I was at WD in LSL today to pick up some last minute things, and the cashier told me that; not only is she required to work a full shift tomorrow, she is NOT getting holiday pay for it! And before you respond, remember that not everybody has the luxury of just quitting a lousy job. Another reason I prefer, and usually shop at Publix. They will be closed tomorrow to allow their employees to spend time with their families.

What would also help is if people just stayed out of the stores on Thanksgiving. If there are no sales for that day then a company would not continue to be open.

I have not been anywhere on Thanksgiving to purchase anything in as long as I can remember for this reason.

Good for you, I have never shopped on Thanksgiving either!

Nor do we eat at restaurants on holidays.

Sometimes our jobs require inconvenient things like working on holidays.

Sometimes we have to shift the celebration of some holidays to another date because our married children have another family to consider.

I owned a steel processing warehouse all of my adult life. It never failed that the day before a holiday there would be a good customer wanting something processed to ship the day after they holiday. I can't even remember how many times I worked on Christmas Day as well as on Thanksgiving. My employees were given a choice whether to come in at double pay usually starting at 5:00 AM so we could still get home at a somewhat reasonable hour or take the day off, some chose to work 8 hours, others a half day and the rest not at all. Sometimes it just has to be done. Based on the financial condition of Winn Dixie, they are most likely trying to bring as many dollars in as possible to help them survive. If they don't survive this girl and many others will be looking for new jobs and thankfully there are many of them now available or will soon be available when all the new retail stores open.

Take your turkey leg and go out and sit on I-75.

Watch the truck traffic. Behind the trucks are warehouses, fuel stations, repair shops, retail and wholesale stores..........the list of jobs is endless. Since we all want products on the shelves when we want them............people are working on holidays.

Plus "we" want to travel when we want to travel. Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

Unfortunately the USA is 24/7 and does not stop for holidays.

Then all of those who are forced to or who want to work on that day get no (or barely any) tips which is how they make a living. Tough choice on that one.

Publix will also be closed because it's just a lousy day for business and all they get are those last minute folks going nuts looking for a loaf of bread to finish the stuffing and it's not worth keeping the lights on. Besides WD is only opened until 4PM. Plenty of time to enjoy family dinner.

While WD might be a "Scrooge" they are providing a service for those who need them for last minute holiday cooking. I found (from my own job hunting experience when the company I worked for for many years shut down) that when people apply for positions they are told UP FRONT that if you want the job we are offering you you are required to work weekends, or Holidays or whatever. In a service oriented economy some places need to be there for the convenience of their customers. As for holiday pay ..... it's their job.

Up north MOST all major supermarket chains were opened 24/7 365 with 1/2 day on the 3 major holidays. When we moved down here I couldn't get used to going to Publix and finding they are closed at 10PM although I can understand why. Here in The Villages they roll up the streets at 9PM. :D

I have no problem with Winn Dixie being open on Thanksgiving or any other day. And, I don't think an employee should be complaining to a customer about it. Part of her job is to represent the company.

Maybe the Sherriff's Dept should close also.

The day of everything closing up on holidays is past us. We Americans are a bit spoiled, if you hadn't noticed. We want it all but complain if it might interfere with our lives, which of course, are the only special lives.

I never shop on Thanksgiving unless I forgot to buy cranberry sauce. When I do have to shop, I do try to avoid the stores who have bell ringers out front.

I always give to the Salvation Army Thank You ... Especially the bell ringers

The operative phrase in there is "AT Double Pay". People don't mind working holidays so much when they get time and 1/2 or double for it, to make up for missing out on family time. Yes, lots of people work holidays, and decent companies make it worth it.

Full-time employees are entitled by law to receive holiday premium pay. The cashier must be part-time.

You might want to reread the Fair Labor Standars Act. This is an incorrect statement.

And Florida law follows the FSLA.

I worked for an airline. The airport and airlines are open 24/7...365 days a year. Many employees miss the holiday and wish they were home with their families too. Be kind to the employees that keep the world running while you are on day off.

Yep, it's more like a union thing.

The only time I ever went to the store on Thanksgiving was when I realized I needed Bell’s seasoning
for my stuffing.

Many people have to work on holidays. Unless you know the financial and other ramifications it is simplistic for us as outsiders to criticize a company providing services and products on holidays. They also provide a good number of jobs and pay a lot of taxes to keep ours at a reasonable level.

