Trump at Sharon on Tuesday.

This is probably going to be an area to avoid on that day.

billlaur 08-01-2019 03:38 PM

a historical event HERE IN THE VILLAGES...IT DOESNT GET ANY BETTER

Taltarzac725 08-01-2019 03:45 PM

It sounds like they vetted the people invited to this already so it looks like a done deal as far as who is going. Just going by what is on Facebook for the Sharon and The Villages Daily Sun.

OrangeBlossomBaby 08-01-2019 03:59 PM

CIA, Secret Service, FBI, aides, assistants, advisors, local, county, state police, all taking up the parking spaces, and blocking off access to and from the building for security reasons.

In most locations, there's plenty of real estate available to barricade off, so the locals can still come and go without too much inconvenience. This location though - it's gonna be a nightmare. Especially with golf courses closed due to excessive rain, Morse under construction in some spots and Buena Vista in other spots - be interesting to see how this goes just from a logistics point of view. Will they be able to keep Spanish Springs town square open the two hours before, during, and after the event, or will they have to clear the whole thing out? Will the golf cart bridge be open, or will they require it to be blocked off for security reasons?

No one knows now, and I won't be down there this week but I expect that if there was the insanity of traffic/backup/frustration that I'm thinking there might be, it'll be posted. Maybe on some other forum but it'll definitely be posted somewhere.

BobnBev 08-01-2019 04:04 PM

It'll be the tightest security that The Villages has ever seen. I'm predicting a total lockdown of the whole area.

He heard Bob Martin makes great lawn light signs and is picking one up for the White House. :coolsmiley:

Many of us will welcome him. Just as many would respect and be proud to have any president here.

What does that have to do with the concern I brought up? Which is - logistics, parking, access by Villager residents, visitors, and pass-through traffic in an already-congested area which - as someone pointed out - is happening on vendor night.

Whether I respect the president or not is 100% absolutely positively irrelevant.

The spray-tan thing was adding a touch of humor to what was a serious question.

manaboutown 08-01-2019 04:50 PM

Welcome to The Villages, President Trump!

It's pretty much a given that it's going to be a significant event. If the only kinds of posts allowed in this thread were people saying how excited they are that the president is coming to town, it would be a really really boring thread.

Thankfully, this is a discussion forum, where people are allowed to discuss things. The topic is the location of the event, which will be significant.

One aspect of this event is going to be logistics.

Do you have something to add to the topic?

This IS historic. Personally I would LOVE to go see ANY President (in or out of Office). I'm Independent and it would be an honor to personally view the Pres. Shame that it appears to be a fund-raising matter and not a rally or speech. How wonderful it would have been to have it in the Polo Field with thousands. I would have gone to see Pres Obama, Trump, or whoever is next in line... Too bad - coming all they way to TV, and the general "public" is shut out.

I agree and would enjoy being in any one of those audiences.

Okay. I edited out the offending 2 words to my previous post. The intention of the post, the actual question, the actual concern, stands. Perhaps we can return to civil discourse instead of taking what was a humorous two words of my usual long-winded posts, and turning them into another opportunity to take potshots at me, personally?

I really appreciate that and respect your decision.

We were there when President Bush was on Sumter Landing Market Square. Was a great time, and a memory to stand next to a President, whichever party.

Polar Bear 08-01-2019 05:51 PM

A presidential visit means lots of logistical issues...and related headaches for many who see it that way. It’s no different for The Villages than it is for any other location.

I think it would be more complicated because presidents don't typically show up in what amounts to little more than a single one-way traffic circle with a concrete slab in the middle, a strip mall on each of the four blocks facing it, and 6 narrow side-roads that feed in and out of the middle - three of which are against the sides and front of the Morse Performing Arts Center.

It's very concentrated traffic. When the president goes to New York City, the traffic is also a nightmare for hours before and after the visit.

Any time ANY president goes to a traffic-centric place, the risk to the president's life and health is through the roof. So they tend to close stuff off to the public and divert traffic around the venue.

