Favorite fun sports car

I plan to buy a new fun convertible sports car this year. So many choices. Give me ideas!

Altavia 01-11-2020 08:24 AM

Miata's are a blast, especially with a manual.

I'd lean towards the retractable hardtop over the softop, easier to keep clean. The softop is manualy operated, can be hard to close from inside the car if you have shoulder problems.

Nucky 01-11-2020 08:35 AM

Any Mini Cooper should do the trick. Preferably a Convertible. Very affordable!

billethkid 01-11-2020 08:40 AM

Any Corvette from 1998 to 2019...convetrible or coupe. The coupe with the roof out is not much different than a convertible.

And now with everybody hot to trot for the newly released 2020 mid engine Vette, there are many good deals on current Vettes.

John_W 01-11-2020 09:44 AM

Most of those are small cars, and I like American, the Corvette is perfect but you didn't give a budget. I had a 2017 50th Anniversary Camaro and that car was fun to drive. Here's a 2020 Convertible and it can be yours for $38K. Great interior, make sure you get leather.

Also it would be fun to knock around in TV with a Jeep Wrangler. If you want to really get the wind, take the doors off.

Get few years old MB SL500 Or BMW they loose 75% of there retail price, but make sure 100K maintenance has been done. Or expect to shell out $$$$$. I would be gun shy of mini’s with over 80k miles and Chrysler convertible’s. IMO best bang for the buck 5.0 mustang or 6 years or older corvette if you can crawl in and out of them? You should of went to auction in Kissimmee first couple days some fantastic deals on vette’s.

Dang. You are making me miss my early TR4 and my Jeep Commando. I miss them, but Katrina didn't.

We love the used BMW 330CI that we bought through the classified adds in TOV.

We always wanted one that we could "get out" without embarrassing ourselves. Finally sold sl when that was not possible, giggle!

Nissan 370Z Roadster... great deals on low mileage ones all the time... and when you pull up to an intersection, not everybody has one like some cars you see... :1rotfl:

Whatever you choose, make sure you get a red one. Red is the fastest color...

Nucky 01-11-2020 09:06 PM

Spoiler, our kids had 350Z’S. Those cars are definitely special. Couldn’t catch em in my Mini. Don’t discount the Mini. At least give it a test ride. It’s like a cross between a car a cart and a go cart.

I can understand the American Muscle Car appeal.

The Mini is a fine ride, but at 6’-6” and 360 lbs, I would barely fit in it

Luv2Bretired 01-11-2020 09:22 PM

I was driving behind a pea green Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2 yesterday. It sounded great! Tight fit and hard to get into and out of though.

But for an easily affordable fun sporty car my choice would be a Camaro SS. Camaro SS: Performance Overview | Chevrolet

I already have 2 Miatas, 10th AV and 2015 hard top convertible. Love them but want to make a change. Great ideas. Keep them coming.

Buy a mustang convertible. Great car

Rmiller622 01-12-2020 08:05 AM

I have a beautiful BMW 228i Convertible.
One thought...these cars are low to the ground. If you have back issues you will need to reconsider. Never have the top up - in The Villages, it’s topless!!

drpepper 01-12-2020 08:43 AM

I've had Camaros, Corvettes and many streetrod convertibles but the most fun was our Wranglers with the top and doors off.

IndianaJones 01-12-2020 08:56 AM

350Z or 370Z - lots out there with low mileage (My ‘06 had less than 20k miles on it), amazing power & fun to drive!!!

Fastskiguy 01-12-2020 09:24 AM

If you have $70K and can pick yourself up off of the ground....my recommendation is 2020 corvette all day long.

But that jeep idea is a good one :)

Janice4207022 01-12-2020 09:30 AM

I have a mint 560sl Mercedes 1979 with 83000 miles I no longer drive looking for A good owner - let me know if you are interested 352-205-6220

Sports car.

I have a Corvette convertible with a 6 speed manual, love it. Also the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky are fun cars.

MTHeineken 01-12-2020 10:23 AM

Have owned over 25 cars in my lifetime that included many sports cars from a Fiat 850 and Sunbeam Alpine to a Jaguar XKE and 2 Vettes (84 & 96) but the best, most fun to drive and super comfortable was my 2007 MB SL550 and my current 2015 MB SL400. The only reason I traded in the 07 for the 15 was to get a “blind spot monitor” which has proved to be a lifesaver on more than one occasion. The blend of handling, acceleration and pure luxury in a SL is hard to beat. Have to buy smart and get a low mileage used one however as the sticker prices are insane. I have found the sweet spot is 3 years old with under 50K miles and a few months left on the 4 year warranty. I bought a three year old “certified” 2007 from a MB dealer and paid top dollar, bought an extended warranty (which I never had to use) and put 20k on it with no problems.

