Exactly right...almost unimaginable!!

And to think that it might last for up to two days...simply boggles the mind.

Even if I was sitting in the best prepared location on any of the islands, I can't even fathom having the wind screaming, rain by the feet and watching a potential 20 ft. storm surge, come onto an island that's highest points are about 10'-15' above normal sea level...for that long of time.
:ohdear:

On Edit: As was pointed out in another thread, this is incorrect, as this height above sea level actually only applies to Abaco's largest community...Marsh Harbor.

Facts matter.
:ho:

Andrew vs. Dorian

According to Google, the top speed of Hurricane Andrew was 174 MPH, so it looks like Dorian has broken that record. That is certainly not a good record to break.

This thing is the mother of all storms. Praying for the People in the Bahamas. Hoping it makes a northeast turn very soon and never hits the USA mainland!

JimJohnson 09-02-2019 04:11 AM

We are so far inland, we will feel very very little effect at all from this storm.

rjn5656 09-02-2019 06:18 AM

Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected.

JimJohnson 09-02-2019 06:53 AM

Does thoughts and prayers help?

Frankly, I have to agree with that sentiment. Are you praying to the same entity that caused the horrific weather event in the first place?

Bay Kid 09-02-2019 07:14 AM

Put your arm out a car window doing 80 MPH. Now double that. Scary.

If they did we wouldn't have any more shootings.

TheWarriors 09-02-2019 08:39 AM

I thank God every day that he gave me the free will to choose between good and evil and if you can find something wrong with a person keeping someone “ in their thoughts and prayers”, you are in need of some deep soul searching. I will also keep those affected in my thoughts and prayers.

I don't wish to scare you even more, but the force is calculated using the square of the speed, so a 160 mph wind has FOUR times the force of an 80 mph wind.

Topspinmo 09-02-2019 04:47 PM

And where did the measure this speed? From the aircraft? In the eye wall 20 to 30 thousand feet up? I wouldn’t thing at ground level the wind that strong? If so there might be nothing left but sand and even that might get blown away?

Yung Dum 09-02-2019 07:06 PM

Will the Bahamas exist after this?

Let's hope so. :(

I just can't stop thinking about what it would be like, being stuck in a high EF-3/low EF-4 tornado...
FOR 36 HOURS!! :ohdear:

Bad enough being in one for just a few hours, when you know it will be passing soon, but stationary...

The Great Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 (formally known as Hurricane Three) was the most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall on record in terms of pressure, and tied with Hurricane Dorian for the strongest landfalling Atlantic hurricane by maximum sustained winds, with winds of 185 mph (295 km/h) at landfall.
