POA Forum Is History

Following is a quote from the POA web site:

"The POA Forum has been discontinued. For infromation on The Villages, and their associated forum, the POA recommends Talk of The Villages."

That forum had very little activity, therefore, its demise.

Their quote implies TOTV is an associated forum of The Villages. Where did they get that impression? (That's a rhetorical question.) The admin of TOTV has made it abundantly clear it is in no way "associated" with The Villages Developer.

Hi Downeaster,
Thanks for the news. The POA is/was independent of the developer. My guess is that the POA recommended TOTV because it is an independent voice not associated with the developer.

villages07 06-15-2010 09:21 PM

The rest of the POA website is intact. Looks like they only discontinued the discussion forum (very low activity). It was nice of them to give TOTV a plug and a link ... although their wording does imply that TOTV is an official arm of "The Villages".

tony 06-15-2010 09:35 PM

It is correct that Talk of The Villages is not associated with The Villages
developer. We and our members value our independence.

I think the POA knows this, also, and the wording on its web site was just an
unfortunate juxtaposition. It happens, like a misplaced modifier.

I wanted to state this clearly so nobody thinks we are hiding behind members'
supporting comments. This is straight from the horse's mouth. (Careful there,
people)

Did anybody ever wonder about that talking horse that knows all that stuff?

Please furnish other examples of "misplaced modifiers" similar to the POA's.

Hi Chuck,

I'll help. For some reason I just can't resist a question if I think I might be able to give an answer. Sometimes I know I act like I must think I am some kind of librarian or schoolmarm or whatever.

Anyway, 'bout dem misplaced modifiers.......a long time ago here on TOTV, uujudy introduced us to a great site called "Grammar Girl." And when I saw your question, I went to that site and found a whole bunch of stuff about misplaced modifiers. Here it is.....

http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com...modifiers.aspx

And I promise that I will not give you a test. Well, at least I will try really, really hard not to give you a test. I promise.

Chuck,

Examples:

Do you just want a few? or Do you want just a few?

mulligan 06-19-2010 09:16 AM

I only want just a couple.

bkcunningham1 06-19-2010 09:37 AM

Incorrect: The post was deleted by the Talk Host with disinformation.
Correct: The post with disinformation was deleted by the Talk Host.

Before we continue with this lesson, I must ask you to clear any information about misplaced modifiers from your mind, if you have any.

graciegirl 06-19-2010 09:55 AM

:ohdear:

Oh Lord.

Please spare me from feeling so dumb associating with all of these English Majors.

Amen

Do, just, you want a few?

tony 06-19-2010 11:34 AM

I think both the Incorrect and the Correct examples there are really correct.

As for the mind? I am looking still? I still am looking? I am still looking?

This discussion brings back memories of a song with a line like this:

"I threw my father from the train a kiss"

I can not remember any more of it. That may be a good thing.

That sounds like German sentence structure.

And if you speak Rhode Island: Throw your father upstairs the keys!

I believe it was. That was back when jokes and songs could get away with such behavior. If I remember correctly, it was about a kid going off to summer camp.

It seems now that seniors are the only unprotected species when it comes to being the subject of jokes.

Wow, this thread has certainly got off the tracks. Should I say derailed?

Your behavior is fine with me. Our college student granddaughter completed her spring quarter in Austria and returned here to Cincinnati a couple weeks ago. We tease her about "thinking" in German. Those are the kinds of things she is saying recently.

P.S. I love it when the thread gets derailed. It probably annoys Tony though.

What an interesting discussion! I don't recall discussing (much less thinking about) misplaced modifiers in the past 40 or 50 years, yet here we are, stretching our little gray cells and learning something new so we can astound everybody at the next block party. :throwtomatoes: Or not.

Boomer, I actually watched the video about the new punctuation mark at your Grammar Girl link. :22yikes:

What was the modifier that the POA misplaced?

Sit right here with me.

Talk Host 06-20-2010 06:48 AM

Ah, but what about gerunds?

JLK

tony 06-20-2010 07:30 AM

Geez, all I said way back there is that it happens, LIKE a misplaced modifier. It was just an innocent hyperbolic gerundism, until the English majors got ahold of it.

Whalen 06-20-2010 07:46 AM

Soccer anyone?

Boy o Boy, talk about soccer being boring (no offense Russ) I think TOTV wins hands down...GERUNDS??????

bkcunningham1 06-20-2010 08:00 AM

I think the issue here is the juxtaposition of the statement made by the POA about TOTV stance in regards to information about TV. The misplaced modifier and the gerund are incidental to the original discussion. Also, a gerund must end in the suffix -ing in order for the verb to become a verbal and act as a noun.

Yeah, well, you think it's been boring around here? Wellllllll, I will show you boring.......

