Accident at Canal/Stillwater gate.

Don't know what happened, but it was just inside the Canal gate. One car on it's side with a crushed front end, the other one in someone's yard.
Looks pretty bad.
They are not letting traffic thru.

I hope no one was seriously hurt.

saratogaman 06-15-2010 10:20 AM

Where on Canal?

Mintjulep 06-15-2010 10:47 AM

Just inside the gate at Stillwater...

graciegirl 06-15-2010 11:01 AM

Please keep us updated. I hope no one was hurt too.

Pturner 06-15-2010 04:22 PM

Any word? I would be relieved to know if everyone involved is ok.

Mintjulep 06-15-2010 04:46 PM

From what we heard, reports from eye witnesses said the guy coming up Canal (toward town) was going 60 or 70mph, hit the car that had just come thru the gate head-on. The guy was ok, walking around. Took about 45 mins. to get the 2 women out of the other car that was turned on it's side tho. The 2 women were awake and talking but don't know their condition. The impact happened near Goose Creek Rd., but the cars skidded about 200 ft., almost to the gate, leaving debris along Canal.
One of the cars was in a yard about 10 or 15 ft. from the house.

Hopefully the story will be in the paper tomorrow.

I sometimes get a little lax with my seatbelt for the 6 block trip to town, but this was a wake up call for me.

Where are the cops when you need them to catch the speeders. Lately I have seen cars going 50 to 60 miles an hour on Buena Vista and Bailey Trail and no cops around. I noticed alot of the speeders are the landscapers. Something has to be done.

EdV 06-16-2010 06:10 AM

Perhaps the speeder's car was a late model Toyota.

Golf2140, this is my first post. I have enjoyed reading the many threads and posts on TOTV for quite some time. I've gained valuable information about The Villages from all you wonderful people. I am a Snowbird right now. We bought our villa a year ago. I respectfully take issue with the comment that a horrible accident must have been attributed to a snowbird. I have occasionally heard remarks about the inconvenience that snowbirds cause the full timers. We are very much part of the success story of The Villages. Many more homes would be unsold and would possibly lead to a slower growth rate. I love the Villages and cannot wait for my return. I 've met many wonderful people and wish to meet many of you. No disrespect intended.
I apologize if i strayed from the thread. I do hope no one was seriously injured.

BobKat1 06-16-2010 11:43 AM

I thought the banter between re-tire and Golf2140 was all in jest....

Army Guy 06-16-2010 11:57 AM

Heck I have seen cars going 50-60 down Canal and passing slower cars along the way!

Army Guy

graciegirl 06-16-2010 11:59 AM

Welcome Bloomer. What a clever name!! Looking forward to meeting you.

I think those two were just joking around too.

Although I know that it is much calmer and easier to get around in the summer.

I am a snowbird too,working on becoming a frog.

The Great Fumar 06-16-2010 12:14 PM

Canal st. race track !!!!

I no longer use Canal St. because of the speeders .....One day in March I was doing 36 mph in my golf cart and was passed by two morris minors..

Oh the shame of it all ................:ohdear:

Nice to see you posting, Bloomer...and do know they were joking. It's sort of like "How did I get elected to this particular club office?" says someone who didn't attend a meeting and finds out he now holds an office for the club. "Well, you weren't here so we picked you!" responds another. Without our seasonal residents The Villages wouldn't be quite the same. We love them, but on occasion, they get picked on...and it's said with admiration.

Hurry back, we'll keep the light on in the window...but do be careful if you're on Canal or Buena Vista!

Pat

thank you

Thank you GG and Pooh for your warm welcome. I guess as I was reading this thread about a horrible accident I had a knee jerk reaction about the snowbird comment. I know that no offense was intended. And yes, I'm always careful on Canal, Camino Real and all the round abouts. Any word on the condition of the women involved in the accident?

Bloomer,

Some of our best friends are birds. We kid them all the time. Please lighten up. We in TV are here to kid and have fun. Welcome.

What spooks me is that I was meandering along in my oh-so-legal golf cart on Canal Street just minutes before this accident supposedly happened!

Do you suppose my beaming face caused it? :a20:

Can you imagine my shock to get a call yesterday from my favorite villager who lives in a home across from ours telling me she was in a horrible accident last week on Canal and Stillwater? My first thought was this thread and realizing she was the driver in the overturned car! She went home from the hospital the same day. It is amazing she walked away from it based on what I have read here and what she told me. She had to be removed through the windshield. The person who hit her was speeding as many have said and tried to get around her in the golf cart lane.

All I can say is, Thank God she is ok! We have become fast friends in a short period of time and even with distance between us have kept in touch. I could not imagine how sad it would have been to return next month and not have her there.

Oh Carm!

How shocking to hear that your friend was the one in the accident. I am glad she is going to be better. I understand your feelings. My next door neighbor in Hadley after just two years is as close as family to me.

redwitch 06-21-2010 08:36 PM

Thank you for letting us know she is okay. It is amazing how quickly we make friends here (not just acquaintances).

I do wonder what the idiot was thinking who was in such a rush he would try to pass on the right. It's fortunate he hit a car and not a golf cart -- the results would have been much more tragic.

Accident

The woman who was in the auto accident on Canal is doing amazingly well. She is very badly bruised and wearing a neck brace but overall in fine shape.Didn't need any hospital stay in fact she came to the Colony Pool today to say hello to her exercise friends. She was the only one in the car. She didn't say anything about the man that hit her. We all told her she is in great physical shape and all the prayers heading her way will help her get back to all her activities here in The Villages.

Let me correct what happened.
The Toyota was also heading towards town. There was only one person in it. The car was hit in the right rear corner. She was wearing her seat belt.
She was pushed and spun for 151 Ft. and the car then flipped and slid some more.
I am trying to contact the eye witness as he is claiming that it wsa her fault
Can anyone help!

F16 1UB 07-01-2010 04:30 PM

WHAT? Okay so it's her fault because she was in his way as he was allegedly speeding. Must have been physics that knocked her vehicle 151 ft.

Seeing as the driver who was ticketed was NOT the woman whose car was hit, spun around and flipped, it seems the police determined whose fault it was by ticketing the driver of the other car.

I am not surprised he is claiming it is her fault. That's his only defense.
Anyone who has the (you fill in the blank) to drive at a high rate of speed in that location, rear end another vehicle, flip it on its side and send it another 150"+, has an attitude. He probably has never been wrong.

I agree with carm310. The police have already made the call.

meridana 07-01-2010 08:02 PM

ticket??

How do you know he was cited?

She should not have been backing up at 60mph. Ask the guy, he'll tell you.:22yikes:

Her Fault??

This sounds kinda like when redwitch got hit by a car while dog-walking...remember that one?

Yeah, and it was Red's fault because everybody knew what time the villian left her house. :loco:
