Golfers that won't follow the rules
 

Why is it that golfers won't follow the rules on the golf courses.
I see them going on provide property , in ponds, driving on the greens , and not smoothing out the sand traps.
JEZZZZZZ!!!!
What is it the entitlement or they figure they can go where ever they want!

Mostly I suspect it is ignorance.

Golf should be enjoyable BUT there are rules to follow such as:
- If your ball is not in the line of flight of another player, go to your ball to speed up pace of play. Don't all congregate behind each golfer as they hit their shot!
- Park your cart on the cart path as marked, not in front of the green where in may be in the way of golfers hitting up. If you have the "privileges" ribbon or accomodation cuff, park near the backside of the green.
- Leave the green as soon as the last player has putted in. Better yet, if you are done, move to your cart.
- Putts a couple inches from the hole should always be conceded.
- Shaking hands, exchanging numbers, etc. are better done AFTER leaving the green.

These simple little things help make the round of those behind you more enjoyable..and your round too!

Sand your divots, rake the sand traps, repair your pitch marks on the green and last but not least DON"T drag your feet when you walk on the green. Several times I have followed someone that really scuffed up the greens around the pin. :)

I think these are the same people that walk their dogs without a leash and don't pick up their dogs poop. These are the elite members of our hometown.

Ignorance is only an legidiment excuse for new golfers during their first hand full of rounds. After that it is either stupidity or simply being lazy.

Some priority members think that gives them privileged/entitled status where they don't have to follow the rules.

If you see something, say something. Believe me, I ALWAYS do.

Unfortunately, a lot of the things mentioned above (other than driving on greens/private property/a few others) aren't really "Rules" as such...just "suggestions" for 'ready golf/proper etiquette.'

Therefore, the only way to change the habitual offenders is for the course to take some type of action that means something...and that is most likely never going to happen. :ohdear:

Making a group pick up and move ahead a hole or two, or banning them from playing for a few weeks if they are continually being warned...is about the only thing that MIGHT get their attention.

Even then, it most likely wouldn't be enough for a lot of these total flaming jerks...to make much of a difference :mad:

I Guess your right, But i can't understand when a ball goes off the course it is a dead ball! to go on someones property and invade there privacy bothers Me! if the ball is a couple feet in and you see it and retrieve it i don't have a problem with. But to trample through someones property and play hide and go seek is not acceptable.

I understand your frustration Chelleybean. I can't Golf anymore but really love Golf and all the nice things that go along with participating while on the course.

I started out Caddying for Free as a teenager. I learned the rules from other Caddies and from the Golfers I carried for. It was 50 years ago. Rules were there to be followed. Times have changed. It's sad.

We have a friend that we check on who lives in the wrong spot on a Championship Course. His house gets nailed all day long with Golf Balls off the Tee. He told us Twenty Years ago that people would leave a note or acknowledge the damage they caused but NEVER go on a hunt for the ball.

It isn't that way anymore.

People are not going to change for the better either. The Good Old Days Are A Memory as per our friend. What a great person he is. Sorry for rambling but I feel your pain.

We all have seen them. All we can do is educate them if we are so lucky enough to have to play with them.

I dont necessarily agree with all your comments, like parking our cart in front of the greens if you have a handicap cart, if the pin location is in the front or center position it is actually quicker to park your cart in front of the greens, it actually takes longer to drive all around the greens and then walk to the front or middle pin positions. Besides that, if you are the group behind, you should not hit your shots to the green until all players have gotten to their carts and have left the hole that they have completed. Remember golf is to be enjoyed by everyone, the course is not a racetrack to see how fast you can play, contrary to some popular belief. I also believe if my group is playing to my time par that is listed on the card, no person or group has any right to complain. I remember last year when we were playing at Stonecrest a group kept hitting into my group on 3 consecutive holes, I went to their ball and hit it back to there way but at a 45 degree angle to serve as a reminder to them after yelling at them the last 2 previous holes to be aware of where the group ahead of them is located. Finally we got there attention to be more cautious.

Doesn't Stonecrest have ambassadors/course rangers?
If so, you should have told them about the group hitting into your group. Hitting the ball back was a poor choice on your part.

Urban decay has infiltrated our golfing community .Dress code isn't enforced on golf course or the putting greens, ambassadors spend more time on cell phones parked under trees than telling groups to pick up the pace.
I have seen carts drive across greens people with pull carts doing the same
Pools people are starting to smoke vape and whatever. When was the last time your ID at the pool was checked ? There was time it was almost annoying
The focus is on the build in Fenny area were old hat .

THANK YOU for your sympathy, your are correct the old days are gone.However a lot of the 60 to 70 year olds are the violators of the rules. The ambassadors are useless and they have told me they have no authority and if they discipline these golfers they get in trouble. I have a friend that has a house on a champion course that suffers the same as your friend and the course was designed wrong and the lots to close to the course fairway.
The golfers think they can go where ever they want on to private property.
The cops come there frequently i heard to discipline the golf course and golfers and have gone as far as trespass people off the property to get there attention. I also heard the cops are fed up with all the bad behavior on these courses and it ties up alot of there resources. I am told by my friend that the police have arrested players on the course for fighting among themselves over the game. Unbelievable, you can't make this stuff up. These are adults in there 60's and 70's that should know better!

Stay out of yards. White sticks indicate the property on the other side is private. While I don’t care if u pick up your ball, I do not want u hitting out of my yard. I’m the one that has to replace the sod.