I have a really sore throat. I feel like my throat is going to come out through my ears. I have a temperature. I do not have time for this. It has been going on for a few days even. And now it is Sunday. And now I think I am going to have to go find a Doc-in-a-Box. The Doc-in-a-Box will give me antibiotics. I get all weirded up about taking antibiotics. I rarely take them. I gotta be really hurting before I take antibiotics. It is a beautiful day and I am a whiny butt with a sore throat. And did I tell you that I have a temperature? And did I tell you how much I hate to take antibiotics? But I think I am going to have to. And did I tell you about my sore throat and how bad it hurts? Or is it badly???

And also, when Judy said that thing about the link having a video about a new punctuation mark, I tried to see the video, too. And I could not get it to play. And now there is a punctuation mark out there that I have never heard of. And I cannot play the video. And I am devastated. And, yeah, I know that I bastardize the heck out of punctuation marks, but I know I am doing it and I do not care. And I also write in sentence fragments. And I like doing that. Yes. I do.

And also, I know Mr. Tony, Mr. Admin, Sir is an English major. He is always trying to fake us out about that. But he has to be an English major. Did you see him use the word 'juxtaposition' a few posts back? Didya? Didya? Huh? And he started this whole thing about modifiers. And I don't think it is a problem with a misplaced modifier anyway. I think it's an awkward sentence structure that just needs a little clarification and a better word choice than 'associated.' - - (And now for a shameless confession. I, Boomer B. Boomer, read the POA newsletter online sometimes. I don't know what happened to their forum, but the newsletter is still there I think. And I will continue to read it. Yes! I will! I know nothing is perfect. I like a little balance in my information. I think balance is a good thing. I am a Libra. Yes. I am. We like balance. I always buy chairs in pairs.)

Soooo, how's that for boring.....

Boomer -- face down in the stream of consciousness again...and did I tell you that I have a sore throat and a fever? Yes. I do.

bkcunningham1 06-20-2010 08:51 AM

Boomer, I am sorry to hear you are under the weather. I hope you are feeling better soon. Here's something to pass the time until you shine again like the sun. Reading is good medicine for a sore throat, that is, if it is done silently.

I agree in triplicate. The POA point of view is often in conflict with mine but it serves a purpose.

Hope you are on the mend, Boomer.

Boomer 06-20-2010 09:58 PM

After my fevered, boring post earlier today, Mr Boomer and I ventured out to find a Doc-in-a-Box. The Doc-in-a-Box we found looked like the doctor in those Norman Rockwell paintings. And, of course, if a doctor steps right out from a Norman Rockwell painting and tells you that you need to do something, well – you do exactly what he tells you to do. And so I am taking an antibiotic. I really do believe that I feel better already. So if I am going to write any other fevered posts, I guess I had better hurry.

Boomer

uujudy 06-21-2010 09:28 AM

Talk Host, Gerunds? Really? I think you might be a little bit of a troublemaker. . . :jester:

BKCunningham, You definitely win the prize! :eclipsee_gold_cup:
Thanks for the definition AND the link to Raya's Dungeon. I especially enjoyed the dungeon of Mutilating Modifiers and Damaging Dirty Dangling Participles!

Boomer, I'm sad that you couldn't play the video in your feverish state. Boo Hoo

And now I'm going to sit with Chuck and Gracie.

zcaveman 06-21-2010 11:45 AM

Tony - you know how you have a trash can for deleted posts on the listing view? Maybe you should have an icon for hijacked post.

It is not that I don't mind the banter but it detracts from the subject matter.

And yes - I know I am just as much to blame.

Lucky you, I am not an english major and I often have my modifiers in the wrong place. Living with a Hawaiian has made it worse. Alot of statments in Asian languages have the qualifiers at the end, as a result people who grew up speaking hawaiian pigin, often put the modifiers and qualifiers at the end of the statement and you have to kind of guess what they mean. My husband has worked hard over 30 plus years and his grammer has really gotten much better, however mine has gotten worse.

I wonder how many mistakes I made in that blurb.

tony 06-21-2010 03:52 PM

What does your husband do, sweep all the adjectives in a paragraph into a pile at the end?

TrudyM 06-21-2010 04:43 PM

My husbands english is great now.

The bigest mistake Hawaiians use is they use the word "for" when they mean "to". People are always saying " We go for eat." instead of We are going out to eat." Or they double up like. The kind is more better. (means the thing a ma jig is alot better than that one.) Alot of Hawaiians can speak correct english if they want to it is just slang and a habbit, but others who grew up only hearing pigin have to work hard to speak correctly. Sort of like Ebonics.

But an example would be the call I got this week from my brother inlaw.
Larry there? I need for talk later. What time is 4 or three , before or after?

He means, Is Larry home. I will call back later. Is the time differnce 3 or 4 hours and is it earlier or later there?

Pturner 06-21-2010 07:14 PM

Gerundit! When I'm not misplacing my modifiers, I'm loosing my marbles.
