Which king mattress should I buy?

Buying a mattress is overwhelming! Any particular store you recommend, or did you buy online? Which is your favorite brand?

Thanks for any feedback.

Thanks for any feedback.

Have bought memory foam king from both Amazon and Walmart. Have a nice topper also.

Comfortable and bedbugs dont like them.

Also have option of getting a high 18" frame to allow for under bed storage.

Consumer Reports has been rating the Casper mattress as better than Tempurpedic, even though the cost is only about a third as much. I am very tempted to order one, but my common sense about cost and value has prevented me from believing the reviews. Is the Casper mattress really better than Tempurpedic?

manaboutown 06-04-2019 05:53 PM

A year ago I bought a Charles P. Rogers mattress and am really pleased with it. Charles P. Rogers Powercore Estate 5000 mattress - Consumer Reports

I also have a three year old Hotel Collection King from Macy's which I like but I prefer the Rogers mattress. Mine are Eastern Kings. I don't know if Rogers makes a California King if that is your preference. I like the slightly wider bed and don't need the little extra length.

Your mattress choice will depend on your weight and in what position you sleep. I am 6'2", weigh 220 and sleep on my back. Some mattresses do not accommodate well a person weighing over 200 or a side sleeper. My girlfriend, 5'9' and 125, finds the Rogers a little firm, and prefers the Macy's mattress. My back is good with the Rogers and OK with the Macy's. When a mattress starts to sag my back lets me know it is time for a new one.

I signed up for Consumer Report for their online service. After shopping & trying just about everything in the stores we settled on a Tuft & Needle Queen Size Mint, the thicker of the two they offer. Our Kids swear by that brand. It was not rated the best. I am concerned.

We had a Tempurpedic for 18 years and could probably stretch a couple of years out of it but Hey, we're down here to live well, right? The good thing is if the Tuft Mattress doesn't work out we still have the Old baby as a standby. I think it was a little over $900.

I had the same thoughts you did. You get what you pay for but my kids convinced me. We shall see! Standby for further developments.

Nicky,

Please keep us posted.

Last year we bought a $3000 mattress from Mattress Firm and exchanged it for another one,,,I think it’s Sealy...hate it. They have 120 day guarantee.

We are looking to replace it but don’t what to buy.

We will be watching this thread closely so keep the reviews coming!

dbcolli 06-04-2019 06:55 PM

I just bought the Winkbed bed in a box about three weeks ago. I researched for days on the on line reviews that can drive you crazy.
We purchased the Cal King luxury firm model and figured we have 120 days to try it or they will pick it up and refund us.
Looks kike it is not going back, it is a keeper.

Someone told me that the Marriott mattress is good.

xkeowner 06-04-2019 06:56 PM

Relax in Comfort

We hated our memory foam king size mattress and after talking with friends and shopping around bought a new king size bed/base from Relax in Comfort in Lake Sumter Landing. We paid almost twice as much as I paid for a brand new Mercury Cougar in 1971 but could not be happier! With our old mattress I found myself dozing off most afternoons for 30+ minutes. This has not happened once in the month since we bought the new set. We are sleeping so much better!

Their custom sheets are expensive but after we donated all of our conventional sheets to charity friends informed us they were using conventional sheets without a problem.

Good luck!

Did you get the plush, medium or firm? Apologies, I see firm in your post.

nothing beats a good quality 100% natural latex mattress. We love ours so much we have the exact same one at both our Villages home and our home up North.

We've had a Tempurpedic for years and It's the best mattress we've ever had. But a mattress is a personal choice. Most any place that sells them will let you try them for a while.

When I've used Consumer Reports in the past, I've found I had to look closely at how they have made the comparisons and the details they have rated. I've feel Consumer Reports a useful guide but I'd never buy something based solely on a CR rating and the item with the top overall score wasn't always what I purchased.

Since Casper is less expensive than Temperpedic (everything is cheaper than Tempurpedic :-) ), try it first and if you don't like then return it and try the Tempurpedic.

We got a Casper 6 months ago and LOVE it. If you don't like it you can return it within 100 days. I had a Tempurpedic and hated it because when you sleep on it you sink into a "hole" and I found it difficult to get out. :D There are other differences but they are NSFW. ;)

KSSunshine 06-04-2019 09:04 PM

The choices for mattresses are overwhelming! We just purchased (hasn't been delivered yet) a Tempur-pedic Split King with adjustable frame so we can each have our own level of firmness or softness with head/feet elevation. (He likes firm, I like soft). There is a 120 day guarantee; however, that means we can exchange it for another Tempur-pedic, not a refund.

dbcolli 06-04-2019 09:22 PM

I bought the luxury firm model as it is their most popular

Nucky 06-04-2019 10:20 PM

The biggest disappointment during the search of the local bedding stores was the one I thought would be the hand in the glove. Sleep Number Bed. They certainly do have a great following and their customers are faithful. I met one as we were entering and one as we were leaving who were replacing their Old Sleep Number Bed's. The Prices were not just High they were absolutely out of touch and absolutely INSANE. Eight or Nine Grand for a Bed??? I like nice stuff to but come on.

If the Tuft & Needle doesn't work out directly for the Middle Model of The Temperpedic. I think it was around $4000. Our heads are spinning. This Deal Is Just Too Good To Be True. We'll see, I can't wait! Better than Christmas Morning!

Tom C 06-04-2019 10:41 PM

Anyone ever try or have a Purple mattress? I was looking at reviews and feedback and this MAY be another (like we need another ...) option.

Everyone says they sleep very cool (unlike a tempur-pedic which we have found to be too warm even in ALASKA!!).

Debfrommaine 06-05-2019 04:42 AM

What do you do with the old mattress if you order one on-line?

aninjamom 06-05-2019 04:58 AM

I don't even remember what we've got, but it's comfortable. It was not insanely expensive either. In my opinion, the only way to buy a mattress is to go try them out. We went to local stores and lay on mattresses until we found one that felt right for us both. I always feel silly doing that, but it's the best way!

deano_hoosier 06-05-2019 05:05 AM

We are pretty much novices at mattresses, but have learned lesson about overall mattress heights when combined with box spring and bed frame rails. Never gave overall height the thought we should have... big mistake as the plusher, pillow top mattresses can be quite thick. Having a shorter wife, I've learned some lessons:) Last purchase went with low profile box spring and removed the castor/wheels from the bed frame to achieve a comfortable access height for her. Also noticed between our two houses, the edge firmness on the mattress in Florida is "stiffer" which make rolling out of bed easier than the mattress in Indiana that sort of sinks on the edge on exit.

I, too, wonder about the disposal question. Looking forward to comments.

The trash people will take it, but you are supposed to call for scheduling.

juneroses 06-05-2019 06:02 AM

Because of mattress weight and versatility, you might want to consider purchasing two twins instead of a king. Position the twins side-by-side, use fitted twin sheets for the bottom, and king/queen blankets and cover sheets for the rest. A disadvantage, however, is the limitation in buying bedding since you don't want a "set". Bed Bath and Beyond does sell separates but the choice is limited. Amazon might have others but I'm satisfied with BBBY.

dbcolli 06-05-2019 06:43 AM

For disposal with the Winkbed I opted for their white glove delivery service for $159 they had two men set up the new one and remove my old mattress. It was well worth it.

mrpete2 06-05-2019 09:41 AM

DO NOT buy Sealy. I had 2 in 3 years and they started to sag badly in 1-2 months. Their Customer Service is awful. They don't have exact replacements, so they charge you for an upgrade. And you have jump through hoops to get it.
I bought my last one from Marion Market and it is much better than any Sealy product I have had.
Maybe not the classiest, but certainly works for me.

Debfrommaine 06-05-2019 06:07 PM

Thanks for all the feedback.

After going through multiple mattress sets that were unacceptable after various periods of use, my wife found FloBeds online. They use latex to form pieces full length and about 3 inches thick. These pieces are available in soft, medium, firm, and extra firm. You order 3 pieces per side of a king or queen mattress so you can customize the feel. And, if it’s too soft or firm, you rearrange the sequence of layers to adjust. The cores come with a zippered enclosure so the end result looks like a regular mattress. They also have an enclosure that holds four layers. They have different foundations as well. We like these so much, we put a queen mattress in our guest room.

It's on the way, John. They said there is a slight delay? Of Course. I take it as a good sign that they can't keep up with the orders. I promise to let you and Blessed and Grateful as soon as we test it out. The one you showed is the one I ordered except as a Queen, I can barely catch Mrs. :1rotfl: NUCKY now. I'd never be able to on :1rotfl: A King Size Bed. I hope its a winner.

Just called T & N they said they got hit hard with orders over the Memorial Day Weekend with the $300 off. I said I'll try to hold my wife off from cancelling and they took off another $50 :boom: :clap2: Probably the end of next week. It's being shipped from North Carolina. I'm waiting for sure. :)

This is likely obvious to everyone except me, but I opted for a pillow top on my current mattress without considering that it makes it impossible to flip. You can only turn it.

The sagging and dents in the pillow top have convinced me it's time for a new one and I'm just going to go through Sam's Club. Free delivery and set-up, plus removal of old mattresses.

I'm not that particular, though, as long as the mattress is firm.

bobthegolfer 06-06-2019 06:15 PM

We went through three King Mattresses in 15 years. They always sagged after a couple years. These were "top of the line" Mattresses.
I have a lot of Back Issues (that require Injections three times a year) and I must have a firm mattress. Hubby likes a bit more softness on his side. We bought a Sleep Number. We don't read in Bed, so we decided we did not need one that splits and brings the Back up. We both have our own Remote and can adjust the bed as best for us. Mattresses range in price from $1,000 to way beyond. It's like anything else, the more Bells and Whistles you want, the higher the price. We have had our mattress for two years and love it! No sagging anywhere!!

One of the mattresses we considered was from Hampton Inn Online. When we went to N.J. for Christmas we took another route thru Virginia on Route 81. I couldn't remember the exact town but the lady on the phone named the towns where the Hotels were along Route 81 and we found it and she gave me the Exact Brand and model of the bed. It was a Sealy Tranquility Night 2 Split Box Spring and Double Sided Pillow Top Mattress that blew our Temperpedic out of the water. I swear I considered trying to clip it to the roof of the Hyundai and pull into New Jersey as a mix of The Beverly hillbillies and Sanford & Son.

Anyway, after all the effort this nice person put into helping me I was on the verge of giving her the order and asked about the return policy. DEAL BREAKER. It is constructed when you order it. NO RETURN. Damn. Maybe it's for the best. Their bed was about $1500. Definitely worth that much and more.

The Op eluded to this being tough, NOTHING but 100% accurate. Hope it isn't TUFF and the Wife Gives Me A Needle! :1rotfl::1rotfl:

We stayed at a hotel recently and the bed was so amazing that I took pics of the mattress label. I was planning to make some calls and see if I could buy the same set. When I read your post I looked at the pics I took and it is the same mattress you tried to buy. I am definitely going to look into it now. Thanks!

When I was speaking with what I thought was the Hampton Inn Bed Store the nice lady told me that the day I called the deal was better if I bought the same bed from The Hilton. Unusual to get someone so helpful but it was a pleasure to find someone who cared so much. I just couldn't take the chance of not being able to return a Dud. It could happen. She said it could be returned for no reason whatsoever. Good Luck, I hope it works out well for you. I'm jealous. ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz! :1rotfl:

manaboutown 06-06-2019 11:00 PM

I almost forgot, 15 or so years ago I bought at Nordstrom a king size Heavenly Bed, the bed used at Westin Hotels. It was quite comfortable and lasted some years. I went and stayed at a Westin before I bought the bed to see how well I slept on it.

My back always tells me when it is time to replace a mattress. Some mattresses have only lasted 3 - 4 years for me before they sagged too much to adequately support my back.

biker1 06-07-2019 07:30 AM

I believe the on-line "bed in a box" memory foam mattress are all pretty similar. They will each try to differentiate themselves from their competitors with different numbers of layers with different thicknesses. I believe the most important feature is the firmness. Most, if not all, have an exchange, or refund policy, if you are not satisfied. We have a middle firmness (out of 5 firmness choices) from Amerisleep with a Leggett and Platt adjustable frame. An adjustable frame, while not inexpensive, is worth considering.

OK, the bed is actually late by a few days but customer service knocked off $50. The next delivery date was supposed to be 6/15 so they actually beat their estimate.

The bed will be a beast to unbox if you are frail, for a lack of a better term so there is something to be said for White Glove Delivery and Set-Up. In the end, it appears to be a beautiful bed and I was supposed to wait at least 3 hours to wait for it to fully inflate. I made it about 10 minutes and took a little schnoozaroonie. They even included two pillows for free. They feel like the Posturepedic Pillows we bought some years back.

We will let the bed breath for the rest of the day and report back soon. Tuft & Needle Mint Queen $850 after the delay discount.
