I think you still have to file by 4/15 but if you owe, payment is extended to 7/15?

jimbo2012 03-20-2020 09:15 AM

You can avoid paying till July and by filing an extention not file the return till then also.

Why sit down and risk exposure meeting your Cpa now when you can wait

Mleeja 03-20-2020 09:34 AM

Steve’s complete WSJ article is hidden behind a pay wall. Here is a link to the IRS website.
Payment Deadline Extended to July 15, 2020 | Internal Revenue Service
My reading of this is you must either file a return or for an extension by April 15th. Just do not think you have a three month extension to do anything.

Rapscallion St Croix 03-20-2020 09:39 AM

As of this morning, the filing deadline has also been moved to July 15

That's weird. I was able to read the whole article without paying anything, now I click on the link and like you said it a paywall. Thanks

Just heard an announcement on television tax filing deadline moved from April 15 to July 15.

Andyb 03-21-2020 05:18 AM

Government just extended the deadline till July 15th, because of the virus financial crisis.

FredJacobs 03-21-2020 06:05 AM

You don't need an extension. The tax filing deadline has been changed (this year only) from April 15th to July 15th. If you haven't had your taxes prepared by July 15th, then you can get a 6-month extension. An extension does not give you longer time to pay - your taxes must be paid by the filing deadline.

kens613 03-21-2020 06:07 AM

Been extended to July 15

Taylor32162 03-21-2020 06:17 AM

File an extension

Google ‘How to file for an extension’
Go the the irs.gov link - make sure it’s the irs link

Follow the instructions for e-filing the form. No need to download the form and mail it in.

Be aware that if you file for an extension you still have to pay an estimated tax amount by the filing deadline.

Not sure how that works now that the deadline has moved to July.

The IRS has extended the tax deadline until July 15th this year. You have lots of time to prepare your return.

Bridget Staunton 03-21-2020 06:56 AM

Yesterday they announced filing deadline has been extended to July 15 so as far as I know there may not be a need for an extension. Check to make sure

Tax Extenion

March 18, 2020

The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service are providing special payment relief to individuals and businesses in response to the COVID-19 Outbreak. The filing deadline for tax returns remains April 15, 2020. The IRS urges taxpayers who are owed a refund to file as quickly as possible. For those who can't file by the April 15, 2020 deadline, the IRS reminds individual taxpayers that everyone is eligible to request a six-month extension to file their return.

This payment relief includes:
Individuals: Income tax payment deadlines for individual returns, with a due date of April 15, 2020, are being automatically extended until July 15, 2020, for up to $1 million of their 2019 tax due. This payment relief applies to all individual returns, including self-employed individuals, and all entities other than C-Corporations, such as trusts or estates. IRS will automatically provide this relief to taxpayers. Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the IRS to qualify for this relief.

I have filed with Turbotax and I owe money. I wanted to use the extension but there is no way to prove that I did my taxes through Turbotax. So does this mean I have to file by April 15th. Thanks

Tvhusker 03-21-2020 08:07 AM

IRS tax deadline has been extended to July 15, 2020. Read this on Fox News 13 FB feed. the other day.

You said you “filed” your taxes through TurboTax.

Why would you need to prove anything if they have been filed ???

Unless you meant that you “completed” your taxes and have not yet SUBMITTED them to the IRS ???

In any event, it has been posted numerous times that you don’t need to submit (file) your taxes until the July 15 deadline extension......

It’s been posted multiple times !!! One would have to be blind or living under a rock to not be aware of it !!!!

But then again ???? 😂

newyorkmaya 03-21-2020 09:04 AM

Tax deadline now 7/15 courtesy of IRS

stits128 03-21-2020 09:15 AM

I was in the same situation, having had AARP Tax Aide do my taxes for the past few years for free. I decided to try Turbo Tax and was very happy with the process. They talk you thro everything and even e-file for you for nothing. All free, although they try to sell you an upgrade, but I found it wasn't necessary.

mikeritz53 03-21-2020 09:34 AM

New Deadline is July 15, instead of the usual April 15th.

HappyRetired 03-21-2020 09:44 AM

I agree with stits128. Why wait at all? TurboTax or go to the IRS site and file free on-line. They take you through step by step and you fill in the information that is applicable to you. You pay or get refunds through your bank account--and they show you how to do that too. Just like AARP, except you have to type it yourself.

ColdNoMore 03-21-2020 09:46 AM

I heard the filing deadline has been extended to July 15.

I'm not so sure of that. If you read the IRS notice from the link that was provided earlier in this thread, it seemed to say you still must file or file for an extension by April 15. If you owe money, you have until July 15th to pay