Fresh Market is also open tomorrow until 3:00. I grew up in the midwest---there was a time that EVERYTHING closed (except hospitals) on Sunday's and holidays. Then gradually the culture changed and it was MORE important for businesses to make a buck. Now you can't differentiate one day (in retail) from another. I applaud the businesses that opt to be closed tomorrow so their employees can spend time with their loved ones!!

On another note....I try to show kindness to those folks as they work hard for their $$. I can't imagine standing on my feet for whatever the shift is and trying to be pleasant with the public.

I am with you. Back in the day Thanksgiving, Christmas and Sunday were all a day of rest, family and God. Not anymore.

During the 80's I ran a community bank in Maryland. We had "in store" branches -grocery stores. We decided to open those branches on Sundays and holidays when the Grocery was open. We requested volunteers to staff them. Protest came from a few customers, largely on religious grounds, and from several local politicians.

We had more volunteer employees than we could accommodates: single mothers, college students, part timers and many more who wanted the opportunity to get some more hours. Customers responded by making these hours some of the busiest for transactions. Many said that they were unable to get to our offices on normal work days.

I am one of those people who have shopped at Winn Dixie on Thanksgiving or Christmas. At the last minute, I realize that I forgot something or wanted something else. A went to Winn Dixie, purchased what I needed and thanked them for working on the Holiday. Yes....it’s their job, but a little kindness goes a long way.

I just got back from the neighborhood Walmart, which is open until midnight today. I didn't really need anything, but I had to go because it is open. Probably need to go back again.

Do you think the Golf and Country Club Division is Scrooge because the golf courses, the driving ranges and the Custom Club Shop are open? I don’t; they are providing a service for the residents and their guests. Can you imagine the griping and complaining if the golf courses were closed? You probably can’t.

Do you think all Law Enforcement Agencies are Scrooge for making their Police Officers work? How about the airlines keeping their planes in the air. Sorry, but there are many people that have to work the days you think they don’t need to.

My husband works for the Golf and CC Divison; he gets time and 1/2 for a holiday. The others you mention are on a nice salary plus benefits, not minimum wage. Being stuck at a job during a holiday doesn't sting so much if you're at least getting compensated for your time. I was one of them 'way back when, I know and sympathize. And as for the poor, mistreated Villagers that might have to skip golf one day? No sympathy at all.

If one wants to differentiate entertainment from necessities like police and transportation, should businesses like movie theaters and bowling alleys also be closed?

Furthermore, should retail businesses be closed for all national holidays? If not, why is Thanksgiving different? It's not specifically a religious holiday.

It wouldn't occur to me to feel sympathy for retail employees working on Thanksgiving beyond what I might feel for them on any other day (which is kind of a lot tbh, but that's my own aversion to customer service positions).

I grew up in PA., and lived with the Blue Laws of the day. As the laws changed, Sunday became the biggest shopping day of the week.

Point is, you want to "blame" business for being bad guys. If nobody shopped, they would not be open, and if it were your business, you would be open to sell to them.

And in today's world when moms & dads work 5-6 days a week and often have multiple jobs Sunday is the only day they can shop (if Sunday wasn't a work day). I can say that from experience and the best thing that ever happened was Sunday shopping.

In the early years of my marriage my late husband he had to work every single holiday. Oil wells don’t stop pumping. My family accommodated his hours and we just adjusted when we had dinners, opened presents and the like. It’s called making a living. At times on a new drill he didn’t come home but to shower and go back to work. That's how we saved our money that enables me to live here.

Working (any day any time) is better than not having a job. We need to be thankful for what we have.

I have worked MANY holidays including Christmas and New Years Day. I am thankful for the opportunity and all I was able to learn.

You can thank those working and maybe tip those in the jobs that allow such, but remember all those in the military and other occupations that keep our services working.

I don't shop on Black Friday, except during REGULAR business hours. As someone who's spent most of her working life in retail, I can say in all confidence that Black Friday brings out the absolute worst in people. It is a celebration of greed, nothing more or less. There is nothing you need at 2 in the morning, that you can't get at 10 in the morning. If you can't afford to get it at the 10AM price, then you should re-think your priorities. You have all year to buy a widget. There's no reason why you have to do it at 2 in the morning, making minimum-wage employees have to miss out on sleep just so they can watch you rip through a shelf of toys with six dozen other people all vying for the limited selection available for the special price of whatever.

It disgusts me. I've also stopped working on Fridays in retail. For that very reason. They can't make me work at 2 in the morning, if I'm not available to work on Fridays at all.
