Gecko Invasion after Red Rocks added

Had Red Rocks put around my home and now see many of those little geckos that I never had before with the pine straw. Makes me wish I had put mulch down. I guess they like the warmth of the rocks.

Not geckos, they're anoles. And they help keep the insect populations down.

Two Bills 10-19-2018 03:51 AM

They are the good guys that keep the bug population down.

Mikeod 10-19-2018 06:25 AM

I suspect you don’t have more anoles, but are just able to see them better against the rocks than you did against the pine straw. But I agree they are helpful keeping the insects down.

New Englander 10-19-2018 09:24 AM

And their cute little devil's.

Marathon Man 10-19-2018 09:30 AM

But it is much more fun to say "gecko"

BK001 10-19-2018 10:27 AM

Call me crazy, but try as I may, I can not seem to get over my aversion to snakes, ants, cockroaches, mice, rats and whatever the hell y'all want to call those "cute" lizards. Since moving to Florida my greatest fear, however, continues to be alligators. Still find my eyes frantically darting, looking for signs of life whenever I am in my pool especially since, with my hip problems, I know I wouldn't be able to get out fast enough to outrun it. LOL (I think)

BoatRatKat 10-19-2018 10:33 AM

I adore those little anoles, the more the better! I enjoy watching them scamper about and I even make pets out of them letting them sit on me while I'm working in the yard. Once they sit on me they stay, they like the warmth and will spend all day on me if I let them...and I do.

I agree they probably could change color to the straw and was pre near invisible, I have green on the come down out of the palms occasionally and in few minutes he or she slowly turns color to match background.

BK there a lot of things to be afraid of, but anoles are not one of them? Unless of course you when and seen Japanese Godzilla or
Rodan movies as kid and was terrified?

Little anoles are you're friends the eat all the bugs/insects we all despise. You'll regret it if they disappear, all those bugs/insects will be trying to get in the house.

If they disappear you may not be to happy. Snakes or rats love to eat them.

Ring neck snakes love pine straw and mulch. :1rotfl:All sorts of insects also. The lizards are your friend, kill them off and you'll be seeing all sorts of in invited guess?

SO TRUE. If we don't see them we know a snake is lurking somewhere. I have to say that a couple of days ago I saw six of them sunning themselves on our driveway. (anoles/gecko's) which is a LOT. Maybe this is a time of hatching for the little guys.

Why are Anoles called gecko's? all you even want to know about anoles, and yes they chance colors, but don't have the independent eye movement, slow movement, or feet of gecko's.

lol, as kids we would make earrings out of them. they will bite down on your lobe and hang there. they don't hurt.

rjm1cc 10-19-2018 01:36 PM

You probably have the same amount, just easier to see. Don't worry about them.

How do you do that? When they see me, they flee!

when I lived in Texas as a young child you could by them at the State Fair. They would put them on your ears for earrings and that seemed so cool.

ronsroni 10-31-2018 07:09 AM

would you prefer loads of palmetto bugs??? Anoles are experts at ridding your yard of them... and you rarely see them in your yard as they blend in with dirt and go under it.
Anoles are great. Watch them closely and perhaps you will appreciate them a bit more. Chemical free bug deterrent.

Ok, I get it -- those little lizards serve a good purpose. Still don't like 'em but I am trying since I like the fact that they are controlling the other bugs.

But EARRINGS???? The thought of those critters so close to my face is given me nightmares. Today is Halloween, so I guess a nightmare or two is appropriate.

collie1228 10-31-2018 08:31 AM

We had a large crop of anoles this year, including one that sleeps nightly on the back of a mesh yard chair. Three days ago we had a four foot black racer snake in our courtyard, and I chased him out with a broom. Our anoles are now down to just a few. And my favorite no longer sleeps on the chair. I'm afraid he sleeps permanently now.

I think men and women view crawly things differently.

The anoles don’t bother me but I don’t want to touch them or wear them. 😝
