Television Question
 

In one of the previous posts about television service in TV a few people made reference to a service that was not available in TV. Some said then have that service back home and would like to see it there. I have tried the regular search of past posts but have not come with the name of the service. I believe it started with an FO or FI (wild guess) but cannot come up with anything. Any ideas? Thanks.

Maybe FIOS? But, I thought that was mostly high speed internet. A Verizon product.

That is it. I though it was television and you are correct it is high speed cable over fiber, or so they say.

Verizon has FIOS TV as well as internet:

It's available "back home" in NJ but not here in TV (at least where I am)

Think this is a Verizon bundled service using fiber optic similar to AT&T's Uverse which is also not available in TV. In TV, Comcast has a bundled offering that they call Triple Play (Internet, TV and Digital Phone service.)

I've had cable and internet service from a number of companies. Verizon's FIOS is the best by a mile. Check Consumer Reports, FIOS leads in all categories anywhere it's available. It would be great if it were available here. Maybe someday.

Thanks all for the reply, this is what I was looking for. It is interesting that this is a fiber optic network and there are not too many communities wired with fiber. A few years ago the local cable company was replacing the cable on my street and they were taking a break right in front of the house. I went out and talked with the guys and they said they were replacing the existing copper with fiber. I though cool that will increase the through put speed. I then looked at the marking on the cable and it was the standard copper stuff.

A few years ago I watched a piece on I believe it was PBS about other countries internet access and costs. I was shocked to hear the many countries are far more advanced in the use of fiber optic networks. The showed the through put speeds compared to regular cable and also compared costs. The US is really behind on this one.

I wonder if or when TV will start using fiber in place of copper when building a new village.

U.S. is behind on fiber because it is far ahead in copper infrastructure.

Countries, such as China, with developing technologies, are not replacing anything...U.S. companies have billions of dollars in copper landline that have to be replaced to introduce fiber. With that costly infrastructure in place, it is really surprising that they are introducing fiber as much as they are.

I had FIOS at my previous home. It is by far the best cable and internet service I've ever had. Quality, speed and reliability.

Is FIOS available in The Villages?

If so, does it carry the local "Villages" channels?

I am retired from Verizon Network Operations in Manhattan and we were just implementing it in the city before I left. In fact our home on Long Island is served by FIOS. It is by far, the gold standard in multimedia service to the home. Sadly, Verizon's landline footprint in Florida is only in the six counties in and around Tampa. I have heard of no plans to expand that and I doubt that they will ever do so. When we move there we will have to "settle" for the triple play of cable which is ok...but not the same as FIOS.

It would be great to see TV start putting in fiber in the newer villages as they have to put something down anyway.

I was telling a friend about FISO and his cousin from Tampa was up for a visit just a week earlier and told him all about it. Just something else I can just dream about.

Yeah, I agree Hawk. But, I just don't see Verizon jumping out of their six county area around Tampa. I think that was originally a GTE area that was acquired when Verizon absorbed GTE. Some cable outfits here on Long Island have pushed fiber to neighborhood "zones" but the home runs are still coaxial cable. FIOS is different in that the fiber comes right to the side of your house where it terms to a ONT (optical network terminal) that splits it up to become phone, cable and internet. The cable provider currently in The Villages could probably bring fiber to the neighborhoods but I doubt they'll bring it all the way to the homes. Why would they bother in that they have no ground based competition at least that I know of. :undecided:
