How do I dispose of cooking oil?

I have an unopened 2 qt. bottle of vegetable cooking oil that expired in 2018. How should I dispose of it. I hate to just drop the bottle in the trash.

anothersteve 04-24-2020 05:23 PM

It's still good. get frying!

The vegetable oil itself is bio-degradable. It is the darn bottle that will last forever. Just do not pour down the drain!

davem4616 04-24-2020 05:53 PM

put it in the trash on Monday or Thursday

sounds like you lost track of your inventory....you need to go fix that so you don't continue to waste money

Not helpful. Just put it in the trash, bottle and all. After years of recycling, it looks like everything will end up in the trash (garbage) anyway.

cheribaby 04-25-2020 04:45 AM

I pour it in a plastic bag that is already in the trash or recycle bin. I take some used napkins and put in which soaks up the oil, Kudos to you for caring!

Maxsan 04-25-2020 04:51 AM

Many restaurants will allow you to put it in their oil recycling container. Used is typically recycled for fuel or in such things as dog food.
Even an auto store may take it and put in their used motor oil recycling.

Give it to a truck driver - vegetable oil works fine in Diesel engines

No it’s not. It gets rancid.

Don’t Pour Oil Down the Drain. Pouring oil down the drain or toilet causes clogs in your home plumbing system and contributes to larger clogs in the municipal lines that can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

Oil and grease may be liquid when hot but will cool in your pipes, congealing and gathering other oil particles in the pipes. As the grease collection grows, it will prevent water from flowing through and causing it to back up into your kitchen and bathroom.

The right way to dispose of grease is simple; throw it in your trash can. Follow these steps to avoid pouring hot grease directly in your garbage:

1) Let the oil or grease cool and solidify.
2) Once cool and solid, scrape the grease into a container that can be thrown away.
3) When your container is full, place it in a plastic bag to prevent leakage and then throw it in the garbage.
4) Once you’re rid of the majority of the grease, use a paper towel to wipe down all pots, pans and dishes that came into contact with the oil before rinsing them in the sink. Even small amounts of leftover grease are dangerous to your plumbing because it will build up over time.

woderfulwendy1 04-25-2020 06:10 AM

What a waste to dump it. It's perfectly good. If it smells off (some people say it smells like crayons!), It is most likely a sell buy date. Do what your mom did before the bs of dates on everything
Smell it. It's only 2020.

The information you referenced in “Sumpter”, its Sumter, are locations in South Carolina. A little far to drop off used oils. :)

No it is not still good it will be very rancid. Soybean oil starts tasting rancid after 6 months especially in an opened clear bottle. Light and air are not good for oil.

On canned foods The Best Buy date is exactly that, the flavor will start to deteriorate but as long as the can is intact it is good to eat.

bumpygreens 04-25-2020 07:57 AM

Oil starts off rancid and gray in color. It's chemically treated to give it a more pleasing color and odor. I had a new disposal installed a few months ago, and the plumber told me to pour vegetable oil in the drain if I was going to be away from home for any length of time. Oil doesn't congeal in your pipes like grease, it lubricates the disposal and it forms a barrier in the trap that won't evaporate keeping sewer odor and insects from coming up through your drain.

If unopened it is likely just fine. Use it, or if you don’t want to, donate it to a food bank. I frequently volunteer at Atlanta Community food bank , and things like expired canned goods and cooking oil are perfectly fine as long as they are originally sealed and in good condition. Read about sell-by dates, these are not absolute and are used for stock rotation and control. Local food banks: Find Food Now

excellent advice to follow folks...it will clog up your plumbing if you put it down the drain

I keep an empty crushed tomato can in the freezer....any oil left over after cooking goes in there...when it's 3/4 full it goes out in the regular trash inside a plastic freezer bag

Absolutely correct! The only food expiration dates that are valid are for baby formula.

You cannot donate out-of-date items to food banks. They may not use it and will have to dispose of it.

Secondarily, old boxes of cake mix have shortening and they go bad. I've tried on several occasions to use an old mix and the resulting product is inedible. It may smell "off" when you open the mix, but even if it doesn't, when it's mixed with the liquids it takes on a rancid flavor.

merrymini 04-25-2020 09:01 AM

Smell test!

Byte1 04-25-2020 09:23 AM

Cooking oil can be used in oil lamps, if you are really concerned about what to do with it. If your power goes off and you want a light, you can use oil lamps for many hours. A bottle of vegetable oil will burn for a long time. I understand that olive oil is better than most vegetable oils for burning. I haven't tried it, but it's an idea rather than wasting it by throwing it away.

Hogfan55 04-25-2020 09:38 AM

It’s unusable

I’ve spent 46 years in the wholesale restaurant supply business and I can tell you for sure if it is 2 years out of date it will smell and taste rancid. Will it hurt you? Probably not. But anything you add it to or cook in it will end up in the trash. Don’t ruin whatever you’re cooking. Dump it.

Linda Taranto 04-25-2020 09:53 AM

I like the add to soil response; I never heard that and it makes good sense to me.
Thanks

Tadpole 04-25-2020 11:51 AM

I googled it awhile back coz I had cooking oil dating back 12 years!!! Sorry I didn't keep the source, but was told do NOT pour it down the drain or toilet. Do NOT put it in a recycle bag. Keep it in the plastic jar, sealed, and put it in your garbage bag along with the rest of whatever is in there. They will pick it up and get rid of it. Another option is to pour small amounts in a messy yard where there are no pretty plants or grass. That didn't appeal to me.

DeafDeaf 04-25-2020 12:20 PM

Vegetable Oil expired???

Their shelf life, however, is quite similar to one another. As long as your vegetable oil is unopened and stored properly, it should be fine for at least two years, probably for a lot longer. Once you'll open the bottle, the oil in it should be fine for at least a year. Olive oil will last another one year!

If you have a shredder then you can use the shredded paper to soak up all the oil. Then put it in the trash.

Villagevip 04-25-2020 04:45 PM

Dig hole in your sandy soil, that grows nothing but weeds....Pour in the oil and cover with the soil.. See what happens, you either get a nest of roaches or flowers..

karostay 04-25-2020 05:10 PM

Great lubricant for garbage disposal
If you leave for an extended period pour some down each drain won't evaporate and will keep bugs from coming in through drain pipes

bpascani 04-25-2020 07:10 PM

I appreciate your concern about disposing of this properly.. This has happened to us SO MANY TIMES! with regard to our oil, I would just put it somewhere in my yard that I don't want anything to grow, then 'water it down'. Then, rinse the bottle well, with hot water before before recycling the bottle. Thank you for caring! I appreciate you!
