Removing Popcorn Ceiling?
 

My husband and I have been looking at several pre-owned houses, some of which have the popcorn ceiling. My husband hates the look of this type of ceiling, so I'm wondering if anyone knows who would provide a service to scrap off this stuff and put on a knock-down finish. Any idea what this type of service would cost? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I can't be of too much help, but a home in our neighborhood had a truck in front of it for two days. On the side it said something like "popcorn ceiling removed." I'd ask the people, but I don't remember which house.

There are a couple of posts on the removal of popcorn ceilings from last year I think. Do a search and see if you can find anything.

My only recollection is that it is a very messy job to remove the popcorn ceiling and that it you decide to do it then try and schedule it before you move any furniture or anything into the house.

i'd guess the cost will depend on what is under the popcorn finish and how much ceiling there is to refinish. check the listing pf professional services in the back of the daily sun and contact a painter or handyman to ask about the project.

the decorating/remodeling shows on tv have often shown the owners spraying the ceilings with water and then scraping the popcorn finish off with a putty knife - never tried it myself.

I found that to hire it done is a very expensive job because of the labor involved. The easiest and quickest way, and maybe even less expensive, is to special order 1/4 or 3/8 sheetrock and put it up over the old ceiling. The mudding of the joints don't have to be sanded if you are going to do a knock-down texture. This is the route I chose when I remodeled a couple of years ago. Much less mess and much quicker.

My husband covered our popcorn ceiling with a wood plank ceiling. We hate popcorn (ceilings, not the buttered variety), but we left them in the bedrooms.

Just another idea . . .

We just had this done and surprise, the men who did this didn't make a mess. We are very pleased with the outcome...........

I just kinda thought you two lived south of 466. I didn't think there were any popcorn ceilings south of 466.

Interesting post because we just had our property manager have workers remove the popcorn ceiling and refinish the ceiling in an 1850 sq ft rental we have in California.

Total cost: $1,850.00. That's Orange County California prices, I imagine you could get it done for less in Florida.

gg - We've got them.....in Duval. We aren't fond of them, but that's what came with the house.

We live in Poinciana.........and many new homes have popcorn...we saw some homes in Pennecamp with popcorn.........

Import the workers from California........it was cheaper there. But again I must say, they were meticulous and of course the ceilings were refinished. We have a Junitper approx 2000 sq.ft.

I was told some people in our condo complex in CT have popcorn ceilings to hide the blemishes and unven parts.

I personally don't like it. The drywall guy says he hates working on it when a repair needs to be done as it is difficult to get the ceiling looking right again.

LOL..I meant it to be funny..........my husband hated it and so it went.......I for one never look up.....

we also have popcorn ceilings in a designer home with upgrades, I just thank God I have a home in TV, I am not a person who is hard to please......

Maybe...I don't know what popcorn ceilings are. Ours are kinda flat sculptured like. They aren't PLAIN...with no bumps. Are popcorn the kind that kinda looks like little globs of cottage cheese?

It's funny. It really doesn't matter much either way, except someone (AND we will never know who that someone is)...says they are in.........or out.

We thought pop corn ceiling went out with green appliances until we moved to TV. We asked the builder to replace the ceiling with a knock down before we moved in but he didn't want to do it and so said it would cost us $5,000. We had so much to do when we first moved in so we waited until we decided on repainting the interior. I was given a name of a guy (can't remember his name and lost his number). He completed the project in less than two days without me moving that much furniture. Basically he needed only to get within 2 feet of any wall. so I broken down the beds, moved some furniture around covered it. He replaced it with a knock down at a total cost of $1500 . We own a Latana

We removed the popcorn ceiling from one of our previous homes by using a spray bottle and hot water. Spray and let sit for a few minutes take a painting spatula and scrape away. Easy but messy, hope never to see it again!

I need a popcorn ceiling remover desperately! Who did yours? Please tell me. Were they reasonable?

This is an old thread, but your question is current. We take a large sprayer used for outside plant feeding, fill with hot water, and a cup of fabric softener. Spray and allow it to sit. Scrape with a tool used to mud drywall. It's messy, but not hard. It's very costly to have it removed. In houses built prior to the 1970's there may be asbestos. I'm not sure if your house fits into that age group, but you may want to get it tested. We use masks even with the new popcorn ceilings.

I bought my house 9 years ago and it has popcorn ceilings. It certainly doesn't bother me and I wonder why people seem to be so concerned with removing the popcorn ceilings?
