Water Shut Off Handle

Need to replace the water shut handle of in the garage. Part of it broke off. Any ideas who to use. It’s a plastic t- handle, that broke. Thanks

IMHO, you will probably need a plumber to replace the entire valve, which will need to have the water turned off at the meter, not sure the plastic valves are repairable like metal ones.

Here is a website on how to replace plastic valve handles.

Replacing a PVC Ball Valve Handle - A Step By Step Guide

There are also several Youtube videos showing how to do it.

If you don't want to do it yourself, I think one of the water softener or filter companies could do it. Typically, they reroute the plastic water supply lines to install their equipment. I don't know if they will do it or how much they would charge. But, it looks pretty easy to replace the tee handle. Mine is red, and says "American Valve" on it.

RetiredGuy, a big thanks for the info, I will keep this in mind for future use. I had never seen replacement handles, made the assumption (my bad) that these were not replaceable. No I know better. VT

We had a lot of trouble turning it last time. Is there anything we can do in advance to prevent it from breaking? Maybe it’s buildup of minerals in the water?

I don't know if this is the right answer but every once in a while I would gently turn the handle on and off a few times.

What did you end up doing???

rmd2 02-17-2020 06:42 AM

I had a plumber put in a different metal handle and it is much easier to use now.

Foxmd 02-17-2020 07:12 AM

Which plumber did you use? How much was it?

Phil_Linda 02-17-2020 07:39 AM

One suggestion, if you do get a plumber to do the job ask him to put in a metal valve with long handle. This type of handle is so easy to turn. The main water valve may never be touched but if a leak happens and one needs to close it in a hurry you only hope that it isn't frozen in place. That did happen to me, fortunately I had a wrench right there that allowed me to close it. I replaced it with something that will not jam.http://https://www.supplyhouse.com/B...IaAiciEALw_wcB

Keep in mind this isn't he normal 1/2 inch white PVC used in irrigation but 3/4 inch off white CPVC fire retardant and can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes; I got the best match at Home Depot as I'm installing a whole house filter system.

Plumber that performs well.

Thanks. I’ve called them to replace the valve/handle.

Last week I replaced the crappy plastic valve with a good quality brass valve . The plastic valves are extremely difficult to shut off and I can see why the handles break .

Used Kiley & Sons and the cost was $164.78

Well worth doing, IMO

I agree, to have a plumber replace a $.50. handle they’ll probably have to pay a service call which could be 30 to $40. & I’m sure the plastic handle from the plumber will cost 5 to $10. Surely Home Depot, Lowe’s or Ace has a replacement handle. I wouldn’t think you would have to be a rocket scientist to change it.
