Oatmeal - what kind and what do you add?

Until a year ago I hardly touched oatmeal.

Now I make enough for 3 days on the stove and nuke the leftovers. I like rolled oats and steel cut. I make 3 cups at a time and throw in 2 chopped apples and boil it until it's done. Before serving I add dried fruit [raisins, prunes].

I don't have a favorite brand or type yet. Do you?

I'm looking for other combinations.

I used to make it from the round cardboard box with the Quaker guy on the front. However, SOMEONE in our home who runs to the grocery store and is very helpful, has returned three times with the buy one get one free instant oatmeal. (Maybe four times) So I fix it with half and half. I like the dates and nuts, and the maple one, and the brown sugar. Sometimes I use skim milk to make it. That is usually the week just after I have been to the doctor for a checkup.

I used to collect those cardboard round containers to make drums for the Indians. In my classroom, right around Thanksgiving. I mean Native Americans.

I didn't know or maybe forgot you were a teacher. Back in the day the boxes were also used to make a radio. I made one with my dad but didn't make one with my kids. I wish I did you never know where that leads. What kind of interest gets sparked.

Another great starter project for kids is the Quaker Oats box set broadcast AM crystal radio. You use the cardboard cylinder of a Quaker Oats box for the wire coil. Download the free PDF free plans. They even give some useful science fair hints for this project.

Years ago I switched from Quaker Oats style oatmeal to Trader Joe’s steel cut oatmeal, the quick cook variety. I add some pieces of ginger and dried fruit such as blueberries and/or cherries from Costco. I use a combination of almond and coconut milk on it.

I never thought of ginger---thanks

marianne237 08-04-2018 11:24 AM

I add walnuts and dried cherries or cranberries, and sprinkle with cinnamon

Arctic Fox 08-04-2018 11:49 AM

To get oats to cook more quickly they have to be more finely cut, which is less beneficial to your digestive system, so go with "traditional" rather than the quick cook or instant

Cook the oats, adding fresh blueberries and cranberries very near the end

I also add flax seeds, chia seeds, cinnamon and turmeric (mixed with black pepper) before cooking, but it all adds time to the process

I love ginger, this is a great idea.

That is the beauty of oatmeal...so much can be added to it, and one can be so creative with it.

Fredman 08-04-2018 02:24 PM

Brown sugar and condensed milk. Like it sweet

jblum315 08-04-2018 02:26 PM

The instant oatmeal is tasty but it has lots more carbs (sugar mostly) than I think is healthy

Rapscallion St Croix 08-04-2018 03:43 PM

Quaker Oats with peanut butter and honey...every morning. Haven't had the egg/bacon/sausage/pancake deal for years. I eat grits, but not for breakfast.

jmvalcq 08-04-2018 06:32 PM

Oatmeal

I like baked oatmeal with frozen fruit. Leftovers are good too eith hot or cold. Also overnight oatmeal made with yogurt.

PJOHNS2654 08-04-2018 06:42 PM

Oatmeal

Bob's Red Mill Sottish Oatmeal. Add chopped dates and Speculoos Cookie Butter.:MOJE_whot:

Ecuadog 08-04-2018 06:49 PM

Bob's Red Mill Organic Steel Cut Oats are the best, IMHO. Their Muesli is great for breakfast too, especially if you're in a hurry. You can count on quality products from Bob's Red Mill.

The story behind Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods and its founder, Bob Moore, is an interesting one.

I prefer cream of wheat over oatmeal. I don’t want to highjack the thread, but anyone else like cream of wheat better than Oatmeal?

On my C.O.W. I prefer no fruit, however if I were to add fruit, I think I would add a smaller berry, like a blueberry or cranberry-raisin.

....

I haven't eaten farina since I was a kid, but I remember liking it better than oatmeal. IIRC, I ate it with a pat of butter and some sugar or maple syrup sprinkled on top. Then, there was Wheatena. That was my favorite hot cereal.

Try it the Scottish way. 1 cup oats. 2cups water. Add salt to taste.

Not a bad as it sounds!

Bay Kid 08-05-2018 06:33 AM

Instant plain oatmeal. Then I always add local honey and mix some type of fruit every morning, blueberries, bananas, etc .

I do this but do not use salt or sugar. I think that is why there is so much diabetes from all the sugar people use. I sometimes add fresh fruit and I want to try the ginger idea.

I knew a guy who would only consume artificial sweeteners. He developed artificial diabetes.

Artificial sweeteners are even worse. I never use those.

Instant Quakers oatmeal with water added. Splenda with a dash of fat free milk. Being a type two diabetic, I wouldn't expect anyone to like this simple way to make it.

I also eat a slice of toast with egg beaters and then go to the gym. Washed down with water.

Before anyone criticizes, I had doing this routine 5 days a week for many years with no ill effects. It works for me.

I don't disagree with the people who add other stuff or use other oatmeal. It's probably healthier.

It is all about personal preference. There is no right or wrong answer.

I put raw uncooked steel cut oats in my yogurt (Costco brand - plain, nonfat greek) along with fresh mixed berries and walnuts. Been eating this for breakfast for years.

I also agree with Ecuadog about Bob's Red Mill products - excellent! They also have a gluten-free muesli for those who need to refrain from gluten. My son eats that every morning and enjoys it over other gluten free breakfast products.

That sounds like a dessert [not that there's anything wrong with it].

Is it 1 cup yogurt to a 1/2 cup oatmeal or even less? Your breakfast sounds a lot better then mine.

tophcfa 08-05-2018 08:15 PM

Steel cut with about 90% water and 10% milk, then some frozen fruit.

I only put in 1 ounce of oats to 8 ounces of yogurt, but you certainly could add more. I use such a small amount because I try to limit the amount of grains I eat in a day. Then I add 1 ounce of nuts and 6 ounces of berries. It's a pretty hardy breakfast, but it works for me because when I do have to go into work I never know when my next meal will be and it keeps me satisfied for a long time.

They potentially lead to brain cancer, at least in rats. I doubt any neurosurgeons use them. Artificial sweetener causes cancer in rats at levels currently approved for humans, new study suggests -- ScienceDaily

thank-you I will take your advice. If I wanted to sub the nut because that's my least favorite do you have any suggestions?

Just skip it if you don't like them. I add them not only because I like them but because I like some crunch in my mixture. Maybe just add some more steel oats?

I did find a very low sugar granola called Bear Naked and used to use the triple berry flavor. But then I wanted to get away from sugar all together and went to the steel oats.

Choice

Our choice is Steel Cut Oatmeal. We never miss a morning without Oatmeal. My wife adds Strawberries, Blueberries
and cut up frozen Bannanas and Ginger. Some times Rassberries in place of Strawberries. Never miss a day without Oatmeal. Great way to start a day.:coolsmiley:

Have you tried it cold? Use a pint jar. Using organic oatmeal, fill it about 1/2 way, add cinnamon, some fruit, and cashew or almond milk just to cover and stir. Put in the refrigerator overnight. It is a great treat!!

PS I also like to add raw nuts.

That sounds good!

McCanns 5 min steel cut oatmeal. I microwave a two/ three day batch for breakfasts. Saves time and electric. Diversify with fruit, etc each day.

me too
I'm doing 6 servings at a time. I add 2 chopped apples to 2 cups of oats to 4 cups of water and then boil. I'm bumping it up next time, why not. I add dried fruit fruit and nuke 1 1/2 minutes. It's a lot easier.
