Ahh, Skyline Chili from Publix
What's not to like about Skyline Chili on spaghetti, with shredded cheddar, and onions? Thank you Publix for carrying this lovely food in the freezer section. Not many things ring my bell from my time at Univ of Cincinnati in the 60's, but Skyline and LaRosa's Pizza do it for me.
|
I would have never thought to look for that in the freezer section, thanks for the tip. I will have to pick some up.
|
Another Cincinnati favorite...Graeters ice cream available at Walmart on 466.

Skyline chili
Lived in cincy for 4 years. That frozen chili is not as good as what i remember
|
Nothing like a 3-way. Just in case you end up in Clearwater, there is an actual Skyline for sit down dining. Opens 10:30AM Mon

Love it. Can do without Graeters Ice Cream. When we go home we also bring back canned Mock Turtle Soup and Goetta.
|
Walmart also carries this chili.
|
Just picked up a package today. Haven't tried it yet. But, the only problem is that a 13.25 OZ package contains 2,120 MG of sodium. Why does almost everything frozen or canned need to have so much sodium?

Most people have it ONCE in AWHILE.

I split the serving making two portions. 2nd portion, today, went for a out of sight chili dog. So guess that's a double sodium hit all at once, but it was good (and I skipped the bun, so that helped).

On our departure from Ohio yesterday my last stop was to go " Krogering " to bring back some Yoder's brand corn meal mush, my breakfast favorite.
|
So, I thawed out the 13.25 ounce package of Skyline chili in the refrigerator overnight. Heated it a saucepan with a 15 ounce can of "no salt added" pinto beans (drained and rinsed), and a half cup of chopped onion. I give it a 4 out of 5 star rating.

As a native Cincinnatian, and UC grad (where I used to work at La Rosa's), I approve this message.
|
Lived in Cincinnati 25 years. The local chili is an " acquired " taste. I always liked Gold Star better then Skyline. A three way with a Coney on the side.
|
In the same freezer section area...Atkins, Lean Cuisine, is pretty decent for those of you that are on a " Guilt " trip.
|
Warning - If you are from the Northeast this is not chili as we know it. I purchased it today and threw it down the sink this evening. It is just liquid, spicy and salty .... oh my god is it salty. I could not even bring myself to put it over pasta.

Ron White said, of Cincinnati Chili, "A Mexican can make better chili with an onion and a goat."

Well, I guess I haven't acquired it yet. I am eating the Skyline as I write this and I really wanted to like it. 1. Yes it is very salty. Generally we like spicy foods so I was able to tolerate it but just barely. 2. Consistency --it seemed more like a mushy soup than chili -- our chile usually has the consistency of, say perhaps, sloppy joe's -- not so soupy -- you cannot eat this with a fork -- it requires a spoon. 3. It did have a little heat "kick" to it - perhaps it was the paprika - which I did not mind. 4. I tasted a strong flavor of either 5-spice or Chinese All-spice, two flavors I don't care for. 5. I will not be buying this ever again. |
I would assume people making it at home knows you add meat to this chili and not just pour it on the spaghetti. My brother makes it with sausage and hamburger.

It's been 3.5 hours since I ate this and I am still drinking -- I cannot get rid of my thirst. My mom always said if you can't say something nice ... but I'm finding it difficult to heed her advice. Not only was it a complete waste of 500 calories but I don't like the aftertaste that seems to be lingering in my mouth. Did I say I will not be buying this ever again? |

Let's be fair. Cincinnati is the home obviously of " Cincinnati Chili " , Goetta and Mock Turtle Soup. Not to my taste, but I was not raised with them. In the Philadelphia area I was hard pressed to have someone share with me the great tastes of Scrapple, Snapping Turtle and Philadelphia Pepper pot soup and Shad and Roe. I never figured out the attraction of Rocky Mountain Oysters in Denver or Abalone on the West Coast. Most of us would never take to Menudo which I happen to think is one of the finest dishes ever to be exported from Mexico. My wife is from Wisconsin and scarfs down smoked whitefish like it is going extinct tomorrow along with jellied beef loaf and summer sausage. Creole and Cajun cuisines while genuinely delicious have a few dishes that some of us might not relish. The message is, try it, if you do not like it, do not try it again. There is always something else which can be eaten which you might find to be heaven on a plate.
