New Years eve

Has anyone heard if they will have the priority seating for New Year’s Eve on the squares. I keep hearing rumors that the tree lighting priority was scrapped or it is sold out?

Brownwood VIP tent last I read was it sold out, there were only 50 seats. If it's anything like last 4th of July at Brownwood, the tent sits back between the bleachers. A lousy vantage point and when I looked at the tent, I only saw people sitting around in a circle talking to each other and I didn't seem interested in what was happening. With the Hooligans playing at Brownwood New Year's Eve, I can't imagine people trying to socialize, they are good but loud. Here's a photo of the VIP tent from the 4th.

I don't think New Years Eve has been celebrated on the square...I don't recall any such celebration since 2007.

Makes sense. We all know what folks do on New Years Eve,....than pour them into their golf buggies with NO sides and throw them out for some deadly dodge-em???

villagetinker 11-30-2019 10:38 AM

I have not seen any celebrations at the squares for New years eve, many of the restaurants have special arrangements setup, probably sold out now but you can check, city fire was great when we moved here but tailed off and we have not gone for the last 3 years.

My wife and I plan to have exclusive priority seating to ring in the new years. We will be sitting in our bathing suits on the stairs entering our pool, with a cold skinny margarita in a plastic cup, with our border collie lifeguarding for us. We can't wait to ring in the new year in the Villages : ) Here is hoping 2020 is an awesome year for everyone.

We plan on watching the ball drop on the morning news shows.

Even when we were younger, New Years Eve was never a big deal for us. Restaurants would scale down their menus, jack up the prices, and too many people, young and old, seemed intent on seeing just how drunk they could get. Trains and busses were always jammed, and cabs were at a premium. We called it “amateur night”.

We made an exception in 1999. We were in Chicago and went out to see if the world was really going to end with all the y2k hysteria.

I haven’t heard about the Squares offering any special New Year celebrations or programs, but if they did, we’d likely pass anyway. I know some folks are really up in arms over the “vip” seating for certain events, but there’s obviously a market for it, otherwise they wouldn’t do it.

ree lighting.

Brownwood tree lighting was good. sad they didn't have the candles this year. when I was there I only saw about 6 people in the vip tent. to me it wasn't worth that kind of money. I had a good seat and was able to see most of it.

I was one of the people involved in making sure the world did not end (Y2K), I was on call the entire evening, could not have a drink, etc., also had to stay in touch.....so I sat in front of the TV, and watched new years eve in other countries, etc to see if anything was going on there. I had worked on making the lights did not go out for over 18 months prior, glad the work paid off.

Thanks for your efforts, I remember the Y2K scare. I went out an bought a generator just in case all the scary hype turned out to be true. As it turns out, the generator was not needed for the turn of the century, but it has come in handy often since then during storm induced power outages.

I’m guessing they will do the same thing for NY Eve - charge the homeowners for as much as they can

THEY don't have any planned festivities on New Years Eve at any of the squares. They have not had any for the more than dozen years we have lived here.

People are going to have to get drunk and stagger around or try to drive in other locations.

The squares were free for the TREE LIGHTING. ALL THREE OF THEM. Two have VIP tents that seat a limit of 50 people. Look at this picture of all the people who didn't PAY for the tree lighting at Brownwood.

Can anyone in The Villages stay up that late? Not me.

I will be sitting with my laptop, fingers hovering over the keys. At midnight, my favorite campground will start accepting reservations for next summer and I will snag my favorite spot on the river. Once I have secured my site, it's off to bed with the following thought running through my head, "The days are long. The years are short."

Ben Grauer died in 1977. When he died, New Year's Eve died with him!

1st night in Boston was a wonderful place and way to bring in the New Year when we lived there. Very kid friendly and enjoyable for young and old

What are your memories of celebrating New Years Eve when you were...….younger?

We got dressed up; him, suit and tie, me something sparkly and dressy and usually went to a party hosted by friends, equally dressed up and had yummy snacky foods and alcoholic drinks and lots of conversation and went home quite tipsy before one o'clock.

When we had children old enough to drink and still under our influence, we insisted that they went to where they were going and stayed there for the night so as not to drink and drive.

No, it's 10:30. The advertisement for Katie Belles NYE party with Rocky and the Rollers said the music was until 10:30. Does that mean everybody leaves at 10:30 or you just sit there for 90 minutes?

Last dance/drink 10:30 PM?

We still do midnight.....and some times more.....going to bed early is for the elders....we are only in our early eighties :a040:

Two Bills 12-07-2019 06:58 PM

Nowadays asleep at least one and a half hours before midnight!

Back in the day, partied all night, went to work legless.
Think I slept until it was time to go round the pub and recover.
To the best of my memory, I think they said I had a good time!

asianthree 12-07-2019 10:24 PM

We always took call on New Years Eve. We celebrated at Midnight, and saw the New Year right through til 0700.

SHIRLEY YOU JEST! :1rotfl::1rotfl: Last time we made it till midnight there was an entertainer named PitBull in Miami. What a show. He has Old School Rappers on. We don't listen to Rap but this was Unbelievable. Felt like it knocked 30-35 years off. It felt great!

:icon_wink: The year the Waterfront Hotel opened the Mrs. and myself spent the night on New Years Eve after a nice night on the square. Never drove to a hotel in a golfcart before. Just an overnight bag and a cooler. Home in the morning. It's nice to spoil yourself ever now and then. :icon_wink:

Has anyone seen the Sling commercial where the wife is cozied up on the couch with the garage door opener taped to her ankle and she says she is on house arrest and her husband is dressed up to go out?

That's me.
