I mailed a first class envelope within the same zip code and within a mile of post office to someone. Well the envelope has to travel 60 miles to Orlando just to come back here for delivery. You think they would see the address in the same postal area and deliver it. This is why they don’t make money and costs keep going up.

Imagine checking every envelope for zip code here (don’t think they would have a scanner) — the time, manpower, etc. Trucks going to/from Orlando do so at least twice daily. I imagine it is much more cost effective to have Orlando do the sorting rather than here. That is why they have distribution centers.

The sorting equipment is in Orlando.....not TV.
They consolidate all mail in Orlando......if they did not it would be days longer and cost even more. Hand sort for a specific zip code.

Just stop and think a while longer about that.

Think about your living room being filled from wall to wall and floor to ceiling and then being told to go get the pieces of mail from your zip code out of the pile!!!!!!!!

I believe The Villages is considered a rural postal area. Add a day is what I was told. The main thing is that the service here is quite good.

I recently tracked an email, sent to my brother across the dinner table. The tracer route told me it went to Europe and Asia before ending up here a couple of seconds later. I was trying to figure out if had gone through any satellites. Possibly.

In our experience it is better to bring a time sensitive pieces of mail to the Post Office instead of the slot where we pick up our mail. They know what they are doing moving the mail around. I can see how the OP would come to the conclusion that this is why money is being lost but this isn't the hole in the boat.

What's really puzzling is why it takes (sometimes) 10 days for a card to get from the midwest to here or vice-versa. THEN a different time it takes only 2 to 3 days. We mail accordingly, with the 10 day thing in mind!!!

I think the OP yearns for the good 'ole days. :)

Instead could send it UPS and it will probably go thru Georgia or FedEx and it would probably go thru Memphis..... both about 20 times the cost I would think.:shrug:

UPS might not be the best way. Funny (odd) story. On May 28th I ordered a prescription refill from a new mail-order pharmacy, paying extra for 2-day delivery. They shipped it UPS instead of USPS, and it got a tour of the southeast US. Kansas to Kentucky to Florida, then back to Kentucky, and a return the next day to Florida. Here's the screen shot of the shipment progress. So my 2-day delivery only took 4 days.

The reason the PO doesn't make money is because they're NOT ALLOWED TO BY THE FED GOV. If they make money the Gov. TAKES IT AWAY. Sending a letter is the cheapest thing in this country. That letter TRAVELS ALL over until it catches up with who it is supposed to get to. If the PO goes public, rural res. will NOT GET MAIL DELIVERED. The cost will sky rocket! I can send a pkg through the mail cheaper than UPS. UPS has varied charges depending on the market. PO is ONE SET PRICE THOUGH OUT THE US.

My mail box is jammed with my mail and package. They jam in small packages instead of putting it into the bigger box. I have spoke to them and have gotten no place with them

In February, I mailed a birthday card and gift to my daughter in a small, padded envelope, to Savannah, GA. It had to go "priority", so I had tracking...it got to Jacksonville, and disappeared. I complained, they looked for it, claimed they couldn't find it a week later! I complained again; they finally found it and she got it - TWO WEEKS LATE! I could have gotten it there myself in 5 hours.

I have a better one!
 

Ordered an item from Amazon, got shipment in two days...forgot I have a change of address on file since I’m from WI. So it went up north. I was home TEN days before it made it back up.
It’s a government thing!

Cursive handwriting. If you don't block print, there is no one in the letter sorting craft at the Lady Lake PO who can read it. They send that to a specialist in Orlando. Or so I have been told.

If it's a nearby zip code, try to just put the address you want it to go to as the 'return address'...then accidentally forget to put a stamp on it. :angel:

I agree. When I moved here 15, 16 years ago I was stunned that it could take 10 days for a birthday card to reach the Midwest and had a birth announcement from the Midwest take 15 DAYS from the date of the postmark to reach The V's. Over the years had to just relax and accept "it is what it is". I still get so tired of the number of letters I get in my pigeon hole box addressed to other people. The ads don't concern me so much but I have received what is obviously pension plan papers, IRS letters, and other mail which am sure are very important and possibly time sensitive. Lived in several states over many years and never had to carefully read the address on every piece of mail like one has to do here....but again, life is very short so why waste time "fighting" it. I do wish we had "real" USPS people handling our mail, not a guarantee of more professional work behavior of course, but I just go back to all those years before retirement without a single piece of mail belonging to neighbors put into our mailbox, and the timeliness of mail delivery. That's the "old days" I guess...LOL !

By this logic, doesn't it make sense to just take it where you want it sent and save the cost of the stamp? :laugh:

I place a 10 day hold yellow card to my Pinellas carrier and come back only to find all the mail is still jammed into that small slot anyway, why bother.

UPS service is supposed to be “service guaranteed”. If you paid extra for the two day service and it took four days, you are due a refund from UPS.

I mailed Easter gifs to our 2 grandchildren in Conn.
The Monday before for $15 2 day delivery
Should have arrived latest on Thursday .
Never made it Preceding Monday tracking code said they were in Puerto Rico .

Yes, especially since there are very few posts like the one described.

We have found that posting our mail at the Oxford Post Office is by far quicker regardless of the destination.

wherever there's a PO, there should be a sorting machine - it is not handsorted. And, yes, they do silly things that cost more money. I recently had a very non-essential package delivered on a Sunday! This was in June, not Christmas holiday stuff. It could have very easily waited one more day for our regular delivery rather than paying someone double time for Sunday.

As for delivery within TV, it really isn't rocket science: why not have a slot for TV zip codes and just send the mail to those PO's? I can't see how it would be cheaper to send all TV mail to Orlando and back again.

It seems to me a very significant piece of information is missing in the discussions.

What percent of the so called "TV mail" is for within TV only?

I would guess that the majority (greater than 80%) of the mail is for non villages destinations.

In my earlier post in this thread I suggested imagining your living room filled floor to ceiling and wall to wall with "mail". Now from that room full of mail sort out the 20% or less pieces destined for delivery in TV.

A point being overlooked or even minimized is the sheer volume of mail the postal system is designed to handle.
The system(s) are geared for volume.

When one stops to consider the millions/billions of pieces of mail from the millions of points of origination and the millions of points of destination, hourly/daily, it is truly remarkable what is actually accomplished.

And out of the millions and billions there will always be a very small percentage of isolated incidents.

I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania and there, as well as most of the other small towns in the area, there is a LOCAL mail slot for things going within the town. This would allow the local post office to simply sort that mail like they do mail coming in from the hubs. Seemed to work great at literally no extra cost.

Or you could have hand delivered it yourself in 15 minutes, but that is, of course, none of my business. :wave:

Putting your mail in someone’s home mailbox (if we had one) is actually illegal. Google it. Hand delivery is a great idea to me.

I understand where the OP is coming from but the way the mail is handled is necessary based on volume. I think someone’s name on this thread is Newman!

If we mail something where time is important we go to the Post Office on Teague Trail. Great results every time.

2-day service is 2 business days after the package is shipped.....therefore it arrived on time.

You mAy have ordered it on the 28th but, the pharmacy did not ship the order until the 30th so your 4 days is now down to 2. You never count the day shipped as time in transit...it is 2 business days after that so, your 2-day delivery was was delivered on time.

I remember a time when a Government contractor was the low bidder to build a concrete block building in a remote area in Alaska. None of the other contractors could figure out how to transport the concrete blocks to the area at a reasonable price. But, the successful contractor packaged each block in brown paper and sent them individually through the USPS.

Same here, I grew up in Ford City, Pa. and we had the same setup, local and out of town. These small town facilities handle a minimal amount of mail and employees have more time to sort. Coleman's (just south of Wildwood) Postoffice is closed during lunch hour, never heard of that before.
