JohnN 03-02-2010 06:26 PM

there's another thread out there on this, and the poster said it now worked, but he didn't know why it didn't before.

Are you dial-up or broadband or DSL?

Rag Bagger 03-03-2010 12:00 AM

I am using a wifi connection.

Try this. In Internet Explorer, click on 'Tools' in the top menu bar and make sure that 'Work Offline' is NOT checked.

This doesn't really answer your question, but you might want to try Firefox, if you want to use a browser outside of AOL. I seemed to always have some sort of issue with my IE, but since using Firefox, my surfing seems to be a bit more stable.

Enjoy ..... :Screen_of_Death:

Checked "Work Offline" is under the file tab and is NOT checked.

I have never HAD to use AOL ;), so I do not know how it connects. You are obvioulsy posting here, so you have some way to browse.

That said, if I were to try and help, I guess I would start by understanding the network connection a bit better.

Get a command prompt <Start><Run>CMD

At the command prompt type:

ipconfig /all

There will be a whole bunch of stuff..... I have cut most out.... Look for lines like these:

Ethernet adapter Broadcom NIC:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : hsd1.fl.comcast.net.
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controlle
r
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1C-23-1F-04-A5
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, March 04, 2010 7:57:29 AM
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Friday, March 05, 2010 7:57:29 AM
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.87.74.166
68.87.68.166
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled
Above is an example of a good comcast connection (through my router).

Now type one more command:

nslookup comcast.com
You should get back something like:

C:\Users\asonnenb>nslookup comcast.com
Server: cns.bonitasprngs.fl.naples.comcast.net
Address: 68.87.74.166

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: comcast.com
Addresses: 69.241.45.20
69.241.45.4
If you see an answer about the address of comcast.com, do you are indeed online and we need to look at the browser.

I use Firefox also and have been very happy.

Don't get upset - but it is your personal WiFi connection or are you piggybacking off of an unsecured WiFi connection in the neighborhood?

This is a valid question as it was the problem of another neighbor in the area.

I have used many different wifi connections from unsecured connections. Hotels, library, neighbors and other establishments. So yes I do not have a personal wifi connection right now. But I have the same problem when I use my ethernet connection in TV.

You need to clean out your cache files. Click on tools, then internet options and then delete your temporary internet files. IF you also clear your cookies, I'll bet your problem will go away. Remember that when you clear your "cookies" you will have to "log-in" again to the web sites that require membership and registration. So, please be sure you remember your user id and passwords.

Not a Factor

Cookies, temporary files, etc. have absolutely no impact on whether or not he can make a connection. Where in the world did you come up with that?

Your right didn't do nothin

ajbrown 03-04-2010 07:54 PM

So you can go to the command prompt and type:

nslookup comcast.net

and get an answer (IP address)

then put comcast.net into IE and have it not connect?

Since it is both the WiFi and ethernet connection, my response at this time would be to either have someone come over to look at the problem or to bring your laptop over to someone's house that is knowledgeable and willing to help you. Preferably a person a wireless router and an extra port so you can try the ethernet connection also.

That is how I handle connection problems in my area. First I go to their house to see if I can fix it and then we go to my house to work on it if I have no success. We have yet to have to go to my house.

Take your lap top up to Barns & Noble and see if you can connect there. Try getting on the internet and hopefully you have something else that requires a network connection such as Outlook etc. If you can connect there with no problem then you know your wireless is working.

Go home and first try a wired connection and see if that works. Much easier to trouble shoot something wired than wireless. Now try the internet just as you had it at Barns and see what the results are. If that does NOT work then try the other program (Outlook etc.) If the other program works then you know you have a good network connection and that you problem will be with either your browser or a Comcast setting.

After you get the wired connection working then and only then move over to wireless. One thing at a time.

I do believe that there may have been some other posts maybe over a year old regarding problems with Comcast and the internet let me look an see if I can find them.

Hawkwind 03-04-2010 09:13 PM

I did some looking in the Computer Questions forum and came up with a couple of links that users were having problems with Linksys routers and they might help you. I also ran across a link to TV Computer Club Help page. Now this is a great site and is no longer shown on the Computer Club web site. I asked about it at one meeting and was told that keeping it up to date will all the latest hardware and software changes is a monumental task but it is a very good starting point for problem solving.

Where I came with it is that if the page that was reporting the "no connection" was locked in the cache files, it could reappear from there rather than go to a new page. It could have been a false report from a temporary internet file.

Thanks...But

Thanks for all the assistance. Unfortunatelly I am stuck in Kentucky right now and will not be able to get back to TV untill Late March. So I only have wifi connetions here. I do NOT have an ethernet or even a dial up connection here.
I am going to have to wait untill I get to TV to work this issue out. My Laptop is so screwed up I will probably need to get major help.

Thanks all again

500 pound Gorilla in the room...

OK, I am completely confused by this thread.

Lincoln...if you have no internet connection, how are you posting? If you're posting with the laptop in question, you do not have an internet connection problem. You simple have an issue with Internet Explorer, which was in your very first post. You said you were using AOL and last time I checked, you needed an internet connection to use AOL.

There could be a multitude of reasons IE will not connect, but if I were having the problem, I'd just reinstall IE. If that doesn't work, I'd download Firefox or Opera and forget about IE.

If I'm missing something, tell me what ??

Happy surfing
