Will seldom visit TOTV in the future.

For a long time now, I've felt that advertisements of items for sale was taking over the postings on TOTV message board. Today it seems that 99.9% of the postings are items for sale.

I don't want or need anything that anybody else has for sale. That's why I don't go to garage sales or flea markets.

I also don't want to waste hours of my time wading through items advertised for sale on TOTV.

Accordingly, I will seldom visit TOTV in the future.

dewilson58 09-14-2018 11:48 AM

click on "hide"............it should clean that up for you.

Nucky 09-14-2018 12:33 PM

I'm going to miss you, Carl, you are often the voice of reason. I hope you change your mind. Take Care!

Ecuadog 09-14-2018 12:41 PM

Say it ain't so.

My Post 09-14-2018 01:00 PM

The sales items do clutter the new post page up badly. Like someone posted to sell a beach blanket and a towel today. Seriously?

CFrance 09-14-2018 01:07 PM

It used to be you could opt out of classifieds for good. Then TOTV did one of their upgrades and you couldn't. People complained a lot. Now they have an opt out button "Hide Classifieds," but unfortunately you have to click on it every time you log in or refresh the page or go to New Posts. I don't know why they haven't fixed this, but I wonder if they don't want to.

In any event, Hide Classifieds works, but you must click on it every time. Maybe money talks; I don't really know. I don't hardly ever agree with you, and I know it's reciprocal , but I do appreciate your input and respect your ideals. I hope you will keep posting, and I always wish you well.

villagetinker 09-14-2018 01:19 PM

I find that I sign in , go to new posts, and hit the HIDE button, this drops about 1/2 to 2/3 of the new "posts", then I read the real posts, hope you find this useful and continue to visit.

First thing to do is click on "Hide Classifieds" after going to New Posts.

Really value your input Carl in Tampa. Hope you will change your mind.

The internet is not free, content providers rely on advertising dollars to pay for bandwidth, hardware, and the labor to provide the “free” content you enjoy. Some websites are more annoying than other (I can think of a local “news “ site in particular), you have the choice of visiting or not visiting almost any website you want, for free. I may click on an add once a month at most, the rest I endure and ignore.

Arctic Fox 09-14-2018 01:49 PM

Each to his own.

I personally find the classifieds to be one of the more useful sections of TOTV and have acquired several items that I would not otherwise have bothered to buy.

I am not interested in posts discussing whether or not people like pot roast, but find it easy to scroll past these without being tempted to read them.

Having one site that offers so many different topics is an asset to our community.

Nothing to fix. By hitting the HIDE CLASSIFIED button you are running a search script. The results will appear and give you multiple pages to advance to, all without classifieds.

You log on again and must run this preprogrammed search again. When you hit the NEW POSTS button you are running a new search.

Carl,

While I do not agree with some of your posts, I have considered them well written, concise, and logically thought out. (Unlike many rashly written threads I find here.)

I also believe you have threatened this before?

I disagree with you. In the past, you could opt to Hide Classifieds and it was saved as one of your options forever. Not anymore.

Polar Bear 09-14-2018 04:53 PM

I have no more use for the ads than you do. And I bet the majority of users feel the same. But the “Hide Classifieds” button will take care of it. A quick click on that button will get rid of all the for-sale posts.

With all due respect, I think the post you disagreed with is correct. They didn't say it was a setting that hid classifieds forever. It's just a button you click every time you log on. Not too big an effort imho. :)

FWIW, that's what I remember.

:agree: Wait five seconds and click the Hide Classified button. NBD.

Yep.

Doro22 09-14-2018 06:48 PM

Many times I have found the items for sale extremely amusing. I.do enjoy a good laugh. Some of the ugliest sofas I have ever seen have appeared on those posts. Oh...and people trying to sell their shoes and purses. Yikes! Some of that stuff I would either donate or throw in the dump before I would put it up for sale. I actually cannot believe I’ve seen some of these things for sale. OMG...a towel! I click open those posts for a good belly laugh!

SFSkol 09-14-2018 06:55 PM

Blanket opting out of classifies appears to longer be an option. With the number of posts the OP has started one can presume that Carl can see the big buttons on the new posts page. If this opt-out "feature" is still available, perhaps we can petition TOTV to allow users to have this choice again.

Anyone might know how this could be achieved?

bandsdavis 09-14-2018 07:25 PM

Me too. Not a bog deal at all for me to go to new posts, click hide classifieds, and view the "real" posts.

Boy do I agree with you. :bigbow: please keep those adds coming

queasy27 09-14-2018 10:40 PM

FWIW, I log in and click New Posts, then Hide Classifieds. I browse the results page and when I see a topic I want to read I'll right-click and select Open Link in New Tab. Close that tab when I'm done reading and am left with the filtered results page. This saves me having to click Hide Classifieds every time the page reloads.

Now. This is the same number of clicks as just hitting Hide Classifieds each time, but it's the principle! I already told you to go away! ;-)

fw102807 09-15-2018 06:14 AM

I have bought and sold on TOTV classifieds and find them a valuable service.

Same here. I have done both on many occasions.

Exactly what I do. Then follow it with a Mark Posts Read before closing the browser and you're good to go next session. :)

Maybe they are lonely and just want someone to call them. It is interesting what people will try to sell.

Almost NOTHING but a Mini Cooper! :duck:

I routinely only read classifieds. I have bought and sold using them and have found them useful. as to discussions--I now avoid them like the plague.

Thanks to all.

Thank you for the many responses pointing out the Hide Classified button. It does help. I simply overlooked it. I'll be back more often.

TOTV Team 09-16-2018 03:25 PM

Carl,

If you click on 'Hide' you will not see any of the items for sale in New Posts. We had this customer coded for just this reason and users who do not want to see classified items.

Best Regards,

TOTV Team

Dear TOTV team, that is not really the case. You have to click on Hide Classifieds every single time you log in, go to New Posts, or even refresh a page. In the past, before a couple of "upgrades" ago, you could opt out of seeing the classifieds and it would stay in your settings that way. Now it won't.

As a matter of fact, another setting I use--show 40 posts per page instead of 25--keeps reverting back to only showing 25 even though when I check my settings, I'm still listed at the 45 per page setting.

If it's true what you say, that one can opt out of seeing classifieds for good, I'd like to know how to fix mine back to that. Thanks.
