Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Possible Spoilers.

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood (2019) - Rotten Tomatoes

I probably will not get to this one for a few days but it sure looks interesting.

Taltarzac725 07-29-2019 06:41 PM

About five people walked out from the Closed Captioned $5 showing at 1:00 PM this afternoon. Cursing and violence are kind of the norm in Quentin Tarantino movies.

I loved this movie. It is hard to say why without revealing spoilers. :bigbow::popcorn:

Go see it and wait a few weeks before posting anything about it, please.

I may go see it a few more times before it leaves the theater as it is quite a masterpiece of film making.

I understand it has a rather long running time. Maybe some folks left to go to the john.

They never came back. The Closed Captioning showings do not seem to be getting any crowds.

It did seem slow at times but it is one of those movies that you look back on the details and say "WOW"!

Saying more will spoil things for people.

collie1228 07-30-2019 07:47 AM

I have found every one of Tarantino's movies to be unintelligible on first watching (except for his best film, "Jackie Brown"). The crazy way he manipulates timelines is confusing at best, but after a couple watchings, seem to make sense. I know that's not much of a recommendation, but I while love "Jackie Brown", "Pulp Fiction" and "Django Unchained", I have no love for "Inglorious Basterds" or "Hateful Eight". I guess I would say his good work is great, and his bad work is very bad. I hope this one is a good one.

Judging from the ones you liked and those you did not I would not see you as enjoying this one. It is definitely in the Hateful Eight and Inglorious Basterds group.

We saw it last Friday. As stated above, long, slow and boring. No story line. The acting was great, otherwise no redeeming value.

biker1 07-30-2019 05:33 PM

I agree. Another gem by Tarantino.

Great buddy flick and his best since Pulp Fiction. Along with DiCaprio and Pitt there is an unbelievable supporting cast. Throw in a late 60's Los Angeles setting and a soundtrack to match and wait for the Academy Awards.

It should be up for a lot of Awards IMHO. And I loved some of the details in it. These are on February 9, 2020. 92nd Academy Awards - Wikipedia

Enjoyed this movie a lot. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margo Robbie gave great performances. Expect multiple Oscar nominations for this movie. Great soundtrack. Giving it 3.5 stars out of 4.

Great that you liked it. I may go see it again soon. It is one of those that you need to see again after viewing how everything played out.

What do you mean by closed captioned?

Lettering up on the screen.

Do you mean open captioning? I understand that closed captioning means that the lettering can be can be turned on and off by the viewer. So, while watching the movie could you turn it off? I would not want to go to a movie if it had lettering.

These are $5 and only shown on Mondays at usually the 2nd showing that day. You cannot turn the words on the screen off and they tell you that it is closed captioned when you buy the movie ticket.

So many references and easter eggs require a second viewing. The movie gets better the more I think about it.

I thought it was terrible. I did think the story (especially the ending) was clever, but the movie went down way too many "bunny holes" for me. I wonder how many of the 2:40 minutes were watching Brad Pitt driving a car. Zzzzzzz. Plus there were sections of the movie I thought were totally irrelevant. Maybe the director was trying to paint a more complete picture of that era of Hollywood. But for me... Meh... I could do without it.

I have the same reaction. You kind of have to be a movie lover to get all of the stuff Tarantino throws into the film.

Taltarzac725 08-27-2019 06:50 PM

Saw it again at the Barnstorm which has had a problem because of a water line break or something like since Monday. I went on $5 Tuesdays.

Had wanted to go see the new Gerald Butler movie but it was sold out by the time I got there.

It did get better with a 2nd viewing and I could take a potty break because I had seen it before.

Some of the same people seem to be cropping up in many Quentin Tarantino movies. From Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2 to The Hateful Eight the players -- or a few of them-- keep popping up. Quentin Tarantino - Rotten Tomatoes

WOW .. you actually watched it a second time.. I'd rather spend another 3 hours watching paint dry...

I happen to love movies and especially the works of directors who also seem to share the same passion of film. Tarantino knows movies extremely well and they are a lot of Easter eggs in his movies.

It was fairly crowded for having been open for a few weeks.

I may see this one a third time in the theater and will definitely buy the Blu-Ray/DVD.

Chi-Town 08-28-2019 09:38 PM

I would love to see it next time in 70mm. A friend of mine saw that format in Chicago and said it was unbelievable. Unfortunately, the other theaters that have it are in California, Canada, and New York. Good old celluloid is pretty rare.

Wait until the Academy Awards; so many nomination possibilites.

I would assume it will get a lot of Oscar nominations. Maybe even one for Brad Pitt.

Maya Hawke - Rotten Tomatoes

One of the actresses who plays one of the Charles Manson cult followers is the daughter of Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2's Uma Thurman and actor Ethan Hawke. Kill Bill was also directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Saw it for a second time and enjoyed it as much as the first, because.this time I was able to appreciate the cinema genius of Tarantino without attentively following the story line.

Here is the trailer for the movie. Please note that this is a restricted preview approved for appropriate audiences. Or as they say.... NSFW.

Finally went to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood today. While I don't love every one of Tarantino's movies, I'm a big Tarantino fan. A few of his movies are on my all-time-favorites list.

Like many QT fans, Pulp Fiction is my favorite. I've watched it many times and will likely watch it many more. The Kill Bill movies (even though QT considers the two movies to be one) are also great. Reservoir dogs was ahead of its time and I like it a lot also, even though the violence put me off a bit the first time I saw it...it was the first time I'd seen a QT movie and didn't know what I was getting into. Heheh.

I consider myself a QT fan because those movies rank among my favorites of all time. But his other movies...Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds, et. Al....have often left me not quite so impressed. I'm afraid I have to put One Upon a Time in Hollywood in that category.

Pulp Fiction and my other favorites were good enough the first time I saw them that I wanted to watch them again. Then they just kept getting better and better to me. But I really have little desire to watch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood again. It just didn't do it for me. I may try to watch it one more time when it's streamable just to catch all the Manson/Tate connections and such. But I thought it was drug out, tried to get just too cute with shot setup too often, focused way too much on feet and legs (does QT have a fetish about feet especially?? Heheh), and simply did not have the interesting plot elements that his best movies have had.

Oh well. My two cents. It doesn't diminish my admiration for the movies I mentioned above. But this movie could have been an hour shorter. Still not sure I'd have liked it that much.

I'll let you know if my opinion changes if I do get around to watching it a second time. :)
