What's that smell?
Has anyone noticed a strong burning smell in Hemingway or the surrounding villages? It is so strong here that I cannot open my lanai door or walk comfortably around the neighborhood. I called the Customer Service number and found that 1) They are aware of it; 2) They have received numerous complaints; 3) There is nothing they can do. I imagine that this could be a real problem for folks with breathing problems or lung diseases. Does anyone know what this is and where it's coming from?

This is twice now we have smelled smoke in our area just north of 466a. This morning it wasn't just smell, there was a smoke haze all over. Just a guess, but I bet somebody is clearing some land, and burning the brush piles.

Coming south on Morse a few minutes ago I could see a column of smoke off to the west past the St. Charles area. My guess is someone is burning brush.

I take Caly (my dog) down to the end of what I guess will be Morse someday south of 466a where they store building supplies. As "we" ;) looked west into the field last evening you could see two HUGE piles smoldering in the sunset in the adjacent fields

Smell
They're burning trees and stumps from the new golf course on the s/s of 466A also a little further east on 466A a farmer cleared some land and is burning his trees and stumps. Yea it stinks.

Probably the local meth lab.

Geez. The first time I read that I thought you said math lab. I wondered what kind of school Whalen went to.

Last week I was on a flight from Atlanta to Tampa and it went right along the West coast of Florida. It was a beautiful clear day and I was on the left side of the plane. There were well over a hundred fires burning all along the entire trip from Northern most Florida all the way South to Tampa. They were in fields, orchards, some even appeared to be in woods. My guess is that it's the time of year when clearing, pruning, removing old orange trees, building new developments, and any other land clearing that takes place is completed. Lots and lots of fires.

smoke and such
a shame really that mature trees are being removed so that the villages can expand, and then as soon as building is completed more trees are planted to replace the ones they removed. wish building could be a more accomodating to existing trees.
and then there is the pollution factor....burning....most communities have banned all types of burning (private and public) for years....smoke is a pollutant. why not chipping up the trees to create mulch and compost (have you dug a hole in your yard and seen the soil down there.....sad stuff) and why are they expanding beyond 466A already when north of 466A is far from being completed? :boxing2: and that's all for now... |

When I grew up, oaks as old as Atlanta were prevalent.* Developers actually worked around them and left them standing! It was a beautiful, hilly city with lots and lots of trees. Today, everything in the burbs of Atlanta is clear cut for development.
* Of course, at the time, Atlanta was only about 100 years old. (You might recall, speaking of what's that smell, that Sherman burned Atlanta to a crisp back in the 1860s.) :mornincoffee: |
