Going gray
I have heard talk about going gray, by having hair colored somehow to hide the fact that you are growing out.
Has anyone had this done or know of a place that does it. I would think that any colorist could do it, but would prefer one with experience in this "reverse highlight" or what ever it is. Just want to see how gray I really am. It has been years since I have seen my natural color. |
I gave up fighting getting old years ago and let myself turn into a q-tip. At least not all the hairs are turning grey, just the ones that aren't falling out!

I am Blond and have the same problem of gray sneaking up on me. I was just going to ask if anyone here has been to Tou Lou Salon in Wildwood? I'm thinking of trying them, but would feel more comfortable if I heard reviews from someone who has been there!

My hairdresser told me that this is not a highly successful procedure and encouraged me to just let it grow out naturally. You can't really lighten hair that has already been colored. It really wasn't that bad and I am very happy with the results.

I have a few grey around my temples, I have highlights and low lights put in every 8 months or so. My family didn’t start graying until their health declined in their late 80s, and 90s. So here’s hoping I am on the same track.

Ditto! Too funny, as that was what I was exactly planning to do. Told my stylist that I wanted to see what my gray looks like, so instead of the normal color and highlight, just highlighted to start the “transition”. Cathy D. At Cal’s in Brownwood is who I go to. Time will tell.

Shoot, I wish I was going gray. Instead, I've been going pink for years. I've got myself a sizable solar collector on the top of my head that used to be hidden by hair. Oh, well. At least I'm not losing my hair. I figure for each hair that goes away on top of my head, another one grows out of my ear or on top of my feet or some other useless place!

I had a friend whose hairline was receding. He said it wasn't receding, just moving down his back.

My wife was a natural blonde then became a fake blonde then sucked it up and let it do what it was going to do. Vanity can be a cruel and expensive state and there are all kinds of companies that will take advantage of that. My wife said she would let it go gray, and if she couldn't handle it she could always go back. So far, she is staying the course and found a short hairstyle that compliments the gray and her desire to no longer "fuss" with her hair.

As my hair continues to thin I am going with the theory that grass can't grow on a busy path. And it seems that I am always the first to notice when it starts to rain. And since I always try to see the glass half full, a bottle of shampoo lasts practically forever, so I got that going for me. |
Sorry to gender crash this forum, but ladies, grey is half-stepping. White is where it's at.

Although I've let mine go gray, so far I've been lucky with the amount...and have even let it get long & bushy once in a while. Have had more than one person say to me.... "I just love those novelty visors with bushy gray hair." http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/MpgAAO...m7/s-l1600.jpg I love the look on their faces, when I take my visor off...and they see it's my own hair. :D Oops, just realized this is the women's forum. Oh well, I still think it's funny. :o |
Before you go grey you might want to see if grey is Board approved.

I had then try to lift the color at a salon when I started to go gray and was tied of the gray and brown look. Instead I ended up widget gray and orange. Bozo the clown was not the best look. It took about 3 months to light to blond. Finally was able to cut that off and now all gray.

Yes....this does work!!! |
I have been highlighting for years. But my hair grows so fast that it is costing me a fortune to keep my snow white roots covered.
But if I let my roots go longer than 4 weeks -- which is pushing it -- my hair would start to look like Friar Tuck's tonsure. (My hair is so white, if I let it grow in very far, from a distance, it looks like scalp.) Lately, I have been having the highlights brought up lighter and lighter so we will see where that goes. I bet I will have to always have some dimension with a darker color though or my face would just fade away. Here is an article I found which shows transitioning steps that worked. Sorry. Last post didn't come up. Hmmm.

Thanks, Boomer, interesting article! And pretty color, Graciegirl, lucky you! I think that I will have dark hair and gray, maybe not too pretty.
