Whistling toilet

When I flush the master toilet, the water inlet valve in the guest toilet makes a whistling sound. Started about 6 months ago. Happens about 90% of the time. Does not happen when any faucet is running. Has anyone else dealt with this?

graciegirl 11-04-2018 03:06 PM

Sometimes I hear a bassoon in that small room.

Chatbrat 11-04-2018 03:13 PM

Replace the fill valve , material $10.00 @ Lowes-- very easy check it out on youtube--did one 2 months ago

If it was happening to the toilet you were flushing I would say replace the fill valve. But if it's happening in a secondary toilet I would just be taking a guess and say to check the toilet vents to make sure they don't have any debris in them.

Also maybe try shutting off the water on the secondary toilet then see what happens when you flush the master.

Funniest thing I heard all day!

Sounds like a venting problem. But, I am not sure what you mean by the water inlet valve. Does water run in the guest toilet when you flush the master toilet? That would indicate a blockage in the vent pipe. You may need to get a plumber to go on the roof to check for a blockage in the vent pipe. But, I would start by replacing the flapper or sealing gasket in the guest toilet tank and see if it fixes the problem. That is a simple do it yourself task. You may also try shutting the toilet supply valve to the guest toilet (pull it out), empty the guest toilet by flushing it, and then see if you still get the noise.

I have the same type of problem. When the float goes to the top I get that sound.

Huh? Which fill valve was sticking? The master toilet or the guest toilet? Why would the guest toilet whistle when you flushed the master toilet? And, what do the faucets have to do with the problem? I'd like to know for future reference.

Our toilet sometimes whistles " Happy Trails " !

I already suggested that. One toilet should not affect another one unless there is a venting problem.

We both suggested a vent problem and/or a valve problem. But we're just mere commoners..

Well they do call it the throne

Had the same noise, replaced the fill valve and whistling stopped.

Some people just can't help themselves, even when trying to be helpful.

He does know which toilet is whistling. The one in the guest bathroom. The toilet in the GUEST bathroom whistles when he flushes the one in the MASTER bathroom.

Reading comprehension helps in situations like this.

Glad I waited several hours before checking my thread. Moderators must have been rolling on the floor.

I'll start by changing the fill valve, and picking a different manufacturer.

OK, have to ask, what the heck is a toilet vent?

Waste system plumbing has a vent to to the highest point in the house or building.

Make sure the water valve is turned wide open. More pressure less noise.

If its an Accor (push pull) valve, there is no adjustment.

flusher 11-05-2018 08:44 AM

Real Plumber here :ohdear:
Just go to Lowes and get a FluidMaster Toilet Fill Valve and replace.
Also, when the Koehler stoppers in the tank go bad replace with the Yellow gaskets.
YouTube explains how all those repairs are done.

I agree, but it doesn't explain how flushing one toilet causes a noise in another toilet in another room.

ribil 11-05-2018 07:50 PM

Simply adjust the water level in the tank by turning the screw on the float.

So true.

I wonder if the whistling has ceased and desisted? I got a kick outta this thread, I'm easily amused!

I simply replaced the noisy fill valve with a new one, and a Korky brand instead of Kohler. Problem solved.

Tom C 12-08-2018 12:54 AM

The noise is caused by the inflow valve moderating the inflowing water. Replacing it will fix it, cleaning (by taking it apart) may solve the problem for a few months or a year. Best bet is replacement as many others have said.

Glad things worked out for you. Very Good. :clap2:

PaulDenise 12-08-2018 09:15 AM

My theory on why one toilet is noisy after another one is flushed is that the water pressure changes.

When you flush one toilet, the water pressure drops a little, when that toilet is full and the internal float valve turns off the water, there is a slight momentary water pressure increase. This increase causes the weak valve on the other toilet to be overcome with pressure and it turns on briefly. If the valve is weak on that toilet you will get a slow whistle as the weak valve attempts to close. This would become worse if the float is poorly adjusted or too high, and/or if the toilet has a slight leak that tends to reduce the amount of water in the tank. This can also be caused by not having or having a bad pressure tank on top of the hot water heater. The purpose of that tank is to even out the water pressure surges.

So, basically, the only thing that connects the two toilets is the water line. The only thing that can change in the water line is pressure.

Speaking of Kohler.............I love Whistling Straits.

buzzy 12-08-2018 10:41 AM

Fortunately, I didn't have to move the toilet to another room.
