During the campaign I said we had a Marxist (Obama), a Socialist (Hillary) and a Democrat running as a Republican (McPain), to pick from. I haven't changed my opinion.

This is the part that really gets my dander up.

There are people out there, like me, who are sympathetic to many conservative concerns.

Making stuff up out of thin air and sticking to it when the facts don't back it up does you more harm than good when trying to sway people's thinking.

Fact: The banks are paying back TARP funds.

Fact: The government is preparing to divest itself of GM

Conclusion: The government is communist?

You do yourself NO favors when you only look for things that support your point of view. That's thinking the way many religions think - with a conclusion and then trying to find facts to back it up. Think critically or more scientifically and you might end up changing your own mind.

I don't like the growth of government over the past year but these ARE extraordinary times, almost without precedent (note I say ALMOST).

Were Presidents Nixon and/or Ford Marxists? They presided over the government takeover of 16 northeast freight railroads in the creation of Conrail in January of 1976. We The People owned Conrail until 1999 and the government, UNDER BILL CLINTON, sold it at a profit.

Now, you want to argue that Obama has socialistic tendencies or that he believes government is a solution to problems? Plenty of evidence for that. But be careful when you throw around emotionally charged words like "Communist" or "Marxist". Why? Because it's too easy to refute you with the facts.

Yes! I do think Bill Maher is funny. But my all time favorite is Jon Stewart. However last night, I think he was wrong on one subject. He said that Sarah Palin made her comedic debut on Jay Leno, but I think she did that at the RNC Convention. :loco:

Interesting. I find her articulate, funny,smart and attractive. Many traits that some older women find threatening. Speaking of which, Ms. Pelosi is such a turn-off. Of course I feel comfortable in my shoes.

Donna2, I also didn't know that Victoria Jackson was a member of the Tea Party movement. With all due respect, I couldn't care less. I saw her on Shawn Hannity and thought she was having a pentecostal moment while echoing rhetoric without substance or background and education. When that happens; it causes a divide and a polarization amongst people with different opinions without any opportunity for knowledge and growth.



IMHO, that is the reaction you get when you address an issue without any substance and with only a song and dance routine. That brings me to address chelsea24 and djplong's obtuse comments.



I wouldn't want to speak for djplong, but after reading many of his posts, I doubt he is trying to articulate that "This kind of crap does the conservative party no good at all. Just one more buffoon," attitude. Is she correct djplong in agreeing with you on that?



Just curious, but what religions "think - with a conclusion and then" try "to find facts to back it up." Also, djplong, you obviously endorse thinking "critically or more scientifically" in order to "end up changing your own mind." I didn't know anything about Victoria Jackson. As a matter of fact, as a former member of Saturday Night live, I was expecting a spoof of the conservative movement when I first seen her in the video. I thought she was of the liberal drones that spew their not so funny skits on SNL, which I haven't watched in 20 years.
As for the other poster you mentioned. Contradiction comes to mind. Seems to want to be taken seriously but clearly unfocused.
You know, the liberals passed off that hateful spiteful crap during the Bush years and called it humor.
Now the shoe is on the other foot and their not laughing.

Oh well, alot of things going on right now aren't very funny and the joke is going to be on the American citizens.

Interesting...I keep reading how there are so many like you who rely on this show and this type of show for news, and I also read how most adults know very little about our government....wonder if there is a connection !!

Obama was never really vested by the press. He virtually received a free ride in the election. Yet, when Mrs. Palin was chosen to run for vice president they sent an army to Alaska to look under every rock.
Do I think they/him are hiding important facts. Yes. For instance, the press made a big deal of Bush's drinking days but never mentioned Obama's involvement into drugs and alcohol or any of his associations at his college. Rumors of his sub-par grades and his admittance because of affirmative action persist today.

Wouldn't it be nice to get, right or wrong or otherwise

I have to issue an apology.

I used the phrase "religious thinking" and, upon thinking about it, I really shouldn't have said that. It paints with too broad of a brush.

What was in my head at the time that I wrote it were the things like Muslims who claim the Koran is so incredibly accurate because they 'came close' on the number of bones in the hand so *therefore* the Koran *must* be used as a primer on how to live life.

I didn't have a word for "conclusion-first, now let's find facts to back it up and *only* supportive facts" kind of thinking.

I should have expressed myself better, or, at the very least, more clearly, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

When folks set forth this type of "argument" all they do is perpetuate the partisan bickering instead of focusing on the real facts, the dire situation we are facing as a country, and what needs to be done about it.

This is exactly the type of thing that the politicians do for the purpose of misdirecting our attention from the real problems we're facing to stuff that elevates our emotions, but serves no purpose in addressing the real problems and what to do about them.
