Starbuck's, Spanish Springs, is closed
As of yesterday, July 18, the Starbuck's on Main St. closed. Spanish Springs Square is becoming almost a ghost town with many businesses closing. This doesn't look good, especially to visitors. Can anyone explain?
|
I can't explain but I was wondering how many stores can TV support.
With a new town square loaded with shopping around the corner, will the older squares suffer? |
I was talking to the girl Saturday and I ask her why they were closing and she said the Villages wouldn't renew there lease, that is really strange considering the whole street will be a ghost town soon. The Villages better wise up soon or they will be in trouble.

I've been hanging out with Gracie too long. I'm defending TV. My husband and I were just in Spanish Springs over the Fourth of July weekend. It isn't becoming a ghost town. It's beautiful and thriving. Businesses in TV, like every place else in America, will make it or break it based on free market rules.
You will have to copy and paste these links to see the businesses. http://www.thevillages.com/lifestyle...%20SPRINGS.pdf Here's the live cam of the square. Looks like they are settng up for the music. http://www.thevillages.com/lifestyle/sstownsquare.asp |
That is depressing to me. To me Starbuck’s was part of the puzzle, a perfect fit.
|
I would be very suspicious of the reason being TV would not
renew the lease. It is more likely the costs of doing business, i.e. the rising cost of coffee....and it is just beginning to go up. There is a point where even Starbucks fans will draw the line. In addition, there are far too many Starbucks stores in a given area. As well as the significant number of alternative sources for getting good coffee.
Remember Starbucks gets at least 15% of all the retail sales of a given store. My opinion. btk |
Heard today that Banner Mercantile is relocating to the old Augustine's (Burbon Street) location. Maybe TV is going to use the starbucks space for additions to BM/.

I have many doubts that SS will become a ghost town. There are many supporters of SS and we will be there as long as there is music in the square. :beer3: Starbucks is not a major draw to anyplace as far as I am concerned. Open a liquor bar and we will be there forever. :pepper2::pepper2: My vote is for a Hooter's to take over the old Bourbon Street and Starbucks. But only for the hot chicken wings. :MOJE_whot::MOJE_whot::MOJE_whot: |
I was telling my husband what you said zcaveman. He said his vote is for something cultural in that spot like the Canadian Ballet.
I'm not sure what he means though. I've had to drag him kicking and screaming to the ballet the handful of times he'd go with me. |

And what is up with Katie Belles?
All these "up close and personal" appearances that anyone can buy a ticket to see. Are they trying to gey away from using the Savanah center? What is the master game plan going on at the square? Inquiring minds would like to know........................have to dig out the trusty magic decoder ring. |
For Starbucks it's a business model issue. 15% of gross return to Starbucks, 10% of gross to TV on top of rent, and they can't survive on what remains. TV charges a % of gross revenue to all businesses in addition to the monthly rent. For a place that has a high traffic flow year round that works. For a place that has a seasonal business model, unless the owner builds that into their business plan, they will fail. Hence the high rate of turnover in TV leased property.

I love Spanish Springs. It's got charm. Plus, the regular line dancers are wonderful.
It might not be practical, but I would love to see more homegrown or at least regional shops and eateries and fewer national chains locate there. Big box stores and big box food are boring. Ok, I realize the guys don't find Hooter's boring. But gee, wouldn't a local restaurant with the same, um, attraction and actual food rather than industrial foodstuff be much better? |
Are you kidding!

I believe the SS Starbucks was a victim of the popularity of Paneras, down the street. Paneras is a phenomenon. It's always packed. I wouldn't want a coffee shop down the street from it.

Starbucks is a classical example of retail oversaturation, and the last I knew, they were contracting pretty quickly in a lot of areas. Lewis Black has a funny comedy routine about "a Starbucks across from a Starbucks, and that my friends, is the end of the universe".

Dunkin Donuts has real good coffee. I bet it would do good at the squares.
|
Yes DD does have good coffee, but no refills. I don't usually drink my entire cup while I'm having my donuts, but would like to top it off on the way out. No Dice at DD. At Paneras, you can keep on refilling. You could theoretically sit there all day and drink their coffee and not have to pay for but one cup. They don't have the "kool aid" though.

I have to agree with those that say SS is thriving. Don't see it as a ghost town at all.
Also as others have said Starbucks not a major draw. Yes, a DD would be good also. As far as Hooter's I am all for it, and have checked that block on the annual survey. I have to laugh though at all the misconceptions of people when you say Hooter's. Me & the wife think they have the best wings going of anyplace. And the price is right. The girl's? Yes, they are pretty, but as a general rule 99% of them are below average on the chest department, and the uniform, a tank top, shorts and sneakers with sweat socks and hose. I don't think that even comes close to be a "strip club/bar". Heck you see more driving past the pools, so I don't see it as a threat to marriages in TV! Plus, that is one thing that TV is lacking, and that is a true Sports Bar. You can say Beef O Brady's and it comes close, but doesn't have that "Pub" feel that Hooter's has. Army Guy |