Friends of ours played with a stranger who was added in to make up foursome. When our friend noticed he wasn't raking the sand traps, he said something to him about the rule (nicely). The guy replied, "I'm paying $3500 a month rent here. I'm not raking any sand trap."

Biggest problem I have is slow play. Just yesterday my threesome teed off at Havana (Kilimanjaro) at 1:00. Holes 1 thru 4 we played without delay, didn't even see any group in front of us. As soon as we went through the Buena Vista tunnel to the 5th hole. There was a group on the green, a group in the fairway, a group on the tee and a second group on the tee waiting in their cart. We waited 25 minutes at the fifth tee before we could go. I asked the Ambassador when he came by, what was the delay, he said the 11:56 group was holding everyone up. However, we asked if he had talked to them, he said, they are on time, you're allowed 2+15 minutes to play that nine.

Some of the retirees in TV referred to in prior posts are new to the game of golf or very rarely played golf prior to retirement. Yes, they should go to “good golf school” which is regularly offered here in TV. From my personal observations, most of the instances of poor golf etiquette occurs on the Executive Courses but occasionally on Championship Courses too. There are a few who know the so called “golf rules” but lack patience on our courses. Having said that, it’s still a wonderful game and one that many can play years after we retired. Fore!

Is there a sign of the age of golfer on the cart, so you can make that determination of that 60 & 70yo are the bad golfers. Or just guesstimate on your part because they look younger due to better lifestyle. What kind of golfers are the 40 to 60yo?
Then again the I Heard conversation is the most reliable source to some.

Twice in the last couple of months my group has followed a foursome on "Men's Day" on championship courses, and it was a disaster. Why, when a foursome is playing a scramble, does it take over five hours for them to play 18? It's because they take forever to putt out. You would think they are playing for thousands of dollars. The ambassadors laugh about it, and they will commiserate with you, but since there are several foursomes in a row playing in the same obnoxious way, they can't do anything about it. Time to end Men's Day?

The ambassadors here are nice people who keep you hydrated and make sure you have sand for your divot bottle. Occasionally they will try to move along a group.

Up north they were marshals/rangers and were enforcers with some teeth. The starter set the tone for quick play. Raking the traps and fixing divots and ball marks were a given for the players. More of golf etiquette than fear of reprisals. Of course, that was always in the background. But grumpy starters and enforcer rangers were secondary compared to those angels of mercy, the drink cart girls.

I agree with most of the comments about slow play, not fixing ball marks, raking traps, and going onto private property to retrieve
balls. I hope when you are fixing your ball mark, your are fixing two more as well. I know it is easier to b**ch about it, but it takes very little effort to fix. I will not go on to private property to get a ball. But if I can stand on the course an reach the ball with a 3 iron, I will retrieve it. I have never lived on a golf course and have no desire to. So it constantly amazes me when those who do complain about golf balls coming into their yards. Especially here in TV where the lots are so close to the course. These people had to know what they were signing up for?

Here is my point; if you are not a golfer and was not told when purchasing a golf view lot, no one in the villages tells you what to expect.
Since Golf is such a prestigious game, it is also assumes it is a gentleman and lady respected sport. However you believe people are of character which is the farthest from the truth.
as a non golfer you would assume you might get golf balls on your property, but to have the disrespect of some golfers to brazenly defy the rules is not assumed.
So be careful what you assume people are aware of.
As the old saying goes you don't know what you don't know, and the Villages is not going to volunteer that information or they would not sell golf viewed lots at a very heavy premium!
Just my 2 cents!

You would have to be really naïve to think buying on a golf course would not involve dealing with golfers.
We are all big boys and girls and have to think for ourselves.
They do not have my sympathy...…...

Friends of ours live by a golf course and both are avid golfers, however don't come into her yard to recover a ball. In the past she has had flowers and shrubs damaged by morons with no manners or consideration looking for their ball. You would rather mess with a mama bear and her cubs than our friend.

A couple months ago, while playing Cane Garden, I pulled a tee shot heard the unpleasant sound of the ball finding a Lanai. I went searching and then saw a guy sitting on his Lanai, I asked him if it was his house I hit....it was. I apologized and asked if I caused any damage, he said no and thanked me then showed me where the ball was and told me to get it. I was one of the only golfers that did that, he said most never drive anywhere near his house after they hit it. Why?

I played Cane Garden some time ago in a foursome, and during that 18 holes, I fixed 72 ball marks; these weren't just little skid marks, they were mid to high shots coming in with no attempt at being repaired. :swear::swear:

Bravo and i applaud you.we all know accidents happen. The norm is run the other way and deny it.These are adults 60 to 80 years old.
One of the golfers sent his grand kid to retrieve the ball. The neighbor was in the lanai listening where they couldn't see him. The golfer said quick quick before they see you. The kid was around 15 years old. Nice example he sent to his grandson. Unbelievable. You cant make this stuff up.

NEVER PLAY OR RETRIEVE A BALL FROM THE YARD OF A RESIDENT. REPORT ANY DAMAGE OF PRIVATE PROPERTY TO THE HOMEOWNER.

PLAYING IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED BEYOND THE PROPERTY LINE OF OUR RESIDENT HOMES, EVEN IF NOT DESIGNATED BY WHITE OUT-OF-BOUNDS STAKES.