Bought my 2015 which was also three yrs old with almost 1 year warranty left from a local reputable used car dealer with a “no hassle” pricing policy rather than a dealership and saved a ton. Thus far the 15 has had a leak in the hydraulic top that was covered by warranty but no other problems. Have driven it twice down to Miami in the last two years and was amazed at the seat comfort for a 10 hour drive. My SL’s have been the absolute best cars I have ever had the pleasure of driving this side of a Ferrari!

Oh yeah, there are a few downsides to owning a SL like when periodically replacing the windshield wipers or cabin air filter ... they are both around $200+. LOL

SLK 350 Mercedes hardtop convertible fun car to drive. Buy one three to six years old with 30,000 miles or less. This type of car usually isn’t driven that much. Good luck. Oh, there is a great Mercedes Benz club here in The Villages. Good luck finding what you want.

Just curious as in 1979 MB only made 450sl’s in USA. Did your 560sl come from Europe?

Two Bills 01-12-2020 10:53 AM

I had a Saab 2.8 V6 turbo. A real wolf in sheeps clothing. Fabulous car.
Only changed it, when both wife and I started to find it too low to get in and out of.
Now drive 3Lt.Volvo XC60 Lux. Lovely car, but nowhere near as much fun!
Nearly forgot to add. Try a Caterham. They are a whole lot of fun!

Cranford61 01-12-2020 11:33 AM

A Ferrari

3105boy 01-12-2020 12:50 PM

Audi!

Try an Audi A5 Cabriolet. Fun fun fun especially with Quattro all wheel drive. Mileage over 30mpg, large trunk and split fold down rear seats large enough for 2 adults. I put over 165,000 miles on mine in Massachusetts and then drove it to TV. Just change the oil every 10k miles.

Sail41 01-12-2020 02:20 PM

My pick would be a Mercedes slk. Especially a 6 sp manual. I've had vettes and a porche and the slk would eat them up from 80 to 100. Fast excellent handling and great looking. If more versitality is needed I second the Jeep Wrangler 2 door. Had mine 14 years and miss it every day.

normarby@aol.com 01-12-2020 02:30 PM

Try the number sports car sold in the world. The MX5 Miata. All years have fantastic handling and are very economical to buy as well as just flat out fun and affordable. The Villages has a Miata club with about 250 members and travel all over. I've owned one for 21 years.

I was gonna mention my 1972 TR6. It used to pay for our foreign car mechanic to go to Aruba every year. But I loved it.

Right now my friend bought a used fire-engine red Mercedes hard top convertible. Neat looking car and fun to ride in but not to get into or out of.

I had an early '70's MGB. Most fun car to drive, but I did need the mechanic to ride with me. That car was the reason I bought my 1st Miata. Drove like the MGB but bulletproof. I have owned 4 Miatas and still have 2, '99 10th AV and '15 Club hardtop.

I own a 2017 Mustang GT with the performance package, 435 HP, 6-speed manual and 3.70 rear.. It's not a convertible but I honestly don't care. Mustang is a great value and it is built in Dearborn, MI. I will not buy any Asian car.

Bay Kid 01-15-2020 07:11 AM

I am thinking I might want to soup up my Miatas??? '99 has 44,000 miles & the '15 has 4,200 miles w/automatic. Turbo or supercharger? Maybe one on each?

jacksonbrown 01-16-2020 08:33 AM

I've owned three Miatas (NA Spec Miata, NB with Harddog, NC) and a 1974 steel bumper MGB.

At the moment, I am Miata-less, but hunting for another NB (my favorite body style).

BTW, I drove a new RF, didn't like it, wasn't the same sporty Miata as my '99 Hard S.

jacksonbrown 01-16-2020 08:37 AM

The experts and the only turbo upgrade I would buy

Flyin' Miata Turbochargers - NB (1999-05) - Shop our catalog

If you find someone local to install it, please let me know.

Also, I'm in the market for a NB, no tupperware, stick.

PM me if you know of one, now or in the future.

Yesterday I was at Brownwood in the parking lot behind McAlister's Deli when I saw a car identical to this one. It' was orange, but looked really outstanding. I had to do a search of the entire US for find another orange for sale, this one is in Virginia for $75,000 new. For silver, black, white, blue, most of the other colors you can find in central Florida. Jaguar F-Type. You wouldn't have to buy a Turbo, it already is.

Nucky 01-16-2020 01:37 PM

Why not let the car go and think outta the box and get a Custom Crazy Off The Hook Beautiful Golf Cart! Oh Yeah! Put together a rendering of what you have in mind and find someone to build it for you. Do something nobody else would ever build. Fine Tune One of your Miatas also.

Not sure if I want to spend that kind of money? Also this might too hard on the '99 motor.

This is a pretty car. Thinking new might be the way I go. Not sure if I'm ready to let Miatas go at this time.