In the case of Spanish Springs, there's not a lot of diverting you can do. The building faces the busiest section of that entire part of the Villages, with regards to traffic. The only way I can think of to minimize security risks would be to close it down completely for the standard 2 hours prior to his expected arrival and until he is well on his way out of the community.

That's why I was asking about it.

tophcfa 08-01-2019 06:03 PM

I guess I won't be swimming laps at the La Hacienda sports pool on Tuesday. Wish I could get a seat at the Sharon. Oh well, will read about it in Wednesdays paper.

I wonder if that was his preference or TV powers that be!?!

If GWB packed somewhere around 16K into Lake Sumter to see him back then, you would need the polo grounds to accommodate a Trump rally. There would be over 50K people there ! V.ery difficult logistics for a security etc

I'm guessing they will bring Trump in through the rear of the Sharon, via Morse and Paige. I wonder if they will keep the square open. That would be a real kick for Trump to come out and Blue Stone Circle announces while playing Hail to the Chief....."ladies and gentlemen..the President of the United States".

One can dream.

Velvet 08-01-2019 06:44 PM

Maybe the visit will disrupt traffic... but we’ll have something to talk about for a long time to come. “When the President was in TV.....”

Dond1959 08-01-2019 07:55 PM

When I worked in London out of the US Embassy Bush II was coming over for a visit. The British media really blasted him and were complaining on and on before the visit about traffic, costs, and other issues. Bush and Colin Powell came to visit the embassy staff and the First comment from the President was “everybody was worried about the traffic, I haven’t had a problem”. Classic Bush and the place erupted with laughter.

Bottom line is wherever a President goes there will be traffic and other headaches, you just have to deal with it the best that you can and try to stay out of the impacted area if possible.

OrangeBlossomBaby 08-01-2019 09:17 PM

Yes, I'm sure there will be a lot of traffic. But that wasn't the question, or the concern. It was whether or not they'd need to CLOSE roads and divert traffic, maybe close the Spanish Springs town square completely, or possibly even the golf cart bridge. and I also said that no one will know this information yet, and I said that I'm sure as someone does, it'll be posted on a forum, either here or elsewhere.

Midnight Cowgirl 08-01-2019 10:52 PM

Do ya think he'll stay overnight in one of the Lifestyle Visit houses?
There'd be enough bedrooms for the Secret Service to stay in the same house with him!!?!

Fredster 08-02-2019 04:40 AM

Having President Trump coming to The Villages is a very special occasion,
and dealing with a bit of extra traffic for awhile near
the Sharon will gladly be accepted by most folks in TV.
Welcome, President Trump!

I can't tell you how happy we are that we are in Michigan.right now. On another note, did you know that The Villages Parrotheads are the largest Parrotheads group in the world? So how come Jimmy Buffett hasn't come here yet?

Bay Kid 08-02-2019 06:15 AM

Great to have our President in our town.

TimeForChange 08-02-2019 06:59 AM

If there was any possible way to attend I would immediately write a check for $2000. My wife included. I don't understand why they would not sell some seats for donations to campaign.

I'm sure you are correct. I had the misfortune to be in Manhattan when Bill Clinton blew through town for a political event, and the entire midtown section was shut down. No cars, taxis, buses, etc. for about ten square blocks, and cops on every street corner. Simply ridiculous.

Nucky 08-02-2019 07:19 AM

The Leader Of The Free World is Coming To Our Community. Act Accordingly!

Can't you just imagine it sometime down the road? Why did the President go to OTOTW instead of The Villages? How do you act when you have company?

He might have come here without fanfare.

It is great that Trump is coming to TV.
As I said before, it is unfortunate the visit will not allow more residents to participate.
The decision was probably driven by opting to avoid the daily downpours and thunderstorms.

And the Sharon is a relatively safe location if they do A LOT of checking around the location before, during and after.

I kind of think they are here already looking around. I mean the Secret Service and other alphabet agencies.

Iowagirl2 08-02-2019 08:12 AM

Does any one know what time he will be in the area? I am moving to the villages from Georgia that day.
