Cal’s Barber Shop

Went to Cal’s at LSL....closed. Did I miss something? I didn’t know barber shops were affected by the shutdowns.

New Englander 03-27-2020 10:19 AM

Social Distancing?

Carla B 03-27-2020 10:33 AM

I doubt the barber can cut your hair from a distance of 6'.

You missed a whole lot of things. Since my doctor's appointment with the VA last week was changed to a phone call and my wife's dentist appointment this week was cancelled until June, and her hair dresser (Victoria's) is closed, and MVP gym closed two weeks ago. I would be surprised any business that requires close customer contact is still open.

I still don’t get your point. Regardless of who owns it the shop should be closed. Barbers don’t have 6 foot length arms.

You are 100% correct, Barbers have to keep their distant, But if we follow the first post logic, sine the family own the golf courses they would be closed also, but wait they are open!

Comparing apples and bananas. Barbershops are enclosed spaces. Golf courses are outdoor spaces. Enough with bashing.

Ran into one of Cal's LSL barbers Tuesday afternoon. He said that new hours of 9-1 were starting. That didn't last long.

You're kidding, right?

Barbers are literally in your face (in a nice way) and they serve maybe 10-20 customers per day. Even if you don't get the bug from the barber, he/she is almost guaranteed to catch if after a week or two given the numbers of people they've been up close to.

In other states like PA, OH, NY etc that have closed bars, restaurants, etc, they specifically call out barbershops and salons to shut down.

In FL the governor did not include salons and barbers ordered to be closed. Hence the owners of these shops are left with the decision of "closing on their own". As a result potentially excluded from any assistance forthcoming.....because they were not ordered to close and closed on their own.

It is a real problem for these shop owners......and oh by the way....just not right. The governor has done a dis-service to these small business owners. How could he not order shutting down of hands on types of businesses.

'Bout time. I was surprised they were opened as long as they were. I'm sure they didn't fully (or partially for that matter) disinfect each chair between customers and the barbers didn't wear gloves or masks and peoples hair was on the floor blowing all over the place. I'm desperate for a haircut but I'd have had to be stupid to sit down in one of those shops over the last few weeks. Going to have to try a DIY.

Me too ... ie DIY.

Maybe get a bowl, scissors and sit out on the lanai to try to let my wife take a whack at it. It's the new corona cut.

Lots of good DITY (Do It To Yourself) videos on YouTube! I just ordered a "professional" cutter thingie with 87 different guide attachments! Fortunately I wear a hat most of the time. :1rotfl:

John_W 03-27-2020 10:05 PM

This is the trimmer I've been using for about ten years now. It's lightweight, so it's easy to hold steady. It's rechargeable, so there is no batteries or wire in the way. It has the hair guards built in and they adjust with just your thumb and it was only about $30 new.

Byte1 03-28-2020 05:29 AM

Even if the barber shop was open, I doubt I would ever be desperate enough to take the chance for a while; until this is over. Some mentioned the chairs, but you have to remember the "batman" cape they use to protect your clothes from the cut hair, and the clippers, comb and scissors that they use on everyone that they service. Of course, they could sanitize their tools every time they worked on a new customer, but how good does some spray actually work? Since we are supposed to keep our distance from others and stay at home as much as possible, I don't think a bit of long hair is going to matter much. I am really surprised that there is any question as to why a barber shop would close down during a pandemic. I am not even one that gets hysterical over this stuff, but I am a bit pragmatic and think that caution is prudent.

tsmall22204 03-28-2020 05:35 AM

Ready! Think about it.

By the time the barber shops reopen, The Villages will be overrun by Long-haired Hippy Freaks reminiscing about the Summer of Love and their favorite Grateful Dead concerts! (Laughing)

rockandroller 03-28-2020 07:08 AM

"Long-haired Hippy Freaks"

I resent that. No, I appreciate that. :a040:

Satjr35031 03-28-2020 07:08 AM

They called me to let me know they were closing and my scheduled haircut first week of April was cancelled I appreciate them for letting me know

rrlavigne 03-28-2020 07:09 AM

The issue I see with golf courses isn't while playing, it's the large crowds at the starter shacks.

bouwie2 03-28-2020 07:16 AM

10 or more people, not allowed

Yukon9 03-28-2020 07:37 AM

We are all doomed! Can you get a haircut from someone who stands six feet away from you??

The Way We Were

Edit out - Never mind, I was commenting on a terrific, v. cool 70s picture but now it is not there anymore.

Rosebud1949 03-28-2020 09:23 AM

Cals sent an email to their customers on Thursday..... BUT it was from their Spanish Springs and Brownwood shops I did NOT get one from LSL.. which is my usual location... but I understand why they did it.. too close contacts with clients.....

ellenwelsh 03-28-2020 09:35 AM

We need for this to be over. My fingernails are becoming like daggers. I can’t clip them myself because I have this really, really hard polish on them.

yankygrl 03-28-2020 09:41 AM

Barbershops and nail salon closures

The governor ask all non essential businesses to close - while I don't necessarily agree that they are nonessential, most people feel they are. Hence they closed. And everyone is correct they can't keep the six ft distance from client.

JudyLife 03-28-2020 09:41 AM

It is not an essential, same as beauty salons, spas.

You're just being facetious about barber's and hair salons/spas should actually be considered "essential"...right?

My wife considers the hair salon and nail salon to ESSENTIAL.

However, she's also applying good judgement by staying away until the crisis is over.

BRK1939 03-28-2020 10:14 AM

Love it -- "The Corona Cut". Remember those photos from China of years ago when all the males pictured had the same hair cut ? Here we go. My wife is so desperate she was even willing to let me cut her locks -- like I would EVER want to live with the aftermath of that action !

I'm actually enjoying my VA phone appointments. It sure beats having to drive to the clinic 35 minutes each way. (I am very good at not leaving my house for days.)

I read that even animal hospitals were having difficulty being classified as Essential Businesses. So hair/nail salons? Totally non-essential. It's temporary, folks. No need to be so high maintenance. Throw your hair in a ponytail and go on with your day.
And stay the fluff home!

.........as I read somwhere.
And in about 3-4 weeks, we will all know your true hair color!

Get a razor comb. Cut it yourself.
