Check with your a/c contractor, it's possible they can run another trunk off the system itself if it has the capacity, we did. Very inexpensive in relation to the split.

What he say.... LOL

lorilorilori 06-04-2018 09:47 PM

I have 5 Misuibishis Wall units in my away home and one Carrier wall unit in my Village lanai. All Air - no heat. The mitsuibishi cost $2500 and had the electrician install for approx 800 a piece saving about 1700. The carrier was $4000 installed. If I had to do it over, I would have done the air + heat in my main home as we have no heat and use heaters. Both units are great and do an excellent job of keeping the homes cold - which the dogs love. I like the ease of cleaning the filters.

debbie vaccaro 06-06-2018 09:21 AM

Had the Split Mitsubishi unit installed in the lanai and the garage 4 years ago. Cost was about $7000. Works great. Love it.

Absolutely agree. Our Minisplit was installed by Daniels about 3 years ago. They did great work and the unit is just right (west facing lanai); no one else including Munn’s Included that factor when calculating the size of the unit we needed. Plus their pricing was better by thousands.

oxfordnative 06-11-2018 03:23 PM

We used Sumter Air and Heat, for a new indoor unit and then 2 years later for a mini- split in our porch that we enclosed. This was last year and cost was $2100. Great service, fast and not a single problem. Stays cool all summer.

We used M&S and they we great.
Had a Mitsubishi mini split that is capable of heating too.
Our unit is rated at 1.5 tons.
Works great.

Hello...Would you be willing to share who you used to run the new duct work to your lanai? My HVAC co is telling me I have the capacity with my existing system but would need a contractor to install and remove our lanai to hous slider. I don’t want to do that.

beachbaby 08-03-2018 10:17 PM

Lanai hvac

Doesn’t the hot air come in thru the window? Please post a picture of the unit and the stand.

kcrazorbackfan 10-04-2018 09:14 PM

Munn's installed ours today, $4,100 + change; saved about $500 with our Law Enforcement discount.

Call Rosalie Daniels @ 352-638-7025. I am picky and their installation crew did a fantastic job.

We did not have to remove our slider from the lanai to the house when we were going to run duct work to the lanai; we decided to go with the Mitsubishi mini-split system instead.

Dillywho, see my earlier post on first or second page.. You rang ? Work ?

papasetti82 10-05-2018 08:19 AM

Mine uses duct from existing system. Lanai is open to the living room If you want to see it let me know.
I had a whole system replaced in my last Villa for $5000.

Mary Kay 10-05-2018 08:55 AM
