Garden waste

This area of TV has a garden waste collection every Wednesday

I have seen various items on neighbours' driveways, including large brown bags and loose branches.

I have two questions:

Is it okay to put branches out by themselves, or should everything be bagged?

Does "garden waste" mean just that, or can I include household vegetable matter in the bags, such as banana skins, apple cores etc.?

Which brings me to a surprise third question, for those who were asleep in class:

If I cannot include household vegetable matter, is composting popular here? There are commercially-available plastic compost bins that, in our climate, would turn waste into soil relatively quickly.

Thank you

Branches can be by themselves but should be cut into 4' pieces.
Garden waste means just that....no household garbage.
Composting would work if no smell and you were able to keep the rats away. Probably more trouble than what it is worth.
BTW all villages have waste pick up on Wednesday.

Does garden waste include sod? I want to create some gardens but have no idea how to get rid of the sod that I remove. Up north I had a large property with a secluded space for composting. I don't have that down here.

I have cut numerous flower gardens. I cut the sod in squares and knock off the soil (sand) and then bag the sod. It is always picked up and by removing the soil the bags are not too heavy.

Good to know. When you say they are "removed" is this on the Wednesday pickup or the general trash pickup. I would think that the Wednesday pickup crews may be reluctant to pick up trash bags without knowing what is in them.

Where can I find the brown paper garden bags? Will garden waste be picked up in the black plastic lawn/leaf bags?

Also...will garden waste, such as weeds, be picked with the regular trash?

Thanks.

You can get the bags at; Lowes, Home Depot, Walgreens, all Ace Hardwares and Sam's Club to mention a few.
Garden waste will not be picked up if you use plastic bags.
Why put garden waste in regular pick up.....better to recycle than load up the landfill.

Don't forget Publix. Closer to home and cart accessible.

They will take yard trimmings in plastic bags.

When I have been out of the paper and used the plastic they take it.
When cutting your long branches in lengths it is always helpful to the workers and appreciated if you bundle and tie a few together.

If packaged there is almost nothing...yard wise...they won't take.

btk

PS Yard waste is to be put out Tuesday night for Wednesday AM pick up.

Sorry to reiterate what has been said already but just want to be sure I've got it correct...

Is yard waste the same day (Wednesday) for all of TV no matter which days are regular trash pick up???

Thanks.

Listen for the truck on Wednesday...if you hear it then Wednesday is your day.

It is in Hemmingway and since Duval is next door, I would be extremely surprised if it were another day.

I'll know by tomorrow. I've done some yard work and will be putting out my yard waste tomorrow (Wednesday). I didn't put the waste in the brown paper bags but the large black plastic lawn/leaf bags. Should I keep the bags open so the men who pick it up can see that it is in fact yard waste and not garbage?

coffeebean 03-18-2010 09:26 AM

I put my garden clippings and weeds in my black plastic lawn/leaf bags on Wednesday. (I'm in Duval) All bags were picked up and I had them all closed. Thanks to all who informed me of this pick up in addition to the regular garbage pick up. I never would have known about this.

There is more info regarding trash pickup on page 38 in the front of The Villages phone book.
BTW there is a lot of other useful information in the phone book.
